Reminder: Obama promised war in Afghanistan

Posted: Aug 23, 2017

On Monday, President Donald Trump laid out his strategy for the war in Afghanistan going into 2018 and beyond. While reaction to the strategy was somewhat mixed, there was one thing that stuck out: Wait, didn't former President Barack Obama say that we'd be done with this by now? Why yes, yes he did. Let's take a trip in the way-back machine and look at some now-regrettable tweets, dug up by Fox's Stephen Miller: FACT: Unlike President Obama, Romney has no plan to end the war in Afghanistan and bring our troops home.— Barack Obama (@BarackObama) October 9, 2012 As it turns out, neither did President Obama. President Obama: "I told you we’d end the war in Iraq. We did. I said we’d end the war in Afghanistan. We are." #PromiseKept— Barack Obama (@BarackObama) October 24, 2012 The year 2014 came and went and the war is still happening. The United States invaded Afghanistan on October 7, 2001. To put this into more tangible units, at the time the invasion began, I was in the fifth grade. I have now been out of college with a bachelor's degree longer than I was in college, and I graduated on time without skipping any grades. More horrifyingly, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) made the observation that people who weren't yet born when the invasion began will be sent to go fight in Afghanistan in just over a year. I had hoped the Afghanistan war would end soon, but now it's inevitable that babies born during the war will be deploying to the war in 2019— Thomas Massie (@RepThomasMassie) August 22, 2017 This war can't go on forever, and hopefully Trump is able to one day end it, responsibly. Narrator: we did not. FACT: President Obama has a plan to end the war in Afghanistan in 2014—Mitt Romney does not.— Barack Obama (@BarackObama) October 22, 2012 It is August 22, 2017, and the war is still going on. President Obama: “We’re ending the war in Afghanistan because after a decade of war, it’s time to do some nation-building here at home.”— Barack Obama (@BarackObama) October 23, 2012 The war did not end. "Because of the sacrifice of our brave men and women in uniform, the war in Iraq is over. The war in Afghanistan is coming to a close."— Barack Obama (@BarackObama) November 4, 2012 ;

Yes, his strategy...the quickest way to end a war is - to lose it. If you like your armistice

you can keep your armistice!

I believe Gitmo is still there too. - NM

What exactly do you think Trump will do - to end this? Don't you

[ In Reply To ..]
think Obama had good intentions when he thought he could end it. I'm sure Trump believes he can but I highly doubt it. Those people in that and other countries like them have been fighting for many, many years and I don't believe any president will stop the war going on over there, whether we pull out or whether we send a million troops.

Afghanistan And Horse Comment By Obama Last NightOct 23, 2012
Here's a story and link of the following: Although the glory days of the United States Cavalry are long gone, horses still serve the military. At Smith Lake Stables, adjacent to Fort Bragg, N.C., 36 horses are owned by the U.S. government and serve their country in two assignments. In one assignment, they act as equine ambassadors, linking the civilian public to the military. The horses are used in an annual summer camp program and in weekly day camp activities for home-schooled kids. But ...

A Reminder On Foreign Policy And Obama.Oct 23, 2012
Remember 2008? One of Obama's weak points was foreign policy....he had NO experience in foreign policy. A lot of people don't want to vote for Romney because he doesn't have any foreign policy experience. To those people, I would love to know why they would vote for a candidate that had no foreign policy experience one year and four years later refuse to vote for someone because they don't have any foreign policy experience? Doesn't make sense to me. This post really d ...

Thoughts on our plans for Afghanistan anyone? I'm never pro-war, but a sudden pullout could be very dangerous for us as well as the Afghan people. I would very much like to see American aid based on "performance". Karzai may have been elected, but he's corrupt and inept.  Hawks are uncomfortable with a timetable being announced. I like it, myself. It gives the Afghan government an incentive to get their poo together, get people trained. It puts the cards on the table for everyon ...

She's been reporting on Afghan since 1996. She certainly knows the region and explains the Taliban and al Qaeda. Not a long read; worth reading. ========================== (CNN) -- October has been the deadliest month for the US and NATO militaries fighting in Afghanistan as well as UN workers trying to organize an election runoff. Surely the surge in deaths serves to underscore why Afghanistan matters. For all the debate happening away from the battlefield, here are a couple of importan ...

This is for those who like and understand Keith Olbermann. It's about our occupation and war against Afghanistan. There's very little, if anything, that I disagree with him about. I hope those who do not care for Olbermann will at least listen to the comment and then give their opinions so we can have a real debate on this thread and not just drive-by one-liners like "I hate Olbermann" or "I hate MSNBC" or other comments along those lines. U.S. Identifies Vast Riches Of Minerals In AfghanistanJun 14, 2010

The previously unknown deposits — including huge veins of iron, copper, cobalt, gold and critical industrial metals like lithiu ...
