Why are we still in Afghanistan?

Posted: Oct 17, 2009

And contemplating sending more troops?

There's no boogieman there
There's no false imminent threat
There's no made up connection to 9/11.
There's no fake yellow cake

Good point! Obama says because bin Laden is there..... - watcher

although everyone else thinks he is in the tribal lands in Pakistan. I think we are in Afghanistan for the same reason we are in Iraq...because terrorists took out 3000 innocent people. That is what spurred ALL of it. Whether they are directly related is a moot point now because we ARE in 2 wars, whether it was bad intelligence or WHATEVER...9-11 attacks the catalyst that spawned both wars. Had we not been attacked, we would not be in a war anywhere. At this point bin Laden is an afterthought; we have found out much later he was not the 9-11 mastermind anyway, supposedly now it is Khalid Sheikh Mohammed....who confessed...who we DO have in custody and yep...we picked him up in Pakistan.

So why are we still in Afghanistan?

Same reason we are in still in Iraq. Went for the same basic reason, still both places for the same basic reason. We were attacked.

Unless of course the left thinks Obama is after the oil too. Well, I guess when HE is after the oil it would be OK tho. Just like the war is OK and they understand NOW the need not to pull out...yada yada.

;)

Do you personally KNOW where Bin Laden is? I doubt it. Our president is not quickly making rash decisions to go to war. Give him credit for that, okay? You hate Obama. That is your right; however, I doubt you could do better than he has to this point given the mess he inherited. You are an MT. That is a difficult job, but NOTHING compared to being the President of the United States. You post so many posts about rumor, but tell me what YOU would do in Obama's place other than post rumors and have diarrhea of the mouth? I don't mean to be disrespectful, just calling a spade a spade.

Blah, blah, tell it to someone who cares...when will the mess be his??? Hmm - nm

HE is the one who said he was in Afghanistan, not me. HE also said he believes we belong in Afghanistan so he did not "inherit" it.

I do NOT hate Obama. Hate is a wasted, useless emotion. You might think about that in your hatred of anyone who opposes your sainted hero. Yes, being President of the US is a tough job. Did you cut Bush as much as slack as you are cutting your hero? Gee, I really doubt that.

None of my posts are about rumor. Most of his czars have been active on the fringe of politics for years, many of them on the socialist/Marxist side. For YEARS. All you would have to do, if you were so inclined which you obviously are NOT, is do independent unbiased research. The key word here being unbiased. Look it up.

You don't mean to be disrespectful?? LOL. Right after "diarrhea of the mouth?" Perhaps while you are in the dictionary you should look up disrespectful as well.

As to where bin Laden is...perhaps your sainted Barack should not say bin Laden is in Afghanistan as a reason for being there if he is not sure? If he WAS sure, he would have gotten him...which he claimed he would do if elected. You are probably right...no one knows WHERE he is, including Obama, but that is the reason he gave for us being there. Talk to HIM if you have an issue with that.

Also...I would avoid "calling a spade a spade." Could be viewed as racist. I would think you would be sensitive to that...but...that would assume you have any sensitivity.....diarrhea of the mouth not withstanding.

This is becoming Obama's mess now.. and he is only - making things worse and worse...and worse.nm

supposedly there. But...intelligence sources say he is in the tribal areas of Pakistan, where they picked up Khalid Sheikh Mohammed...which makes sense. So...your question remains...why are we still in Afghanistan?

And it is a very GOOD question.

You don't think it could be possible - lm

that the president has some intelligence information that you don't do you?
Perhaps he is...but if he knows where he is, you would think.... - watcher

with all the pressing issues at home, and trying to pass health care, he would send in the CIA or Seals or SOMEBODY and kill him already, bring the troops home and BE DONE WITH IT.

He has no clue where he is; he just needed something plausible to say as to why he is keeping troops in Afghanistan. Maybe bin Laden has moved to Iraq and that is why we are still there?

The OP asked a good question. Why, if indeed he knows bin Laden IS in Afghanistan, have we not gone and gotten him and stopped both these wars?
With all the problems he is currently having, you would think he would jump right on that one.

Ergo...he has not a clue where bin Laden is, and he knows he can't just pull out of Afghanistan, just like he can't out of Iraq, but he has to say something to keep the hard left off him...they are already nipping at his heels.

Thoughts on our plans for Afghanistan anyone? I'm never pro-war, but a sudden pullout could be very dangerous for us as well as the Afghan people. I would very much like to see American aid based on "performance". Karzai may have been elected, but he's corrupt and inept.  Hawks are uncomfortable with a timetable being announced. I like it, myself. It gives the Afghan government an incentive to get their poo together, get people trained. It puts the cards on the table for everyon ...

Amanpour's View On AfghanistanOct 30, 2009
She's been reporting on Afghan since 1996. She certainly knows the region and explains the Taliban and al Qaeda. Not a long read; worth reading. ========================== (CNN) -- October has been the deadliest month for the US and NATO militaries fighting in Afghanistan as well as UN workers trying to organize an election runoff. Surely the surge in deaths serves to underscore why Afghanistan matters. For all the debate happening away from the battlefield, here are a couple of importan ...

The Great One Speaks On AfghanistanNov 21, 2013
On November 20 (yesterday) George W. Bush (AKA "The Great One") was on Jay Leno. Here what he said about DRAWING DOWN IN AFGHANISTAN: “I don’t know how big the footprint needs to be, but I do know that if we leave too early, women and young girls will suffer a lot,” Bush said of U.S. troops’ exit from the country. I just do not understand why the Republicans are not happy. ...

Reminder: Obama Promised War In AfghanistanAug 23, 2017
On Monday, President Donald Trump laid out his strategy for the war in Afghanistan going into 2018 and beyond. While reaction to the strategy was somewhat mixed, there was one thing that stuck out: Wait, didn't former President Barack Obama say that we'd be done with this by now? Why yes, yes he did. Let's take a trip in the way-back machine and look at some now-regrettable tweets, dug up by Fox's Stephen Miller: FACT: Unlike President Obama, Romney has no plan to ...

Keith Olbermann Special Comment - AfghanistanDec 01, 2009
This is for those who like and understand Keith Olbermann. It's about our occupation and war against Afghanistan. There's very little, if anything, that I disagree with him about. I hope those who do not care for Olbermann will at least listen to the comment and then give their opinions so we can have a real debate on this thread and not just drive-by one-liners like "I hate Olbermann" or "I hate MSNBC" or other comments along those lines. This is an OPINION piece by Keith Olberm ...

U.S. Identifies Vast Riches Of Minerals In AfghanistanJun 14, 2010
Think of the potential! Amazing! The war, the terrorists--all of it. WASHINGTON — The United States has discovered nearly $1 trillion in untapped mineral deposits in Afghanistan, far beyond any previously known reserves and enough to fundamentally alter the Afghan economy and perhaps the Afghan war itself, according to senior American government officials. The previously unknown deposits — including huge veins of iron, copper, cobalt, gold and critical industrial metals like lithiu ...

Afghanistan And Horse Comment By Obama Last NightOct 23, 2012
Here's a story and link of the following: Although the glory days of the United States Cavalry are long gone, horses still serve the military. At Smith Lake Stables, adjacent to Fort Bragg, N.C., 36 horses are owned by the U.S. government and serve their country in two assignments. In one assignment, they act as equine ambassadors, linking the civilian public to the military. The horses are used in an annual summer camp program and in weekly day camp activities for home-schooled kids. But ...
