Vegtable garden in the front yard?

Posted: May 22, 2012

I am of the school that you plant flowers and shrubs and bushes in the front yard for good curb appeal.  You make your house look very appealing and pretty, but we have newer neighbors next to us that have decided to plant a vegtable garden out front.  They are growing carrots and onions and such in front of the house, while the rest of the block looks pretty, my mid summer, this yard next to ours is going to look like a weedy jungle.  They bought a townhouse, not a farm house.  I am just waiting for the chicken coupe to be built out back, but that will probably come after he builds the 'outdoor shower' he is planning on putting in this summer amongst the vegtable garden they have in the backyard that is already looking very overgrown and poles and strings everywhere.  Just wondering if anyone else out there has seen vegtable gardens in the front yard.

Vegetable gardens in the front yard can be lovely! - Holly

A well-maintained vegetable garden is usually a lovely sight to see. There are books on how to landscape with edible plants. One book is in my bookcase downstairs. I used to have a small plot in a carefully tended community garden in the Crown Point area of San Diego, less than a mile from the ocean, two blocks from Mission Bay, right next to the sidewalk and immediately across the street from condos that most people can't afford to buy. The community garden added to the atmosphere of the neighborhood. It didn't devalue property values one bit. If your neighbors don't keep their yard tidy, that's an entirely different problem. But plants don't morph into instantly ugly simply because they're edible.

As long as it's maintained and they do their weeding, I see nothing wrong with it. I also live in a townhouse with very little soil to till. I do a lot of container gardening; herbs, tomatoes, etc., it's wonderful to be able to walk out the door and cut some fresh herbs for a salad. It's a bit unconventional to have a vegetable garden in the front yard but there's nothing wrong with it, IMO. Anyone who is a serious gardener generally finds a way to make it happen. Be nice to them so they'll share the harvest, with you, lol!

They were avid gardeners and had their front yard done in very nice laid out beds. It was very pretty, actually. The back was done up just as nicely and they had a family of turtles living there.

I used to garden but only in my fenced backyard. I learned not to plant anything unprotected years ago when my prized tomatoes were stolen from my yard (lived in a trailer park then). There are some people who live down the block from me who garden a lot in the front yard, but again they have a fence and plant the better stuff inside, but it does not look bad, they spend a lot of time keeping it up. Guess it just depends on how much work they put into taking care of it.

some people are just tacky - and inconsiderate of others

I am a self proclaimed "yard nazi." I love a nicely manicured lawn and shrubs, and my neighbors appreciate it. We like to keep our home values up and I would be totally upset. I just think if you say anything to them, they will get worse, cause that is how those kind are.

Wow, watch out for those kind of people.SM - Me

Would you just listen to yourself, equating people who want to have a different kind of front yard (with a vegetable garden)as lower class and beneath you. Did it every occur to you that they might need to grown some of their own food. In any event they'll probaby eat better than you this summer.

They do not need to grow it and when they moved in last year - OP

they said they rarely even eat any vegtables. Their backyard is already looking rather overgrown and there are wooden posts and strings everywhere. I have a garden that is fenced in, in my backyard. I have an herb planter on my deck. I do not begrude anyone growing vegtables, but carrot and onions, etc in the front yard is going to look like a bunch of weeds all over the place. They have netting in the front yard over strawberry plants that one of the older gentlemen that lives up the street has had to free birds from so they did not die. There are people on the street who have dug up the whole front yard and put all plants in and they are referred to on the street as the "jungle yards" and they look pretty bad. I just don't want to live right next to another jungle yard. I grew up with a tremendous garden when I was a kid, but we lived in a house that had an acre back yard and the front yard had flowers, roses and bushes. I love my fresh veggies from my backyard, but I am realistic, I live in a townhouse and do not expect to have corn, watermelons and an entire produce department growing in a stamp sized yard.
Still, what right do you have to tell others what to do - with their own yards? Thats wrong.

I have a garden as well, in the back yard, so I think I will eat just fine thank you very much.

Dont call me out on my bad statement if you have to throw one in yourself. Makes you looks as bad as me!

"those kind" (!) - sm

And what, exactly, constitutes "those kind"? Are you talking about those who are into sustainable living, feeding their family, and optimizing land use?

Just because your attitudes about yards differ from those of your neighbors does not mean they are of a certain "kind". It sounds like their front yard has optimal sun for a vegetable garden. If the exposure in the back yard (if they have one) were better, I daresay they would have planted their garden there.

I think it's more relevant to wonder why people in arid parts of the country insist upon having a lawn - when grass is not native to the area and water is scarce.

We once owned a townhome and we had this mondo thick 3-ring binder full of rules and regs of what could and couldn't be done to and around one's townhome. Mostly the emphasis was on what could not be done. The condo board could even impose fines. We couldn't even put up an American flag anywhere on our units, which really rubbed some residents, but even that was spelled out in the condo docs, like it or not.

Is there something like this in place where you are? ...or a condo association you can present your concerns to?

I've even seen veggie gardens as part of the professionally - planted garden in front of a bank downtown.

I've been looking at the water-wasting lawn in the front yard, and thinking of plowing it under and putting in raised vegetable beds. Lots of suburban people already have chicken coops. Some are really cute! The people across the street have chickens (no crowing roosters, though), and I like them!

I think it is a trend towards sustainable living - Goat herder

I think people are understanding that there is a lot of energy waste in commercial food production, from fuel, pesticides, shipping, etc. and the food just is not a good of quality. The recent recession made a lot of people more conscious of the economics of food as well.

In our city of almost 100,000, it is totally legal to have 4 chickens for egg layers (no roosters allowed). It is a very progressive, green city, where farmer's markets do well. There are zoning, permits, etc.

I personally find the perfectly manicured, sheared, sprayed and sprinkled lawn quite boring. More power to 'em.
