GOP Senate Candidate Todd Akin thinks victims of "legitimate" rape

....I suppose as opposed to women who are raped "illegitimately," whose bodies cannot prevent conception. He explained his impressive knowledge of human reproduction by saying, “the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

Like his democratic challenger, incumbent Senator Claire McCaskill D-MO, I am truly stunned at this amazing turn of events. This guy actually thinks we should pay him to legislate our laws. It will be interesting to see how Missouri polls on this race look this time next week. Oh, by the way, Akin partnered with Ryan to co-sponsor a bill last year that would to redefine rape, in an effort to restrict funding for rape victims unless it was....(wait for it)....."forcible" rape, as opposed to rape that's NOT forced? Huh?

Claire McCaskill is such a great candidate. If she loses to him, perhaps all is lost after all....all critical-thinking skills, that is.

I was a "tween" and did not understand the whole thing. A "friend" told me that you can't get pregnant because "it closes up" if a woman fights back. My sister definitely fought back. I remember the bruises around her neck. She got pregnant.

Apparently this guy is about as intelligent as a 12-year-old.

and a virgin. The standard wisdom for teens back then was virgins don't get pregnant. Perhaps Akin and Ryan concur. I was drugged, rendered semiconscious, and was able to fight back about as forcibly as a blind, deaf newborn kitten. My mistake, I guess. I never could get the sense my pregnancy was some miraculous, biology-defying, immaculate conception but, hey, I did get my wake-up call.

Abortion was not yet legal, so there was no alternative but to go into hiding and carry to term, since social pressures of the day only allowed for shame and blame to be heaped upon the victim and their mortified families. I was a high school senior who missed prom and walked the stage nearly 5 months gone, under the glare of female student counselors on stage who were "onto me." Instead of shopping for prom dresses, I settled for wearing the same black wool skirt (the only one that still fit my waist) and loose tops, in suffocating Gulf Coast heat and humidity, everyday while sitting in un-airconditioned classrooms, during the final weeks before commencement. That get-up never could hide my expanding belly bump.

The counselors failed in their efforts to get me to "own up" to my fall from grace, and had been unable to expel me in accordance with prevailing school policy. Their hatred was palpable at the graduation ceremonies. To their dismay, with diploma in hand, I disrobed right in front of them, flashed my first pastel lime green "hatching jacket" attire, and waved my sheepskin at them, before descending the stage. I'm sure my family was horrified, though we never did discuss my bawdy display of defiance.

A few short days later, I was wisked off under the cloak of darkness AT MIDNIGHT, to a Catholic Charities unwed mother's home where I encountered a panel of counselors in charge of the inevitable "voluntary" adoption, that consisted of 2 nuns and an obnoxious, morally superior psychological counselor, a disapproving Victorian old biddy, whose face I will NEVER forget. These women demeaned me and my "condition" for the duration of the pregnancy during our "sessions", until the day of delivery, which was 3 weeks late.

Before signing away all parental rights forever, I was told how fortunate I was to have "real" and loving parents waiting in the wings, willing to help clean up the mess I had made of my life, by snatching my first-born from the nursery before I was released from the hospital. I had not been not allowed to see him when he was born, or to hold him before he disappeared from my life.

I held this ordeal against my mom, who never did believe my "drugged virgin story," and who years later I came to understand was following social protocols in doing what she had been taught "was in the best interest of all parties." It ruined my life for the next decade, since I made the unconcious decision to go out there and live up to the "bad girl" persona the entire episode had imposed on me.

I became promiscuous and drank and drugged my way through college and a couple of failed marriages, one of which was verbally and physically abusive. What really helped me come to terms with it all was the feminist movement, the ultimate legalization of abortion and the political activities I have engaged in ever since, behind women's reproductive rights.

One of the expressed intents behind the Akin-Ryan redefinition of rape is to spare abusive husbands (who would force their spouses into performing their wifely duties) the agonies of a "messy divorce" and to prevent witchy women from wielding their powerful V-jay-jay weaponry. For me, it's stories like this that resurrect all the horrors of these experiences I have spent literally decades trying to put behind me. To know there are pols out there who would redefine justice for women on so many different levels, while protecting their rapists, forcing pregnancies and births to completion, and sentencing women to a lifetime of pain, is WAY beyond infuriating.

I adopted my son as a newborn from Catholic Charities in 1968. He has always been unconditionally loved and today is a loving, caring adult who has a great family and is a wonderful father. I envision his mother being a pregnant teen though I don't know anything about her. I tried to find her a few years ago without success. I hope your son has a great family and is healthy and happy.

I applaud your taking a tragic situation and turning it into advocacy for woman.

about the adoptive parents was what they do for a living and that they live in my same city. The stigma of "unfit mother" that those "counselors" engrained in women of our generation going through similar circumstances is something that no amount of political activity or therapy can remove. Even my son who I did raise has not been able to help erase that, despite how many times he's told me what a "great job" he thinks I did. The idea he has a big brother "missing in action" as he calls it weighs heavily on him at times.

Back then, adoption records were sealed forever. CC told me that what they do with records from that time is to allow birth parents to post bios and medical histories to the file, and to indicate they are willing "to be found." That information is made available to the adopted child in the event THEY ever initiate a search. I think the child is also allowed to post the same and lay in wait for birth parent inquiries to be made. Should either of those two scenarios happen, then all parties are contacted by the adoption services and it goes from there. Failing that, I think even the adopted child does not have any more legal rights than their birth parents.

Many birth parents do not know they can put those feelers out through the adoption services records, so birth parents and adopted kids stay lost to one another forever, unnecessarily. Not only is this sad, it's just plain wrong, but it is an indication of just how arcane this process was just WITHIN OUR LIFETIMES, which makes it all the more pressing to MAKE SURE some idiotic political agenda does not return us to the bad ole days. THANK GOD rape victims and unmarried mothers have more options than I had back then, but I will NEVER trust "family values" politicians not to jack with those advances that were so hard fought.

I cannot begin to tell you how comforting I found your post. I can only hope my first son was as lucky as yours was when it came time to play adoptive parents roulette. Thanks so much for your kind words.

reassure her that he was loved and well taken of. Many adoptive parents still resist having any contact with birth parents but I would welcome it, especially as my son gets older and I have no medical history records. Your post touched my heart.

I should have clarified that. What I'm referring to is the dumbing down of education (in particular science) by using things like what we call jokingly here in TN "the monkey bill." (see link)These things are consistently pushed by the far right, and it's my belief that it has no place in school whatsoever.

My daughter's college roommate lost both of her parents on Flight #93 a month before her wedding. Truly said even though we did not actually know them. Prayers are asked for the residents of Pateros, WA and other communities in North Central Washington State. Due to dry weather, winds and ligthning, we are having the worst fire season in years. Many homes have been destroyed by fire and people have been left homeless, other communities in our area are threatened. Hopefully we will get rain and the firefighters will get a break.
