Seen the furious Sandy victims shouting

Obama said there would be no red tape... no one left behind... blah blah blah. Just more of his lies to make sure he was reelected. Oh well, he got his photo op and LOOKED like a hero. Admit it, Dems, if Bush was still in office, you would be villifying the man over and over again, hypocrites ! ;

Residents are so furious and I don't blame them one bit. This is crazy! I realize what happened didn't affect only one section of a state, but darn it, FEMA has been a disaster since way before Katrina.

It's just that the news media has now focused on them since Katrina.

Obama is now busy trying to talk people into harassing their reps into HIS plans...which, the chart that Rep. Woodall showed today was completely honest (it was blank). He's also too busy thinking about his vacation coming up to worry about nonessential items.

Yes, and Obama is also busy playing at a - toy factory. He is a joke ! nm

What federal government red tape is keeping their houses - from being rebuilt? And, W? NO.

[ In Reply To ..]
I villified W plenty for sitting and doing nothing while Gulf Coast people died in the attics they'd climbed into and refugees worried about their babies dying of dehydration waved frantically at airplanes.

I never villified W for not turning what would be a recovery of years into one of months. That's for those who, no matter how much they may prate about others taking care of themselves, always seem to expect the government to be there for them.

BTW, excepting those living in publically supported projects, ALL those people should have taken care of themselves by purchasing adequate property insurance, including the National flood insurance We The People subsidize at ridiculously low rates because commercial companies can't and won't insure most property in flood zones.

In other words, what's their supposed problem with We The People via the chief national administrator we chose to act for us, President Obama? Haven't we all actually done a very great deal for them already? And aren't we still doing just that? Ultimately, their fellow citizens (us) will have sent trillions of tax dollars to those neighborhoods to help rebuild them.

Evidently, even the insurance companies are - backwards typist

either ignoring these people or only giving them a couple dollars. One woman stated her insurance company gave her $150 and told her that would be it. (that's hard to believe but could be true). Most of the complaints are because FEMA isn't coming around to help, holding back on money, even their town governments aren't doing anything to help.

I feel bad for others that didn't bother with National Flood Insurance just because their family home was there for 50 years and nothing happened, but even living on a hill, you can be flooded out during a hurricane. Living that close to the water, they should have had that insurance.

Now FEMA is thinking about putting those people in house boats...huh?

First of all, all these people want and need are electricity and heat so they can get started repairing their homes. It's a big mess.

A power company guy explained to me why most new - power lines are NOT buried: corruption. Oh,

[ In Reply To ..]
he didn't use that word, but turns out if a state or county wants federal grants for road building it has to put the power lines up on poles. That way, of course, not only the lines have to be maintained, but the land underneath groomed, trees trimmed, etc., etc., etc., etc., for literally millions and millions of miles of contracts with private companies. To say this is lucrative is to put it mildly. If these people want to rail at somebody for their power problems, I suggest they look no farther than Congress. And, of course, those White House tenants known for taking better care of Business than the people who voted for them.

This was explained to me, BTW, when I was arranging for the County to bury 300 yards of power and phone lines from the pole down on the road across our property to the house we were building. The County did it for FREE because they save so much money with underground lines and so many fewer outages occur. Virtually all outages originate in the overhead lines on the roads that they can't do anything about.

Thanks for that info. Hubby is always asking why they - backwards typist

don't bury the lines, not only in cities but in the country, too.

The electric company contracts tree trimming out to different companies every year around here and this year they not only trimmed trees by the road, they came into our yard and did those. I watched them like a hawk because one year they were supposed to cut down a tree, and wound up cutting 2 trees down and they weren't the one causing the problem! Another year our 150 foot pine needed trimming according to them, and they cut EVERY BRANCH off top to bottom on one side of the tree! It died. That pine was at least 75 years old.
Sickening. We have our own stories, but it makes me - too mad to think about. nm

It costs a lot more to bury power lines in the city than in the country.
In some older areas, but remember that most city area was - developed in the last 30 years or so. And
[ In Reply To ..]
the issue isn't simply cost so much as feasibility, including geologic issues, and cost-benefit balances.

Do you think all those people should be allowed to rebuild? - (Not the welfare/projects occupants, of course.)

[ In Reply To ..]
After all, most of the badly hurt neighborhoods are in geographically vulnerable areas. Typically on low ground, perhaps prone to the worst of the winds, salt spray, etc., most were always seen as less desirable and developed with smaller homes, little vacation shacks, etc.

Now, with climate changes and things like 1000-mile-wide storms (not all storms will slack off nicely like Sandy did), shouldn't some of this land will be rezoned for other, public uses?(NOT for coastal homes for wealthy people who can afford to self-insure but would nevertheless insist on expensive government protection next time and the next.)

It'd be very hard on the people who live there, but they could never afford to pay the real costs of insuring and rebuilding their homes again and again, and how much are we all supposed to pay to allow them to keep living there? Plus, all the dangerous rescue efforts, etc.

I'm from the West, and for decades I've opposed allowing housing to run up the desert ravines and mountain ridges that surround Los Angeles in the exact tracks that wild fires take. Trying to save those homes is both hideously expensive for everyone else and dangerous for the firefighters.

Kinda thought OP and others worried about Sandy's victims - might offer a thought on this. Nothing?

There is some buzz that some officials might not allow people affected to rebuild in those areas, but then others in government see the tax revenue that's being lost and are against it, as are the people themselves, since many properties were in the family for generations.

I would stipulate that if they want to rebuild, they do so at their own risk. No government help if something like this happens again. Buy their own insurance and NOT the National Flood Insurance but private policies. I'm sure that would turn some people off.

It sounds cruel but who wants to go through that kind of flooding and stress over and over again?

As for the west with fire danger, I also agree with you on that point. Don't forget those who build on the sides of the mountains that could lose their homes to landslides.

I guess it's just human nature to tease Mother Nature.

I used to appraise in SoCal. There are spectacular views - as soon as you get just a little way up.sm

[ In Reply To ..]
The combination of tall mountains and short if any trees does wonderful things, but in that situation even 40 feet up is a view lot. :)

I basically like your approach to cutting off taxpayer "enabling" of building in risky areas, while leaving people the rights to use of their property if they can. Without safeguards it could turn into yet another case where regular people are pushed out of a desirable area in a land grab by wealthy opportunists. Those who couldn't afford to rebuild without loans or insurance would in most cases be forced to sell to people who could.

Let's Get Back To Benghazi. Sandy Was A Storm.Oct 30, 2012
As I predicted, Obama (and his sycophants) would LOVE Sandy because it would take Benghazi off the front page.  However newsworthy Sandy might be, it has relatively little relevance to anyone's decision with respect to the coming elections.  Anyone can collect food, and anyone can fly around in Air Force One looking like the big cheese after a natural disaster.  These things mean absolutely nothing.
