try and figure out what the reason for this is and do something about THAT, instead of just spouting off implying they are being KEPT from learning. Maybe do away with the freebies? Make the children learn, make them follow rules, suspend them from school when they don't, or when there are fights or other discipline problems. I'm sick and tired about hearing how so many children come from broken homes, one parent homes. So did my children, and they are productive members of society. Get a clue, Michelle. There is a lot more information on her words of wisdom if you care to read them - my computer is acting up.

It wouldn't be her place to give opinions regarding anything of late. Most of her causes are apolitical, like families of armed forces, health-related issues, etc. Did Laura Bush comment on the devastation of the Iraq War?

Also, during slow news cycles, First Lady things get more air time, so it's not that she's not doing anything, it's just not being reported.

Does she know something we don't? Not sure what that means... but okay...

Where in this link can you point to the part where First Lady Michelle Obama says these children are KEPT from learning? Where did she mention broken or one-parent homes? What makes me sick and tired is the utter cluelessness of irrelevant references to African-American student community "feebies" for undisciplined rule breakers stereotypes. For the life of me, I cannot understand how anyone can get their kicks out of dissing school kids and their advocates. Takes all kinds, I guess.

I'm not sure if you are agreeing or disagreeing with the OP, but the idea that black people couldn't or shouldn't be educated is historically accurate.

of what the first lady was talking about, but not with the idea that the OP was referring to prevailing conditions from 150 years ago. The choice of the word "implying" was my first clue, as was the present tense verb in the statement, "implying they ARE being KEPT from learning." Coupled with the overall spiteful tone directed at Michele Obama and the not-so-subtle racist stereotypes, I'm left to conclude that the OP would have been among those folks from 150 years ago who staunchly believed that black people couldn't or shouldn't be educated. I have to say, though, I do appreciate the civility of your response and enjoyed reading the linked article.

maybe the article changed since you posted the link? I didn't see anything about broken homes. I got the article that talked about a hunger for education, which sounds like a positive message.

who evidently attended class, paid attention in class, weren't too busy fighting in class and did manifest the determined "hunger" she reminded them was their legacy. I suspect there was a "don't-forget-where-you-came-from" element to her observation that there is ALWAYS room for improvement within the community in terms of striving for excellence and achievement. Implicit in her remarks is the idea that some among those receiving their sheepskins that day might consider community service to address the problem of high-school drop-outs.

You're right about one thing, though. We've heard enough self-righteous indignation over the self-imposed slacker stereotypes. They tend not to resonate well outside the choir chambers.
