Michelle Obama says exciting new changes (sm)

coming to kids' school lunchrooms this year.  Can hardly wait.  More food for the trashcan.  Please stay out of my kids' lunch, Michelle.  It's none of your business what I feed my kids.

Don't worry, Michelle is not forcing anything on you. You can feed your children whatever you like but why frown upon her efforts to promote healthy eating habits. There are some of us who appreciate the fact that she's concerned about childhood obesity and is trying to do something about it. I don't know how anyone can justify having a negative opinion of that act of kindness; but this is a free country and you have a right to be angry and small minded.

Here's what the Obama girls will be dining on - for lunch today (sm)

physically invade every American female's private parts and have a field day. The phony small government flap coming from the right has less than zero credibility.

Yo - it's about those insignificant little human beings - not your female parts.

[ In Reply To ..]
As I've said before, on the left it's about your uterus. On the right it's about human life - and the most defenseless human life.

I just don't know what to say to anyone who doesn't give a snap of her fingers for defenseless babies, or who doesn't think that abortion should be rare - as opposed to being a casual means of birth control. Believe it or not, you don't have the "right" to murder babies. No one does.

Obama does. He said so. - LM

I don't know what kind of monsters you think your fellow Americans are if you can attach to them that they WANT people to use abortion merely as a means of birth control.

We liberals are not FOR abortion; we are for rights and quality of life for the living. I guess you could say we liberals just give a bigger snap for the defenseless living children and babies who are ignored and left to starve and suffer neglect or abuse by parents and/or indifference by conservatives (citizens and government alike) who claim to care but then cry about their tax dollars paying for food or education for the children who did make it out of the womb. You can’t claim to care about innocent babies when you don’t even want to feed the ones who are living… especially those of you who don’t even want the first lady to try to promote healthy eating habits. And you can't claim to care about innocent children when you don't cry just as loudly about the bombs that are killing children every day in wars that are funded by your tax dollars. What? Do children only matter if they are American? You’re all just a bunch of hypocrites.

Yo-the health of those insignificant humans - out here in the real world

It's the embarrassing Democrats and their Code Pink and Sandra friends who want to parade vaginas around the country. Republicans don't care about your body parts nor do they care what you do with your body. You might tell some of your cohorts in the party to keep their legs closed and Just Say No to sex without birth control. We're tired of paying for your (plural your) illegitimate children, year after year. Even though your spokesperson, Sandra and your president approve of partial birth abortion (throw in trash)there are many who are still born and we have to pay for them. Just Say No.

Pray tell, what do you believe she is - mooching? (s/m)
[ In Reply To ..]
She is a member of their immediate family; and since the first families pay for all of their own personal food, dry-cleaning, clothing, toiletries, and other incidentals....just what do you think she is mooching? A few extra toilet flushes' and a shower's worth of water each day? It would be pretty pathetic to begrudge them that small amount in order to keep their children's lives as secure and normal as possible. The costs to heat and cool the space would be the same, either with or without her there. If she's staying in the family's private living quarters, what does that harm you?

I think the Obamas consider her a vital part of their family and their children's lives, and I admire them for wanting their kids to remain as close to normal as possible while in the White House.
So a mother and a grandmother is a moocher? nm - some attitude.

Umm.. yes, it is everyone's business what kids are being fed - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
if parents are allowing their children to overindulge in junk (or even in food that they don't realize is junk) to the point that they are developing diseases that, until recently, were hardly ever heard of in children. Sorry, but if you let your child eat to the point of morbid obesity, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, etc., they become a burden on the taxpayers and raise healthcare costs. Not to mention the psychological issues that can develop from being picked on and teased with low self esteem issues that can linger way into adulthood. Fat kids are at much higher risk of becoming fat adults where that burden on taxpayers just increases when those diseases start progressing to the point of constant insulin/medication use, amputation, blindness, heart attack, stroke, etc., or just those who eat themselves to the point of becoming disabled. Oh... they also wind up costing their employers more money as well (that would be those job creators everyone adores so much).

Look... big agra is NOT your friend, and the food system in this country is a joke, was not created to promote health, and is a system that is stacked very much against our kids. Most parents don't know (because it's next to impossible to know) what they're putting in their own mouths... let alone what they're putting in their kids' mouths. People need to wake up and realize that the government is not telling you what to eat... but it is helping to make sure you don't know what you're eating. Did you ever wonder why it costs less to get a fully cooked hamburger off a dollar menu at a fast food restaurant than it does to buy a healthy salad? Look into that, and you'll be amazed. Another experiment you might want to try is go into that same fast food restaurant and ask where the food your child is about to eat came from... ALL the ingredients. Where was it grown? What farm did the meat come from? What were the animals fed? Why is there corn in my french fries?

All the first lady is doing is trying to promote healthy habits through moderation and getting up and moving in order to combat obesity. If junk is all that's available, don't eat so much of it, and look for healthy fresh alternatives to fill the gap. Please, tell me what's wrong with that? It's such a minor step in what needs to be done here.

BTW... healthy food does not mean hippie-dippie twigs, grass, and tree bark and does not mean it needs to end up in the trash can. Even a pizza meal can be turned into a very healthy and tasty alternative that kids love and provides nutrition without excessive empty calories.

Boy did this thread disintegrate quickly. sm - VTMT

[ In Reply To ..]
from improving children's nutrition to baby killers. Seems they protest too much. Who would not want their children to eat healthier?

Yeah... and it's a shame - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
because it's an issue that most folks would see eye to eye on after some can get past demonizing the first lady and the whole "government telling us what to eat" thing.

What some folks are putting in their kids' mouths is harming them... all while making a handful of people very, very rich... and most don't even know it or can't get past themselves enough to care.

Getting Up and Moving around is a big part of the problem - backwards typist

[ In Reply To ..]
The kids have it lazy today. They get bused to school (even if it's only 2 blocks) when they could walk. They are too involved in those video games and/or computers and TV shows to even want to get out and walk anymore.

It's a shame. I walked to school in all kinds of weather....1 mile...and one year we had a snow storm 3 feet and school was not called off. Of course, only 5 of us showed up for school that day because our parents wouldn't let us take the day off.

Those were the good ole days. LOL

I agree to a point - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm the person who wrote the post you responded to, and if you ever want to see me go into near lunatic mode, it would be in the morning when I'm trying to get somewhere and I'm stuck behind a school bus that stops at every freakin' block to pick up 1 or 2 kids. The bus stops are literally 1 or 2 houses down from each other... it's ridiculous. When I was growing up, we too had to walk quite far either to school or to meet at 1 bus stop for the area. I also blame some of the lack of outdoor activity to parents being fearful of letting their kids play outside unsupervised. Again, growing up I and all the neighborhood kids were out and about playing outdoors, and the only rule was "be home before dark." With people driving like lunatics as well as stories of actual lunatics, parents are hesitant to let their kids play in the neighborhood because of safety issues.

However, even though I think the lack of activity is part of the problem, it's not all of it, and I don't even think it's the major cause of it... it's the diet. It's the pre-packaged garbage that's cheaper to buy and easier to prepare loaded with preservatives so it doesn't go bad too quickly and loaded with delicious sugar, corn syrup (because corn is NOT sugar after all), salt, and grease to make it taste good and even make us crave it. Our kids aren't any different. They are going to want what tastes good, and parents who may be overworked and don't have extra time to prepare fresh (or can't afford to buy fresh which is completely different but equally infuriating story) are going to reach for a hot dog, a bun, a box of mac & cheese and 2 pots. Dinner is done. Kids have a natural energy level, and when you pack them full of this garbage routinely, they become lethargic - not to mention clumsy and slow - and they might not want to play because they can't keep up with the other kids.

What gets me about this issue is the fact that people are bickering about it. The food system in this country is broken, our children are suffering because of it, and our children's future diabetes and heart disease are fattening the wallets of big agra and big pharma while draining the wallets of everyone else. Instead we discuss whether the first lady is telling us what to eat.

In a local school district in my area, there is no more whole milk - backwards typist

They only have a choice between 1% or skim milk.

Fruits and salads are the mainstay of the lunches this year.

Truthfully? When I was in school, pizza was a treat, once a month if lucky. Chicken nuggets were unknown, hot dogs and hamburgers, tacos, etc. were all unknown. Spaghetti, Shepard's pie,hot roast beef sandwiches were all mainstays. Friday consisted of tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches or mac and cheese with stewed tomatoes. Soup was twice a week with PB&J or "Knickerbocker" sandwiches (which turned out to be ham salad sandwiches), whole milk (no chocolate and no soda), and always fruit, either fresh or canned, for desert. No FF either. Our meals were always balanced with the basic food groups.

Why they decided to start serving unhealthy crap just because kids like those is beyond me. Kids shouldn't have any say over lunches, the schools should have all the say.

This is one place where Michelle is right, but Jamie Oliver started this "revolution" about 5-6 years ago.
