I'll bet you any money if those kids were praising Michelle if she had a great lunch program you'd be the first to post here.

But alas, the lunch program is starving kids and feeding them crap that is not healthy and they speak out against Marie and you don't like that.

It's a really sad day when people don't care about children.

I do believe the garbage that kids are getting fed during this woman's reign is an important issue. Prisoners get better meals than students do. But why should she care. Their daughters get the best of the best for lunches.

If she values our children as little as she is showing she does then don't be surprised when something is said.

And you know what? It's not just the kids. It's the parents who have issues with the rationings. That is parents who feed their children a healthier lunch and whose kids are not overweight. AND it's also a concern of the schools.

But I guess you would rather see kids starve and not be able to learn because they are starving and can't concentrate on their studies, just as long as they don't say anything against Marie's program.

Anger should be directed at Marie, not the kids who are suffering because of her program.

That is the issue. Family's are wanting to go back to feeding their own kids. The kids are starving. You can't feed a 100 pound kid what you feed 30 pound kid. Marie doesn't realize that. But here is a sampling of the garbage rations they are receiving.

a hot dog roll that seemed spread with tomato sauce and cheese, on a tray with three small cherry tomatoes and a carton of lower-fat milk

a small roll and a messy-looking concoction of what appeared to be mashed potatoes, scrambled hamburger and corn

a flat sandwich that seemed to be a hamburger on a tray with a cut kiwi half and a packet of ketchup

Some posters were complaining that schools/Marie should control what the kids eat, and now that it comes out the kids are being fed garbage and small rationings now they say parents should feed their own kids. Can we please make up our minds.

The schools are losing money, the kids are starving, what little rationings they are getting are substandard and not healthy. In turn that means they cannot focus on their studies.

But hey, guess it's better to starve kids and have them not do well in school rather than they, their parents, or the schools try and find a better solution, after all its going against the beloved Marie.

Sheesh!!! Politics before children. What a shame!

not allowed to pack their child's lunch. They are forced to eat the cafeteria food.

As my husband said, "That's one way to 'skinny-up' the kids. Starve them to death!" after I showed him photos of some of the lunches listed in the article. Disgusting to say the least.

Thank heavens, it didn't get to our schools yet. They still get their meat and potatoes, veggies, deserts, bread and butter, and milk every day...Plus they have alternatives like salads and fresh fruits.

Yet here comes Michelle and there goes decent meals for the kids. A 10" tortilla shell with 1 slice of cooked ham lunch meat (not very healthy) and 1 slice of processed cheese (not real cheese) is not my idea of a healthy lunch.

Well I won't say where, basically victims and others not worthy of eating real food. She must be so proud to do this to them, but let her own kids feast not on this garbage.

Your school lunches sound good. There could be a better way, but her blatant disrespect for people in the country is showing.

Growing up we had salads, pizza, meatloaf, sandwiches, grilled chicken and burgers. There was always fresh fruit too.

It's too bad she doesn't think highly of kids to want to do this to them.

The CDC used a different set of years for their statistics instead of going back to when they first started collecting the statistics (about a 5 year difference) and for some reason there was one year that threw the whole thing off. Part of article here:

(Reuters Health) - U.S. childhood obesity rates have increased over the past 14 years, according to a study published on Monday, casting doubt on a recent analysis by government health researchers that found a sharp drop in preschool obesity rates over the past decade.

The good news, announced in February by researchers at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), received widespread media coverage and prompted first lady Michelle Obama to say she was "thrilled at the progress we've made over the last few years in obesity rates among our youngest Americans.

The new study, published online in the medical journal JAMA Pediatrics, used the same data source as the CDC, but analyzed obesity rates over a different timeframe. It found increases in obesity for children age 2 to 19, and a marked rise in the percentage who were severely obese.

Asheley Cockrell Skinner of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, who led the new study, said the main message of her analysis is that childhood obesity rates have not improved.

"I don't want a study like the previous one to change the national discourse," she told Reuters Health, referring to the CDC's work.

Obesity experts had already begun to question the large drop reported by the CDC for children ages 2 to 5. In their February paper the CDC scientists themselves acknowledged the statistical limitations of their data.

CDC researcher Cynthia Ogden, who led the study released in February, said in response that her report described trends over the last 10 years and found "an apparent decline in obesity among children ages 2-5 (which we said in the paper should be interpreted cautiously)."

"We're confident in our analysis for this time period," she wrote in an email to Reuters Health on Monday,

The February report from the CDC found that the rate of obesity among children ages 2 to 5 fell to 8.4 percent in 2011-2012 from 13.9 percent in 2003-2004.

Skinner and her colleagues used the same data as the CDC researchers, from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, but looked at a few additional years.

"In 2003 there was an unusual spike in the number for whatever reason - probably an error," Skinner said. "When you take a long view from 1999 to now, you don't see that decline."

About 27,000 U.S. children between the ages of 2 and 19 were included in the survey between 1999 and 2012.

Children are considered obese when their body mass index, a measure of weight in relation to height, exceeds that of 95 percent of their peers of the same age and sex.

Overall, obesity rates increased from 14.5 percent in the 1999-2000 survey to 17.3 percent in 2011-2012. There was also a marked increase in the rate of severe obesity over the study period, the researchers found. Among preschoolers age 2 to 5, the rate was slightly lower, but that could have been due to chance.

"Even though we don't see huge increases in the rates of children who are overweight or obese, there are clearly more in the categories that are severely obese," Skinner said.

There were especially noticeable increases in the rates of severe obesity among black boys, Hispanic girls and white girls, Skinner said.

Rates for all obesity categories remained relatively unchanged between the 2009-2010 and 2011-2012 surveys.

I have eaten with my granddaughter about 4 times this year and so far have not seen anything that resembles real food except on the salad bar, which the children cannot take any salad, because if they do, they HAVE to eat everything - which means they cannot choose salad as an alternative to what is on their plate. I am from the generation that actually cooked for my kids, this food doesn't appeal to me at all and the amount is not enough to feed a mouse - I asked someone who worked at the school and sees grades K through 8 eat about whether the older kids get more and she said no - they all get the identical same lunch. I guess that's why the minimart only a block from school is thriving - after lunch they all go over there and get their pop and candy to fill them up. Come here and I'll show you the real world, Michelle.
