Put hip-hop videos in schools to help fight obesity. I don't let my kids listen to that garbage. If they try it, I do have a standing in the PTA and will strongly object. I wish she would hip-hop her way back to Chicago where she belongs.

and they like hip-hop. As long as it doesn't have any cursing or inappropriate content, she's helping those kids. The choice of music may not be to your liking, but everyone has different tastes, and if that's the music they like, there's nothing wrong with that.

There's a lot of hip-hip out there that's truly inspiring and carries a really positive message. One group in particular, I've seen three times live. There were all walks of life at the show--cowboys, hippies, preppies, breakdancers--a little something for everyone. :) They put on a great show and let me tell you--it's a workout! I danced all night and was totally sore the next day.

You seem to regard our First Lady as advocating obscene and/or - violent music (?) in our schools? Apparently

Well, regardless of the origins of your attitude, since you feel so strongly, why not go to your own school and tell the principal and teachers THERE in advance that you won't tolerate your children being exposed to hip-hop music? Or if you want to gather the PTA behind you, at the next general meeting stand up in front and speak up just as bravely as you have here.

And I'm suggesting country music and fried food Fridays at the next PTA meeting. And none of that fast stuff neither that'll get 'em all dancing and moving around and whatnot... just some of that good ol' cry-in-your-whiskey nice slow country music about drinking and losing your woman and having no job. Something with a positive message that doesn't burn any calories. How else are these children gonna earn their cool kid all-American morbid obesity badges?

And who does the First Lady think she is trying to help kids eat right and be active in order to avoid diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and self esteem issues that go hand and hand with being obese? What a communist!

Okay... well I'm off to fire off an angry e-mail to Lifetime because they showed some of that hip-hop dancing garbage on Dance Moms. I think they're trying to corrupt our children. Take care.

Of course these kids are going to fight having to eat vegetables. Half of them probably never had an adult tell them they had to eat a veggie. It's depressing.

have sent them a bit hungrier to school and cut off after-school snacks and seen if that helped.

Not only have many kids never routinely had fruits and veggies, what they are eating are things like sugar-coated fatty cereals; fatty salty breaded chicken bits with a major sugar-fix dipping sauce; fatty salty French fries with a sugary catsup dip; coleslaw with a sugary-mayo dressing; sugary chocolate milk; salty fatty mac and faux cheese from a box; salty fatty cheesy pizza; pudding cups.

Of course their palates crave the sugars, fats, and carbs their little bodies have already become addicted to. That's hardly news to the nutrition professionals who are working to change school lunches, but it is a challenge.

So is trying to just say no to private industry's much larger profit margin from selling our children junk food for lunch.

just about everything else. As a result, my children enjoyed eating healthy home-cooked food and didn't expect dinner and lunch to taste like junk food.

Neither ever had a pop-tart in our house, much less for breakfast. They drank milk, water, and some fruit juices (but not in place of milk). There was no soda pop in our home, except for inoccasional treats.

It starts at home.

BTW, the heavy sugar, cheese, bacon? Anyone who's ever searched recipes at Allrecipies.com has probably noticed that any dinner recipe that has at least one of these--and is quick and easy--receives top ratings, no matter how bad it is. Anything loaded up with both cheese and bacon has ratings right through the roof. Same for any meat that's cooked in a sauce that's half sugar. A thousand five-star ratings.

And I had a weight problem until my mid-20's, after I was living on my own and learning how to eat right. I haven't been overweight since, but both my parents are and it's depressing.

And I used to play year-round sports! I can't imagine how much fatter I would have been if I hadn't.

my daughter, and some of her friends, grew up to make me look totally undisciplined. My route was one more of exclusion--the easy route. I only made cookies once every couple of weeks; she makes them often with healthy additions tucked in. HER children ask her for their favorite tofu stir-fry and quinoa salad recipes. Those things weren't being passed around the neighborhood in those days, and if I'd tried to serve them she and her brother would have fed them to the dog when I wasn't looking. They weren't used to eating THAT healthy. I did do carrot sticks. :)

However, the kid's whining, complaining, feeling sorry for himself, inserting his fingers in his ears and refusing to listen, and finally packing up his things and leaving fits right in around here... not to mention the fact that he's very misinformed regarding a healthy diet.

When the subject of MO's efforts to do something about childhood obesity comes up, it brings out the truly ridiculous in some folks, and I figured that King Curtis's argument that bacon is good for him (and everyone!) would be helpful.

There is a lot of kid music around that has been put to a hip-hop beat. I find it funny that you automatically assume hip-hop stands for all things drug/sex/violence when it is obviously not true.

As an aside, I also find it entertaining that you probably have no issue with your kids doing ring around the rosy, which is all about dying of the black plague, versus dancing to a kid-oriented exercise/dance video. Personally, I'd pick fun dance over a plague recital any day.

Any music can fall in the garbage category. I listen to many different types of music and trust me every genres has its garbage. It's kind of like your post, an unintelligent poster kind of garbage. Get a life and come back to the real world where many people exist and have different cultures, believes, languages and oh yeah skin color.
