Applauding Michelle

Posted: Sep 25, 2012

I can't think of a single rational reason why anyone would complain about someone wanting to promote and provide a healthy meal CHOICE for children.  Unfounded complaints like those posted on this board make it easy to see that the real issue lies not with the idea but rather the promoter of the idea.  I'm sure if Barbara or Laura Bush were promoting healthy eating habits, it would be applauded by the very people who currently denigrate it; which could only mean that they denigrate it because it is Michelle Obama promoting it.  And that, my friends, is either ignorance or rascism because no sane person would blast an attempt to help end childhood obesity...

What is it about CHOICE that you don't understand? Michelle is not banning "junk" food; she's promoting healthy eating habits.

it could be a combination of ignorance AND racism. The two aren't mutually exclusive, in fact, they kind of go together, don't they?

yup. same ole bias...intolerance...ignorance...ugliness - just curious...

[ In Reply To ..]
how would you characterize "stuffing her face with french fries"? It sounds pretty hateful to me. No amount of simply disagreeing with someone brings about such vapid, ignorant, hateful language.
I guess you've not seen the pictures. I can find some - for you later. Busy now.

[ In Reply To ..]
Are you so entrenched in your desire to be ugly about the first lady that you fail to understand the difference between fighting childhood obesity and an adult eating french fries? lol. Most people who drink alcohol are against drunk driving. Most people who smoke cigarettes want to keep them out of the hands of youngsters. If all you can do is whip out photos of the first lady eating fries, you need a better argument.
Well then, the only argument I have is to butt out - and stop telling my kids what to eat.
[ In Reply To ..]
nm

[ In Reply To ..]
Then feed your child what you want to feed them. No one is stopping you. I repeat: No one is stopping you. And no one is "telling" your child what to eat. There is nothing wrong with trying to change the institutionalization of fast food culture in our schools.

Have you every visited a loved one in the hospital and watch them eat white bread, artificial flavors, and margarine? We have a poor understanding of nutrition in this country due to our relatively young culture. We are the greatest superpower on the planet. The breadbasket of the world. You don't think we can do better than this at feeding our citizens? That's a shame.
My opinion - me
[ In Reply To ..]
I don't think Obama's spouse or anyone else has the right to tell me or mine what to eat. I agree there is too much childhood obesity, but it's not MO's problem or any of her business. That is a job that belongs to a parent and the parent's physician to implement and enforce. These 2 in the White House really are gung ho with pushing their agenda on everyone they can. They should focus on the foreign policy and the troubles in their administration instead of trying to detract from it with other distractions. She is not much of a class act either in my opinion.
and I think it's a crime... - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
that public schools use our community dollars to provide unwholesome foods to our kids. Why would that be okay in your book?
What is your opinion on Laura Bush's push - to get children to read? SM
[ In Reply To ..]
Do you also think that is none of her business and it should be left up to the parents?
Laura Bush never told the schools - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
what books to read or not read, just encouraged reading in general. Contrast that to what M. O. is doing, then, telling kids what not to eat, Laura Bush would have had to tell them what books not to read. No lib would go for that.
We should all want healthy food in schools. - RC
[ In Reply To ..]

No rights are being impinged upon here. Kids are still going to eat, but they are going to eat BETTER.

Please don't presume to tell me what I should want. - I think for myself (not a lib)
[ In Reply To ..]
nm
so...what are you saying? - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
I'm not sure I understand. If the poster above assumed you would be in favor of healthy foods, that would be reasonable - not presumptuous.
Again, there are no mandates - vf
[ In Reply To ..]
No one is TELLING you or your child what to eat. You can feed your child as much garbage as you choose. And you even have the option of taking your child out of the public school system in order to ensure he/she will be spared intelligent food choices placed before him/her by Michelle Obama. Then, thanks to President Obama, your obese child will have affordable health care to help manage his/her diabetes without putting the burden on the rest of us because of your poor choice.

people young and old eat french fries and can be fit - yes?
[ In Reply To ..]
I would think it would be a good example to demonstrate that we can eat all kinds of foods. We just don't have to eat them to excess, or to the exclusion of other healthy foods and habits. Why are you guys so stuck on this?
I'm not stuck on anything. I don't really care who eats - wannie
[ In Reply To ..]
what, when they eat, if they eat fried, baked, broiled, grilled. I was just commnenting on the fact that children learn by example. Yes, you can eat French fries or anything else in moderation and be healthy. So why not just serve healthy portions at school? BTW, I have no children in school, both of mine are grown and my grandchildren are not yet old enough for school, so I really don't have a dog in this fight, anyway. Once again, I was just commenting.
that doesn't ring true for me - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
I thought you were pointing to the example of Mrs. Obama eating fries. I apologize if I misunderstood. The question I would ask is: What would be a healthy portion of processed, adultered, hydrogenated, non-fresh, non-whole food?
True it is, though. I am not an Obama fan, but anyone - wannie
[ In Reply To ..]
who helps children can't be all bad, lol. I know that eating healthy (even including French fries) is very important. Since those in the political arena have their every move is scrutinized (and that really is sad for them) they just have to be very careful that their actions back their words.

ROFL. Insane ignorant racists? Seriously? Is that what you usually call someone who disagrees with you on anything or anyone? Michelle should be implementing these changes gradually into our children's diets if she wants them to stick.

The problem I have with our first lady is that she comes off as "snooty" to me. I don't feel like she can identify with me on any level. She moves in the circles of the rich and famous and those with Hollywood star power. I could be wrong, but I feel like she is usually playing a part when she is in front of the people. I don't think that is who she really is. She has been quite successful financially in her own right and a lot of her endeavors do not seem to have been all that charitable and filled with good deeds to me.

She set a bad example early on in the presidency by her remarks on being proud of her country for the first time and that one about all this for a d--- flag.

But obviously I was mistaken in thinking I found fault in her for any reason other than she is African American. I will have to take a second look at a few of my friends and family members.

post is rife with suspicion and assumption - what's up with that?

[ In Reply To ..]
lol at snooty. What do you want her to do? Break dance? She's the first lady. Did you happen to miss Nancy Reagan? Under 30 are we?

Here is a photo of Mrs. Bush at a Veterans Day Ceremony. Perhaps she just said something derogatory about our flag:

Here is Mrs. Bush captured in a nanosecond freeze-frame of eating:

Would you say she is stuffing her face? Not setting a good example?

It should be noted that I believe Mrs. Bush loves her country, is fit, and has appropriate eating etiquette.

If someone who is not white tells you that 2 + 2 equals 4, and you find nothing right about that fact, then I would call you ignorant and/or racist... not because you did not agree with me, but because there is no logical reason for you to disagree.

I'm sure these kids didn't buy McD's food. The parents should take responsibility for their kids meals. It shouldn't be left up to the government.

I just heard this morning that Cuomo wants to ban fried chicken, candy bars, etc., etc. from the city (or was it the state?).

When will people start taking responsibility for themselves or don't they know how anymore?

Yes, parents should take responsibility - vf

[ In Reply To ..]
for their children, but that does not mean the government should not play a role in promoting healthy eating habits. Parents should also take responsibility for their children crossing streets safely, but that does not mean the government should not take steps to ensure their safety with laws, speed limits, and crossing signs. I could go on but I think you get my point.

This country is ripe for a Nanny State. They want - gument to take care of them.

"GUMENT"?!? - That's disgusting

[ In Reply To ..]
But you're not racist, right? No. Of course not.
What in tarnation are you talking about - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
gument (or GUMENT) is short for government. You know "gu" (guvern) ment(ment). gument = government.

I even Googled it thinking someone is insane trying to now claim not wanting government running my life is racist and sure enough I am still the sane one.

There is nothing disgusting abbreviating a name. It's done here all the time. Race baiting though? Now that's disgusting.

GET A GRIP!!! Here let me say it for those not getting it. GET A GRIP!!! Abbreviating a word is not disgusting. Oh but wait, you seem perfectly fine with "baggers". GET A GRIP!!!
You know as well as I do - Or at least you SHOULD as a wordsmith
[ In Reply To ..]
That "gument" is imitating a certain vernacular that arises from a certain population in a certain section of this country. To state someone wants the "gument" to take care of them reeks of racism. REEKS.
It's a 2 part shortened slang word. - Not that I know of. (sm)

you know as well as I do, or at least you SHOULD not to assume. Because take away the u & me and thats what this whole phony post is.

Never heard of what you are insinuating and I Googled it and still not coming up with anything, so this whole imaginary race thingy you think you have going on...uh, uh, uh....aint gonna fly. Me thinks you been watching too much Harry Potter. Imaginary spells creating something that doesn't exist is only in fairy tales dear.

So, you have not earned the golden dragon's egg. Ooooh, not EVEN close to a nice try.
Another thought - faux racism outrage no longer works
[ In Reply To ..]
Since as a "wordsmith" you don't understand the meaning of this word:

vernacular
Definition
ver·nac·u·lar
[ vər nákyələr ]
To hear the pronunciation, install Silverlight
ver·nac·u·lars Plural
NOUN
1.
ordinary language: the everyday language of the people in a country or region, as distinct from official or formal language
2.
spoken language: the common spoken language of a people, as distinct from formal written or literary language
3.
language of group: the distinctive vocabulary or language of a profession, group, or class
4.
biology common name: a common name of a plant, animal, or other organism, as distinct from its scientific name
5.
architecture ordinary building style: the local architecture of a place or people, especially the architectural style that is used for ordinary houses as opposed to large official or commercial buildings

Shortening the word government to gvmt, gvnment, gument, guv, or any other shortcuts instead of typing out that longazz word is proper form here on this forum. Trying to incinuate it is racist would be like me saying your post means you want Romney to die.

Additionally, here in the medical transcription world we don't get a whole lot of dictations regarding the government. Even if we did trying to link what you wrote with some faux racism thing is, well its like Harry Potter said to Ron Weasley "how was I suppose to figure that out, that's completely mental".

But go ahead and sit in your imaginary racism world. Enjoy.
a harry potter metaphor for racism - now I've seen it all
[ In Reply To ..]
it just gets scarier.
It's all they have left. Obama is a joke as (sm) - LM
[ In Reply To ..]
president, albeit a scary joke, so they just keep trotting out that tired old race card and trying to insinuate, or sometimes outright accuse us of "hating' him because he's black. It's so old and tired, it's got gray hairs on it, but like I said, it's all they have left - otherwise, they would have to admit he is a total failure and a scary dude.
show me - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
sorry. I can't reference that slang. And not for lack of trying, for I am the google queen. Show us your source or take back the CAPS. No one here is race baiting but you.

I am responding to "tarnation" - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
"what in tarnation" asserted that "gument" is a known abbreviation for government. I cannot substantiate this modern fairy tale.
People abbreviate words... - I AM tarnation
[ In Reply To ..]
I abbreviate government gt, you aint gonna find that anywhere, or str (senator), guvr (governor), etc, etc. I also abbreviate medical words like aao (awake, alert, oriented). Things like that. The point is you don't find a lot of abbreviations on the computer. People don't like to spell out the long words so abbreviations are used. There is nothing to substantiate. I, as did others know gument is short for goverment. Its not a fairly tail sweetie, its just life.

Creating something that doesn't exist, now that's Harry Potter story for you with your modern fairly tales. Except that Harry Potter and fairly tales are good. Creating something that was not there and making things up for the purpose of race bating is anything but good.

Have a nice day.
This is NOT about abbreviations, and I think you know that - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Sorry, tarnation, I don't buy your "explanation".

To say that "gument" is an "abbreviation" is disingenuous. Govt is a well-understood abbreviation, and has even fewer leters. "Gument" is the transliteration of the word "government", as pronounced by people who do not speak correctly.

Refer back to the "nanny state" post, and tell me this: Who would "they" be? Who are "them"?

It's just the school lunch, not breakfast, dinner, - snacks, snacks, etc. SM

[ In Reply To ..]
For goodness sake, this argument that parents should decide what their children eat is a bogus one. If parents want to give kids unhealthy breakfast, dinner, etc., go for it. The obesity problems in this country is staggering. The first lady is trying to educate and provide healthy choices for school lunches. How can anyone be against that?

They also get breakfast in my state - "free" at taxpayer's expense
