I hate it when I work so hard and the CEOs make so much

Posted: Aug 22, 2012

They take all the profits, cut employee benefits, want more work for less pay, and then send their money to Swiss bank accounts so they don't have to pay their fair share of taxes.

This subject reminds me of Ben and Jerry's, the Vermont...sm - VTMT

ice cream company. When Ben and Jerry were running the company they never paid themselves more than their LOWEST paid employee. Most republicans on this board would consider them to be socialists, if not communists. They also provided, helathcare, free child care, and four pints of ice cream a day to bring home as benefits. 10% of their profits also went to charity.

Did they clear the 4 pints of ice cream a day - with Michelle O? - Jess

;)

4 pints of ice cream a day WOULD be - a lot for one person,...

[ In Reply To ..]
....but there's no reason you couldn't share it with others--friends, neighbors, and family....maybe even strangers, if they would trust accepting it from a stranger (I wouldn't--LOL). Ice cream is fine in a balanced diet, with moderation. I'm sure that's what Michelle would recommend since the Obama's seem to get ice cream with their girls now and then.

Contrary to what the Obama haters think, I don't see Michelle as trying to be some kind of nutrition nazi. If you see something wrong with encouraging Americans to eat healthy (but didn't see anything wrong with Nancy Reagan encouraging school kids to just say no to drugs or Laura Bush encouraging kids to read), then I feel kind of sorry for you.
America needs encouragement - to be healthy

I totally agree-- There is such an uproar over healthcare, and meanwhile people are eating themselves into morbid obesity.
No... it would NOT be a lot for one person! - Chris Christie

The lip that Michelle gets about something that should just be plain common sense is absolutely ridiculous. Morbid obesity, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, etc., shouldn't be part of the American dream to strive for. It costs the taxpayers a whole lotta money, too. And somehow the message of eat sensibly and get up and move around once in a while is some form of government control... I don't get it.

And thank goodness we have our first "nazi" of the day. I was starting to think I was on the wrong board.
Whoa, whoa...you misunderstood me, I think. - :-) See message

I'm not sure if you're addressing me or not (but my post is the one your post is In Reply to), but I'm on Michelle Obama's side on this issue. I was saying that I DON'T see her as a nutrition nazi that SOME people seem to think she is. Sorry if I wasn't very clear, or maybe I'm misunderstanding THIS post of yours. :-D

I'm criticizing those who put M.O. down for her fitness campaign as trying to be "controlling" when other Republican first ladies have had their own campaigns with which I bet the M.O. haters saw nothing wrong.

Speaking for just myself, 4 pints of ice cream a day WOULD be a lot! :-D
No... I think you're right on. - Gov. Christie
[ In Reply To ..]
Using the Chris Christie moniker and replying that 4 pints for 1 person isn't a lot was joke.

I'm on her side too, and those who pick on her and try to scream about the "government is telling us what to eat" are ridiculous.

The food system in this country is a complete joke, and while a handful of people are making a whole lot of money, many folks - and sadly many children - are paying the price with an expanding waist line and serious health problems. Addressing the problem with children through motivation and encouragement to eat healthy/in moderation and exercise is more than appropriate and very much needed. I think she's great, and I'm hoping that she stays involved after her time as First Lady and gets even more aggressive in addressing why there is so much junk food in our pantries in the first place as well as why it's more cost effective for lower income families to eat off a fast food dollar menu than it is to buy fresh fruits and veggies. In the meantime, maybe she can nudge the president and remind him of the promise he made about GMO foods being labeled. I think he kinda forgot about that.
Sheesh...I didn't even recognize - GOV. Chris Christie! :-D
[ In Reply To ..]
I was so glazing over the name....durrr. I was thinking that was YOUR name, as in "Christine/Chris/Christie" or something along those lines. :-) That's why I was confused when I read your message, which I wholeheartedly agree with.

I actually think if we could get a handle on the obesity epidemic in this country, we could solve so many other health issues....and, dare I say it, even a lot of social issues we have, too.

Happy, healthy eating!!
There was a lot of sharing going on! nm - VTMT

Do you know the details? - SK

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't know the details of the operation of Ben & Jerry's, but I would want to see an in-depth analysis of their corporate records before I pinned a gold star on their lapel... Until I knew what benefits they were receiving outside of their official paycheck. It's easy for a company owner/CEO to make their bottom line look pretty low while still receiving perks from the corporation that don't appear on their paycheck. Could very well be that the owners were the altar boys of the corporate world, but I would want to see the numbers myself before I said yea or nay.

I don't see the owners of the company as communists, or even socialists -- I see them as benefactors of a free enterprise system in which they were able to run their business any way they chose. In my opinion, if what you're saying is true (and I'm not suggesting it's not -- as I said, I haven't looked into the company), it's an admirable way to run a business and should be a shining example to other entrepreneurs. But in a free society, it's not something that should be mandated by law. We have labor laws that cover that.

Become the CEO - SK

[ In Reply To ..]
That's the beauty of America. We all have that opportunity.

Now, that's not to say we all have the ability or drive, or that it won't be harder for some than others, but the potential is there, as has been shown time after time in the history of our country.

So become that CEO and then run your company the way you would have others run theirs.... Become the flagship for corporate morality.

On the flip side of that, in America we also have the freedom not to work for companies who have policies and practices we don't agree with. It would be pretty hard for a CEO to bank money in Swiss accounts if no one would work for his company because of his immoral, unfair practices.

Now, before I get flamed for the above statements, understand that I realize it's much easier in theory than in practice, especially when one has a family to feed, but my point is that BOTH are OPTIONS. You're not helpless. It all depends on how far you're willing to go to stand in your principles.

cool post - nm

I do want to add one thing though to your question about those poor beleaguered bankers who have been forced to do so much to keep from not being able to pay their debts, that they can’t lend money. If they really are running businesses that are so stressed that they can’t do their basic work, why are they paying themselves so much money? ...

that certainly was true 100 years ago.  Not any longer.  work hard and have your 401K dissolved.  Work hard and your job is going to China.  The decisions in this country are made by the wealthy now.  Corporations count same as humans.  Corporations fund politicians (Boehnert passing out checks from tobacco companies on floor).  Quit swallowing those spoon-fed Fox platitudes. Psychology Of Hate, 7 Stages Of Hate.Aug 27, 2012
I got to wondering once again what is behind some of the behaviors we see on a lot of forums, so I went looking. This link discusses one model, explained by a former FBI behavioral analyst, that is easy to apply to on-line forum discussions, where behaviors would, of course, play out in the first four stages. (The discussion on skinhead groups can be skipped over, if desired, with the actual 7 stages explained below.) It was the last section, though, on how indulging in hate tends to play out ...

MTs Going Through Hard TimesAug 25, 2010
Sometimes, when I read posts about MTs going through hard times (many of us these days), I think about inviting one of them to stay in my home for perhaps a year in order to get a little ahead.  I live alone in a rural area and have a lovely home.  There's not much to do here, but it's pleasant enough, and the cost of living is reasonable.  I've been through a few rough patches myself, but I'm with a pretty stable company now and am enjoying my work.  I ...

Hard Boiled EggsJul 15, 2010
Unless you're making deviled eggs, or want to carry one in your lunch bag, you don't need the hassle of cooking it and then peeling it.  If you're going to chop it up for egg salad or curried eggs, it's way easier just to poach it hard.  Cooks faster and you don't have to deal with peeling them one at a time. I also found a curried egg recipe that I love.  It's super easy.  Just buy a jar of Alfredo sauce (in the spaghetti sauce section), add ch ...

Because Voting In Ohio Just Isn't Hard Enough..smAug 10, 2012
Ohio voting just got a little harder, not because early voting has been cut down, and not because of new ID restrictions. That's right. Republicans are doing everything in their power to ensure a win in Ohio. The latest tactic works on a county by county basis. County by county it is decided whether or not to extend hours at the voting sites. Each county has a commission comprised of two dems and two pubs. You would think this would be a good thing to extend hours in this state right? ...
