Destroying a hard drive...

I have 6 old hard drives sitting on a shelf in a closet just waiting (for years) to be destroyed. I once heard they can be destroyed by drilling a single hole through them. Has anyone ever done this? If so, do I need protective gear? Or, is there another way to destroy them? Thank you for answering.

My suggestion is to focus on what you CAN get from the article rather than on what you cannot.

It has several methods written right in it. It also explains what the goal is: damaging the platters that hold the data.

I think most people could manage pounding a nail through it, even if they did not have a drill, don't you???

I meant I could not get anything to come up using the link. I also had a lot of stuff interfering with the article, ads, etc. Get so aggravated when they cover your whole screen and you have to look hard to see a place to hide them or just click on an x to get rid of them.

I just thought your answer was really not very nice considering I was being truthful about the link not working.

All you need is a sledgehammer, a heavy bag, and safety glasses. And maybe a screwdriver.

You can do it right at the client's location. Simply extract the drive from the computer, pop it in the bag, give it a whack or two, hand the remains back, and collect your fee.

You could also pick up unwanted computer components for disposal or recycling at the same time ... $25 a pop.

I would be happy to pay for such a service.
