Trying hard to respect Obama voters but most

Posted: Nov 13, 2012

do not respect those of us who did not vote for him.

If I am concerned about where the country is headed; is that not my right to feel that way and to talk about it?

Do I totally blame Obama for how the economy is now?  Heck no .. it has been 20-30 years in the making.  It's just that this spending, spending, spending that scares the crap out of me.  It's the government now being able to take money out of my accounts without my permission (in the Obamacare legislation) ... and so forth and so on.  I don't like the government controlling my life and my individual freedoms.  I do personally believe they are in jeopardy.  Maybe not for me, and maybe not my kids, but my grandkids  .. very worried for them.

My parents went through the depression and I remember their stories.  I do feel it is true that history repeats itself .. I'm just hoping we do not repeat Rome .. and that we can survive another depression, that our American spirit can overcome the pervasive selfishness and "give me" "I deserve it to be given to me" attitude.

So .. I just ask that you Obama supporters who think all is well ... just let those of us who are scared and worried vent too .... last I knew, we had that right.

Yes, but then the name calling starts... - Not you, but you know what I mean

I know where you're coming from. It's the way I would be feeling if Romney had won. I completely respect your viewpoint. The thing that makes this country beautiful is everyone is has the right to feel how they feel.

What worries me, though, is when people start denigrating others for thinking differently and then they start pulling out the 2nd grade name calling. I rarely come on this section of the board because it's so hard to find an actual decent intelligent conversation. Once it deteriorates into name calling of any sort, I move right on past. I have no interest in hearing what anyone has to say if they cannot do it in a manner that befits their age and education level and we are all highly educated people on this board.

I hope that those of us who voted for Obama are proven right and your fears are eased. Only time will tell.

Thanks for your reply ... - It's a difficult situation

[ In Reply To ..]
I don't think I have even seen the country so divided, and the degree of truly almost hate is sad/scarey/worrisome.

I truly hope I am wrong too, very much so. It's just I have this little voice that yells at me from time to time (like I had a strong instinct one of the hurricanes was going to hit us and it did) ... well, that little voice is still yelling after a week and I thought it would have shut up by now .. LOL

Have a good evening ..

I agree, but here's what bugs - me a little

[ In Reply To ..]
I understand scared and worried. But what bothers me when things are just thrown out there as fact, and then someone comes up with a link, a legit link, that disproves whatever is thrown out there, and then the person with the link is personally attacked.

I think if we could keep our discussions focused on the issues rather than the messenger, things would go a lot smoother.

Good comment .. thank you. - see message

[ In Reply To ..]
I totally agree about focusing on the issues. The thing about proving stuff with links is I honestly don't trust or believe hardly anything anymore. Guess I have gotten cynical, but the attacks make me so mad - people on both sides just need to grow up.

Example of why I don't always believe links - the widely touted lower unemployment rate right before the election. There are many links proving those numbers .. but ... it was NOT widely reported that a big part of the decline was because they did not have numbers from California.

Have a great evening.. off to sleep now.

Thank you for perfect example of disingenuous post - Caped Crusader

[ In Reply To ..]
Either you don't know that the so called California "mystery" was just Limbaugh bluster disingenuously trying to downplay the good job statistics, or you are still trying to put forward lies. Because I am calling your post as questionable on the truth scale, I guess I am being mean.
Sorry you feel that way .. - see message
[ In Reply To ..]
I do not listen to Limbaugh; I think he is a wingnut. LOL

I actually heard an interview with someone from the California Dept of Labor on those unemployment numbers (or whatever it is called there) on the TV news.

And I don't think you are being mean .. just expressing your opinion, which was the point of my comment.

Then you misinterpreted what you heard - Multi-Source - sm

And I have been called many nasty names by the Conservatives on this Board for pointing out the facts.

See Message, if you "don't hardly believe" - sources, you have no way to gather

information to argue either for or against a post. Since this means you don't believe you can have an informed opinion to offer, perhaps just sitting back and saying something nice when you can would be in order.
What a lovely comment ... LOL .. is that better? - see message

Seriously - do YOU really believe most of what you read and hear? That ship truly sailed for me a long time ago.

I didn't like GWB much, was fairly vocal about my concerns and it was only made worse by the complete dismissal by his supporters, so I understand your feelings all too well.

I'm also sorry that you've dealt with so much utter dismissal from other people on this board and likely in the real world.

While I don't subscribe to many Republican ideals, I do feel that fiscal conservatism serves an important function within our democracy.

Also, while I voted for Obama, I'm not too happy with a lot of his decisions and the general direction of the country, so I can understand where you're coming from with that. And I'm also worried about whether America can pull together after all we've been through.

The main difference in our ideologies is that while you're most worried about the "give me" sentiment in America, I'm most worried about the "Well, I've got mine," attitude. That doesn't mean that your concerns are unfounded and you definitely have the right to vent. The other posters, however, have the right to make a rebuttal. Try not to take it personally, in 4 years, when our party is done ruining the country, your party will probably get another chance to ruin it too.

In summary, there's enough USA left that we'll all get a turn running it into the ground with our one-sided policies and petty hyperbolic bickering.

Deficit is a serious problem - CTMT

If the debt keeps climbing our credit will be downgraded further and once they cannot borrow to keep the spending going they will come after those of us who work " the middle class" problem is there are more takers than there are workers now. Also, inflation will start people and that means things like meat, bread and milk climb. i know people are paying more for gas in their cars than their food bill a month for their families. Gas to go to work and pay more taxes on food, gas, property, etc. I think we all need to prepare for the worst, we see what Greece and Italy is going through. That will be use but much worse, stock up your pantries and be prepared to live off them for a while.

Question for all - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
Why do we accept politicians on both sides of the aisle and in the White House ruining our country? Honestly, when listening to them spout their reasons for support or lack of support for whatever the issue du jour is, I just cringe knowing that that person is making decisions that affect me, my family, friends and neighbors. For example, when I heard Pelosi say regarding Obamacare that you have to pass the bill to know what's in it I was dumbfounded. Now don't get all excited and start calling me names just because I mentioned a Democrat, that was just the example my feeble brain could come up with this early in the morning with only one cup of Joe under my belt. My point is that we should have leaders who we are confident (or at least reasonably confident) can actually run the country, not run the country into the ground, not use the power they have for their own gain, not use the power of govt to be our moral compass, just uphold the Constitution and represent the people who elected them. They need to be made accountable for the way they do their jobs and if they do not do their jobs well they should be fired - just as we would likely be fired if we did a poor job.

I cringe when I see sound byte posts - Caped Crusader

[ In Reply To ..]
I am sure no one took the Pelosi comment on face value and checked the context, right? In case you don't know, she was speaking to the media and the full quote included "reading the bill without the fog of controversy surrounding it." (something like that--I do not recall EXACT quote--you can look it up). If you recall, when the bill was passed, there were huge discussions in the media and elsewhere about different components of the proposed bill. She is addressing that the media would have to read the entire bill to understand what was included and what was not included as it is a large bill.

Sure. But why are you associating yourself with hatemongers - and seditionists at all? People are known by

the company they keep because that company usually tells others a lot about them. Many people's "venting" is despicable and filled with bigotry and bilious attacks. The list of groups of Americans whey are glad enemies of makes up a good 3/4 of our population. It's also filled with willful misinformation needed to support the righteousness that supposedly justifies that behavior.

The important division here isn't red versus blue, it's decent versus indecent, respectful versus disrespectful, responsible versus a drag on humanity. And it's very real.

You can certainly protect yourself from the real disrespect this draws by giving yourself a name and firmly identifying yourself as a respectable, respectful whatever you call yourself, and being careful not to inadvertently support those whose posts are impossible to respect just--because you happened to vote for the same candidate for different reasons.

Just really not sure what you are saying ... but that's okay. - see message

I do not like labels. I am truly neither a Democrat or Rebulican, never have been.

I do agree with this: "The important division here isn't red versus blue, it's decent versus indecent, respectful versus disrespectful, responsible versus a drag on humanity. And it's very real."

Thanks for your reply. Perhaps I will understand it better tomorrow; really tired right now. Long day. (and that is genuine, not snarky, promise)

feel there is anything wrong with your concerns about our country, I have them too, and I voted for Obama. Many of the pubs feel that if we voted for Obama, we are worshipers of him, socialists, communists or whatever else they have called us. I just feel he is the better choice. Do I think he is perfect, do I adore him? Hell no! You are right, this country has been going down for a long time and it is disgusting. Our politicians, all of them, are a bunch of crooks. How can we fix this? If we all got together and didn't vote for anybody, would that solve the problem? I see scandelous stories on both sides of the fence and it scares me too on the people running our country, on both sides. I think things are coming to a head in this country. I don't think it is just Obama, it has been a long time in the making. It has just been escallating and I believe all of us, pubs and dems, are sick of it. I think both sides have a right to be sick of how our country is being run. I think the stuff that is going on now with the states wanting to disown us is showing these politicians what we think. I think that their reasons are wrong, because Obama got elected, but just the fact that they are making a stand is telling our government something. We probably would have had the same thing if Romney won. Make no mistake, he is a crook too. I do seriously share your concerns, even though my guy won. I think greed on both sides is the problem. As it is said, money is the root of all evil and we are seeing that. Maybe betwen now and the next 4 years, somebody who we can all trust can become president and both sides will see this person as a good person instead of a pub or a dem. Who knows, miracles can happen.

Great comment! Thank you .. totally agree! - see message

...you sum up Obama voters as those who cry "give me". That is a biased, class-driven generalization. "Trying hard to respect" means you do not respect. Of course you have the right to talk about the way you feel - and I would defend your right to do so. I just don't know what, exactly, you are trying to say.

You are right, I did make that generalization and - I apologize. see message.

It was late last night; I will have to go back and read exactly how I worded it.

By trying hard to respect, I meant that I am trying not to argue with friends and family who did vote for President Obama, to listen to them and to try to understand what perhaps I am missing.

Thanks for the reply.
