Because voting in Ohio just isn't hard enough..sm

Posted: Aug 10, 2012

Ohio voting just got a little harder, not because early voting has been cut down, and not because of new ID restrictions. That's right. Republicans are doing everything in their power to ensure a win in Ohio. The latest tactic works on a county by county basis.

County by county it is decided whether or not to extend hours at the voting sites. Each county has a commission comprised of two dems and two pubs. You would think this would be a good thing to extend hours in this state right? Dems think its a great idea. So when voting to take this action, of course, the dems in every county voted "yes" to extend the hours. Pubs also voted "yes," but only in counties that vote red. In counties that vote blue, they said no. So what happens when the pubs vote "no" and make it a tie? Well, the secretary of state (Jon Husted, republican) breaks the tie, and it just so happens that he has said "no" to every tie.

The result? If you live in a repblican dominated county, the hours that you can vote have been extended. If you live in a democratic dominated county, no such luck. And they supposedly worry about voter fraud...LOL. How about straight up election manipulation?

I don't think I've seen such a blatant attempt at voter suppression since the time when women couldn't vote.

Here's what intrastate voter suppression - looks like

[ In Reply To ..]
Since the last election, 2.7 million living voters have been purged from the rolls. The demographic and geographic criteria used in intrastate suppression efforts to identify target populations and produce these results are as follows:

1. Urbanity. Cities are disproportionately purged.
2. Race. Minorities are disproportionately purged.
3. Marital status. Unmarried people are disproportionately purged.
4. Age. Younger (under 40) and older (65+) voters are purged more frequently.
5. County effects. Significant differences across county lines (as your post suggests) demonstrate sharp discontinuities based on arbitrary boundaries, that do not correspond to inherent behavioral differences.

At the very least, polling hours should be uniform across the state. It is also patently absurd to allow some voters to vote early while excluding others, as the DOJ challenge to Ohio early voting restrictions seeks to correct. It’s worth mentioning that there is no good reason polls should only be open when employed folks ARE AT WORK. Ridiculous

You can thank Obama for the 4 cpl you're making and all the people out of work. Yes, go ahead and vote for the person that cares nothing about Americans. Clinton did a study while in office on VR and how many MT's it'd put out of work, he chose to not give tax breaks to physician's who use it. Obama was all giddy about doing it. Look what it's done. There's your man in action!

Actually its 5....lol...sm - JTBB

And I personally don't have a problem with VR. I do, however, have a problem with offshoring...remember that bill that just got trashed that would bring jobs back to the US?...yeah..that one...the one pubs tried to piggyback with an amendment to kill Obamacare...again.

One question though...exactly what does all this have to do with voter suppression in Ohio?

unfortunate conclusions... - ctmt

Mr. Obama is not responsible for the wages offered by private corporations, nor does he offer tax breaks to physicians who use voice recognition.

I know it's frustrating, but it's not the president's fault. We can only change things if we identify what the real problems are.

This is the way it's been forever. - Zville MT

And when dems are in control, they do the same thing.

I guess I don't see the big deal with extended voting time. Why do we need a week or more to vote? I know there has to be special consideration for those in the military, but if you can't make it on the day of the election, you can easily request an absentee ballot - my parents voted last month.

I would actually challenge you to show...sm - JTBB

where and when this was done by the dems in such a manner so as to negatively impact just republican voters.

In Ohio in 2004 voting was a nightmare with people having to wait in line for 10+ hours just to vote, and many unable to wait that long. After that, they extended early voting statewide in order to accommodate the sheer number of voters.

Now, all the sudden they want to cut out 3 days of that early voting which included "Souls to the Polls" Sunday (churches urging ppl to vote on this day). On this Sunday in 2008 over 100,000 ppl voted in Ohio. Keep in mind, pubs originally wanted to cut out like 24 (or around that) days of early voting.

Now, regardless of what party you're in, why would you cut a day out when you have 100,000 people voting? The fact that people are using early voting in these kinds of numbers as well as there still being lines on traditional 'voting day,' shows an obvious need for early voting.

However, a lot more dems use these early days (these three in particular) than pubs. This is combined with new ID laws to protect against nonexistent voter fraud, which also negatively impacts disproportionately democratic low income voters who either don't have the transportation to get the ID, don't have the money for the ID, or better yet, don't even know about the changes.

And now on top of that you add counties extending voting times in republican counties and not in democratic ones.

The big deal is that Ohio is a HUGE swing state, as we all know, and could easily decide the election. Obviously, pubs would like to make sure they win there, and are taking steps to ensure it.
