I don't like political games, but the pubs

Posted: May 6, 2017

The fallout is beginning on that disaster of a plan that the pubs put out.

Somebody in another post said that people get used to "goodies" and are not going to give them up.  I really don't believe having access to healthcare is a "goody" but people did get used to having it and now they may not be able to.

I have been for national healthcare long before the ACA.  Many countries laugh at us becaue we don't have it.  We are supposed to be a leader yet our leaders don't think healthy citizens make productive citizens.  We don't even lead the world in healthcare but we do lead the world in healthcare costs.

Our health is not something to play with as the pubs just may find out.

;

We treat way more people than other countries. If you need - immediate care that is what urgent care

[ In Reply To ..]
is for, plus if it is a true emergency that is what ERs are for and 911.

Canadians come here. Sheiks come here.

Let's just tax EVERYBODY 35% for "free" health care, have it on pay stub like Medicare and SS separately. That way everyone will have skin in the game.

This article is interesting. It goes over pros - and cons of all types of systems

[ In Reply To ..]
and people here go to other countries for certain healthcare needs. So what's your point?

I like the one in Germany myself. I've read other articles on their system and talked to people over there who love it.

Remember many of these countries don't have to pay for a - military and they are not the size of

the USA.

America was founded on individualism and freedom. Of course that has been lost to today's generation.
What the Republican health care bill gets right. - Now that Obamcare replacement
[ In Reply To ..]
bill has passed the House and is moving on to the more centrist Senate, the real debate begins. What is the true purpose of health insurance, and what is our government’s goal in ensuring we have it?

I learn from my patients every day about the benefits, limitations and contradictions of their health insurance. One charming 60-year-old with severe seasonal allergies insists on seeing me every few weeks this time of year, even though I tell her she doesn’t need to — her antihistamines and nasal spray treatment rarely changes. But she worries that her allergies could be hiding an infection, so I investigate her sinuses, throat, lungs and ears. I reassure her, and her insurance (which she buys through New York’s Obamacare exchange) covers the bill.

If she was responsible for more than a small co-payment for these visits, I’m sure I would see her less often.

We pride ourselves on being a compassionate society, and insurance companies use this to manipulate us into sharing the costs of other people’s excessive health care. Meanwhile, 5 percent of Americans generate more than 50 percent of health care expenses. Why shouldn’t a patient who continues to see me unnecessarily pay more?

The government’s job is to maintain public health and safety. It should ensure that insurance plans include mandatory benefits like emergency, epidemic, vaccine and addiction coverage. The Republican bill would let states apply for waivers to define these benefits differently; it would be a big mistake to drop such coverage entirely. But Obamacare went well beyond these essentials, by mandating an overstuffed price fixed meal filled with benefits like maternity and mental health coverage that drove smaller insurers with fewer options out of the market. The few that remain often have a monopoly, and premiums rise.

Speaking of compassion, how about some for the 20-something construction worker who can’t afford to pay his rent because his premiums help subsidize overusers like my allergy sufferer? Why shouldn’t a patient who is risk-averse pay more for coverage she might never need, while that construction worker be allowed to choose a cheaper insurance plan that might cover only the essentials?

In addition to limiting the menu of essential benefits, the House bill would let states create high-risk pools for patients with pre-existing conditions who had let their insurance coverage lapse, and who could then be charged premiums more in keeping with their health care needs. This is the only way to make insurance affordable for most consumers; pre-existing conditions will continue to drive up premiums if everyone is compelled to pay the same price.

These risk-pool premiums can and should be subsidized by the government. A recent report from the Kaiser Family Foundation found that high-risk pools can work, but have been historically underfunded. Trumpcare should change that — though it will cost more than the House bill’s $8 billion in additional funding. Drastic cuts to Medicaid should also be reversed, which could help the bill pass the Senate.

But the bill is on the right track. Americans believe that insurance provides access to care, when in fact it is the gatekeeper that often denies care. Many think Obamacare is generous, and yet I often have to fight for essential care for my patients. We need to be more pragmatic, and less emotional, about this issue.

Jimmy Kimmel’s contention this week that a child like his would not receive lifesaving surgery for his congenital heart problem without Obamacare may tug at the heartstrings, but it is neither fair nor accurate. Employer-based health insurance, which covers 170 million Americans, including, no doubt, Mr. Kimmel, would have paid for this infant’s needs with or without Obamacare. Even if the Republican plan replaced Obamacare, and even if the infant didn’t have employer-provided insurance, the treatment would still be covered, either through a traditional plan or a high-risk pool. And at the end of the day, a federal law, the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act, guarantees this kind of treatment, whether we have Obamacare or Trumpcare.

The final question concerns the skyrocketing costs of innovation, and how one-size-fits-all insurance can possibly continue to pay for it. My 93-year-old father, a retired engineer, just received a $50,000 catheter-inserted aortic valve, which was covered by Medicare. But if all such high-tech devices are covered, it will be practically impossible for any insurance company not to go belly-up. The tax-free savings accounts that the House bill would expand and make more flexible are a far better way to pay for this kind of care. Shouldn’t my father and those like him be asked to save their own money for just this sort of rainy day?

Or should we continue to overload health insurance with all our fears and expectations?
Jimmy Kimmel's false claims - are politically motivated or ignorant

No hospital would let a child who needed care die because they did not have insurance.  Intelligent people SHOULD know this but unfortunately Jimmy Kimmel has helped spread the ignorance that if you have no insurance you get no treatment.  This goes for infants through old age, anyone needing emergency treatment will get treatment no matter if they have Medicare, Medicaid, Obamacare, Trumpcare or no insurance at all.  I worked in admissions in the Emergency Department and NEVER EVER has a patient needing immediate treatment been turned away for lack of insurance.

Two dislikes on the above post. Disagree hospital - would treat patient w/o insurance?
[ In Reply To ..]
Or are you Democrats who do not want the truth to be exposed?

You do know that the hospital could be sued for not providing treatment right?
I personally think the - like and dislike buttons...
[ In Reply To ..]
are so elementary and find them rather silly.

Besides the fact that the board is heavy-leaning Trump/Republican-hating Liberals, so you can always expect to have more response from the hating liberal side anyway.

Somehow it makes them feel more powerful I suppose, having more likes and dislikes on a post, and since it is all they have left to help them feel better, then so be it. ;)
The dislikes were on an anti-Trump point of view - I do not feel powerful, I feel confused.
[ In Reply To ..]
If you are going to dislike a point of view, please have the intelligence and courtesy to say why. Otherwise it looks like you are not intelligent enough to counter an opinion. So dislikes are irrelevant. Sounds like the Democrats dislike just because and cannot explain why.
If I disagree with a Trump supporter view and - point out why with a source
[ In Reply To ..]
I get told it's fake news and my source is unreliable, so I just plain old don't care if they believe it or not. The proof of this thug and his administration's doings are out there but you choose not to believe them or divert to OBama or Hillary. The pubs plan is a disaster and it is going to hurt them politically and I don't care if you believe it, you'll just have to wait and see what the final plan is and then you and I will reap the disastrous consequences. But the pubs will lose their seats and that's a fact, again, don't care if you believe it.
Emergency treatment vs continued longterm - management and care
[ In Reply To ..]
Yes, they are required to stabilize, but the return visits and continued care become very fuzzy for the economically marginalized. I don't think Kimmel said HIS baby would have lacked care, but was putting himself and his family in other's less fortunate shoes.
Well, I did utilization review... - and it would depend
[ In Reply To ..]
on the insurance company if the patient was actually admitted to the hospital, not just seen in the emergency room. In the emergency room you will be treated for your emergency condition or shipped off to another hospital if you don't have the ability to treat. BUT If the patient is admitted the first call is to the insurance company, and if the parents do not have money to pay for a surgery, either the kid doesn't get it or the parents are going to be in debt to the hospital for the rest of their lives... even if the surgery does not work!
So are you saying once admitted to hospital - the hospital can kick out the uninsured?
[ In Reply To ..]
You are saying if the hospital finds a patient is uninsured and needs life-saving surgery they will kick the patient out to fend for themselves?

That is very difficult to believe. Doing transcription over the years, the hospital staff ensures the patient is stable and will receive follow-up care either in nursing home or from in-home help.

My sister has pre-existing condition and wanted to go home to recover from chemotherapy. The only way she could go home is to have visiting nurse. She is way under-insured and owes 20% of her hospital and doctor costs. No way would the doctor allow her to go home to look after herself.
Even the insured...they may not actually - boot them out the door...
[ In Reply To ..]
but they will tell the person, hey! your insurance isn't paying, the rest of your stay is on you. That often gets the patient moving out the door PDQ.
So if the patient is not fully insured, the hospital - won't boot them BUT
[ In Reply To ..]
they will let them go home in bad condition without follow up care or ensuring they are safe to take care of themselves?

My sister had a choice to go home with a visiting nurse or to a skilled nursing facility. No way could she be allowed to try to make it on her own because of side effects of chemotherapy and weakness. And she was 20% responsible for all medical bills. Social work helped make arrangements and gave her options.
Social work will help - and may be able
[ In Reply To ..]
to sign the patient up for Medicaid if they don't have personal resources... that is, if Medicaid survives the GOP and Trump administration. Some hospitals may have a discretionary fund for charity care, but hey! Hospitals are businesses, too, at this point. If they are to stay open to serve other patients they have to operate at a profit, right?
And many of them have good military and - healthcare
[ In Reply To ..]
The example of healthcare I liked was Germany. They are ranked 9th in the world for military power.

Is individualism and freedom why we took the land from the Native Americans? Is freedom why people owned slaves? We actually live in a take all you can and screw everybody else kind of country.

Who rebuilt Europe after WWII? America. Why does - the left always look at the bad and
[ In Reply To ..]
never the good?
That's really what this is all about. Redistribution because - America is "bad" and deserves it.
[ In Reply To ..]
They are actually being taught this in college.

I know someone whose daughter went to college somewhere in New York and came home totally changed with a leftist point of view. No conservative thought allowed there. She hates America now and thinks our founding was illegitimate. They are actually being taught that.

They are also taught that it was the Republicans who did this, but in fact it was the Democrats. After watching Dinesh's movie I think she has been "exorcised" from the leftist indoctrination.
The Supreme Court ruled back then that moving the - Cherokees was unconstitutional but Democrat
[ In Reply To ..]
Jackson did it anyway.

I wonder how much of real history is taught now.
Funny, my kid thinks all politicians are - crooked. He made his
[ In Reply To ..]
own views on that and wasn't "exorcised" by anybody. Also, he wasn't "taught that it was the Republicans who did this," he thinks they both suck. He also doesn't like Trump or Hillary but does feel that Trump was a bad choice because you do need someone who knows politics and how to play their games, not because he thinks it is good but because that is how it is.
Why did you bring up America's past but not Germany's? They - started WWI and WWII, yet you
[ In Reply To ..]
give them a pass! Bias much?
What!!!! It has nothing to do with Nazi Germany - it has to do with their current
[ In Reply To ..]
status. They take care of their citizens now, that was my point and nothing more.

I brought up the part about individualism and freedom in our country because the post I responded to brought it up.
So do we. Medicare, Medicaid, ADC, welfare, - the list goes on.
[ In Reply To ..]
xx
and those don't help everybody, like the ones - on here who complain
[ In Reply To ..]
about those programs. Other countries take care of all their citizens equally.

Have you researched how other countries do it? Since we have so many people complaining about insurance in this country maybe that means we aren't doing that right. It never hurts to just look into what other countries do unless you are just so close-minded to think that ours is the best. If it was, why are so many complaining?
Our current country takes care of our citizens too. - If we are so bad why do people want
[ In Reply To ..]
to still come here? Why don't they go to Germany?
They are moving there too. My post was - about their healthcare
[ In Reply To ..]
I didn't say people don't want to come here. Stop trying to twist what I was talking about.

I've never thought our country wasn't great; that would be Trump since apparently he wants to make America great again. You need to address that with him.

All I was talking about was their insurance and how it is nice. Maybe our government should look into how other countries do insurance that helps everybody instead of just the wealthy.

HAHAHAHA!

They didn't and aren't exempt. Do a little - bit more research

[ In Reply To ..]
Just search for "congress exempt from Obamacare" and you will see they are not. If I post a source you will call it fake so find your own source but they are not exempt.

It did cut the deficit, it did create jobs - as far as the other points

[ In Reply To ..]
People not following the rules are the ones that caused that.

We'll see what happens if the pubs push their disaster of a plan. You will most likely be wishing the ACA was back.

Oh, "HAHAHAHA!" Though I find nothing funny about any of it but you apparently do so we'll laugh together.

Don't you remember Cruz signing up when - his wife lost/quit job?

There are so many things people can do for themselves instead of - going to the doctor, A1c, urine tests,

[ In Reply To ..]
you can even get a high resolution ultrasound colon exam much cheaper than a colonoscopy. If people would take the time to educate themselves, they can do so much on their own.

Who said they couldn't? This has nothing to - do with the plan that

[ In Reply To ..]
will take people's insurance away from them.

And yet, as many of you well know, we'll shell out the bucks for noncitizens - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
Let's be honest here. From our work, we know the type of medical care, tests, meds, preventative care, etc. that is doled out to illegals and refugees. Do you think those benefiting from this care are paying for it? No, the taxpayers are. The newest healthcare plan isn't any better than Obamacare but be honest, legal taxpaying citizens are screwed no matter what.

Forgot to add a little sad story about a friend - anon

[ In Reply To ..]
My family and I lost a dear, close friend to cancer because he could not get the care he needed. He was Mexican but came to the US legally. He didn't the healthcare he needed and he lost his life because of this. He had only one option - full pay for Obamacare and he couldn't afford it. Point is - had he come here illegally, he would've had coverage. I know this is fact as my brother-in-law works in an industry that employs many illegals. They've all gotten US handouts while working under the table.
