Not sure how this makes it any more political? This doesn't mean there will be charges or a government trial. And it is not a new investigation, it started in the beginning. I'm guessing the DOJ made the statement to reassure some people that the DOJ is looking at the civil rights aspect. I doubt there will be a federal case, but the Martin's still have the right to a civil case if they can endure another trial.

So, it will be kinda hard for the DOJ to rule differently.

In an interview with Al Sharpton last night, he stated he was going to the DOJ to "get them to file hate crime charges" against GZ. Didn't know he was part of federal law enforcement.

Jesse Jackson is told the host of Fox that if she thinks race was not a factor, she was blind....uh, I do believe she is black and what is wrong with anyone thinking race was not a factor?

Sorry you misunderstood my general reference to hate crimes. You do realize there's a difference between the two, don't you? It's my opinion a hate crime happened, not something I am expecting from the DOJ, but now that you bring it up I will say this much.

The FBI investigation was brief (a few weeks) and superficial. They interviewed the former fiancee, coworkers and friends, who said there were no specific instances of racism and claimed that the killer is “pleasant” and “outgoing.” Ain't that special?

DOJ, on the other hand, started an investigation last year, but stepped aside when the state finally decided to prosecute. They will now be resuming the case because of the acquittal and will be looking for CR violations with a fine-toothed comb. Betcha they spend more than a few weeks doing so.

Haven't had time to research possible charges, but do know the burden of proof sets the same high bar of "beyond a reasonable doubt," whereas the civil actions only require preponderance of the evidence. That's why I said what I did in the previous post. Whether or not these inquiries result in formal charges is not nearly as much of an issue to me as it is just to see the national dialogue on racism be brought front and center and kept under the microscope for as long as possible. Long overdue from where I sit, and will probably make 2014 a LOT more interesting.

Also, there is the added bonus of seeing GZ stay on the legal hot seat for another year or two, what with the DOJ and civil cases he will be embroiled in. Ya just never know what will turn up in the way of new evidence once the weasel has to take the stand and defend his own actions. Would love to see someone like Lisa Bloom on a diverse prosecution team, with maybe a Hispanic, black and male Anglo thrown in for good measure. I think she's up to the task of facing down O'Mara and his arrogant "immunity" threat, which he ultimately was not able to deliver on last time around, and his statement last night that GZ's days in court are over. As if.

Well I think the political mob has threatened Lester Holt in some way.
