I appreciate Senator Tim Scott (R-SC)

Posted: Jul 14, 2016

If you think African Americans are not targeted or racially profiled, listen to this guy, a black GOP senator who was stopped 7 times by cops last year. I have linked it, but also here is his statement yesterday. It is powerful because it is his personal experience.

Scott’s address on Wednesday came after four other senators urged their colleagues to take a vote on criminal justice reform ― something many lawmakers say is badly needed.

“There is a deep divide between the black community and law enforcement ― a trust gap,” Scott said. “We cannot ignore these issues. Because while so many officers do good ― and we should be very thankful in support of all those officers that do good ― some simply do not. I’ve experienced it myself.”

Scott said he chose to talk about his encounters with police, experiences that left him feeling humiliated and “very scared,” because he’s heard people trying to paint Castile and Walter Scott ― a black man who was killed by a police officer in South Carolina last year while running away ― as criminals.

“OK, then,” Scott said. “I will share with you some of my own experiences.”

He continued:

I shuddered when I heard Eric Garner say “I cannot breathe.” I wept when I watched Walter Scott turn and run away and get shot and killed. And I broke when I heard the 4-year-old daughter of Philando Castile’s girlfriend tell her mother, “It’s OK, I’m right here with you”...

In the course of one year, I’ve been stopped seven times by law enforcement officers. Not four, not five, not six, but seven times in one year as an elected official. Was I speeding sometimes? Sure. But the vast majority of the times, I was pulled over for nothing more than driving a new car in the wrong neighborhood, or some other reason just as trivial...

It’s easy to identify a U.S. senator by our pin. I recall walking into an office building just last year after being here for five years on the Capitol, and the officer looked at me, with a little attitude, and said: “The pin, I know. You, I don’t. Show me your ID.” I’ll tell you, I was thinking to myself, “Either he thinks I’m committing a crime, impersonating a member of Congress” ― or, or what? Well, I’ll tell you that later that evening I received a phone call from his supervisor apologizing for the behavior. Mr. President, that is at least the third phone call that I’ve received from a supervisor or the chief of police since I’ve been in the Senate.

Scott is hardly alone. When The Huffington Post asked several black congressmen about their experiences with racism after the 2013 killing of Trayvon Martin, they had remarkably similar stories to tell.

Scott went on to tell another story of when he was invited to an event with two of his staffers and two officers. “All four were white, and me,” he said.

When they arrived, the organizers didn’t want to let Scott in, but they allowed everyone else. The officers refused to go in without him.

“This is a situation that happens all across the country, whether we want to recognize it or not,” Scott said. “It may not happen 1,000 times a day, but it happens too many times a day.”

Scott ended his speech by calling on his colleagues to “recognize that just because you do not feel the pain, the anguish, of another does not mean it does not exist.”

Ignoring it, he said, will only leave people “blind,” and the nation “very vulnerable.”

This is the same Tim Scott involved in a secretive meeting - with Republicans to stop Trump.

[ In Reply To ..]
Along with Mitch McConnell and some of the Republicans establishment working with crony types who already voiced their support for Hillar

ALL the masks are coming off including Paul Ryan, Tom Cotton, Cory - Gardner, Tim Scott, Rob Portman,

[ In Reply To ..]
and Ben Sasse who said they will not support Trump

Again, this article has absolutely nothing - to do with Trump

[ In Reply To ..]
For a change. I mean don't we see enough of that idiot 24/7 in the free coverage the media breathlessly provides every time he opens up his idiotic mouth and a slew of garbage comes out? I just mute it and/or turn it off now when the omnipresent Trump spot (usually at least half an hour of nonsense and offensive meandering, no policy, no nothing) comes on.

What Senator Scott has to say is just his experience as an African American and how even as a Senator he has been profiled. No Trump, I promise.

He is speaking to his experience with racial - profiling, not Trump

[ In Reply To ..]
So I guess if you love Trump you can't listen to anything anyone ever said on whatever topic because they are against your idol?

Trump does not poll well with African Americans and can you guess why? It is his right to work against Trump if he wishes to in his capacity as a Senator.

This article is simply verbatim this man's experience being a black senator in Washington and how that has not made one bit of difference to the reaction police officers have had to him.

So a little perspective, maybe.

Maybe some of us wonder about ulterior motives - when it comes to the establishment.

[ In Reply To ..]
xx
How can he have an ulterior motive in - speaking about his experience?
[ In Reply To ..]
In this capacity he is not the "establishment," he is simply a black man explaining why he thinks everything is not hunky dory between police and African Americans based on personal experience.

Honestly, I cannot see how this can have an ulterior anti-Trump motive.

He's also pro amnesty. - NM

He'll probably get his own show on PBS now late Gates. - did

[ In Reply To ..]

Oh, you mean like Newt Gingrich, Mike Huckabee - etc ad nauseam at Fox?

[ In Reply To ..]
And no I don't think that's what he is angling for. For a black man to be elected a senator as a Republican in a red state like South Carolina is unusual, for him to speak up about racial profiling he has experienced is actually a brave thing to do.

I don't get why just because he is anti-Trump means he has to be discredited somehow when talking about his experience with racial profiling, that's all. It is really not necessary to do character assassination just because he is not on board with Trump (or whatever reason).
Gingrich had a show on CNN, not Fox. - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
Your bias against Fox is showing. LOL

Fox is fair and balanced. Deal with it.
But Fox suspending ties with him - because of VP prospects
[ In Reply To ..]
Are you telling me he is not on their payroll? Well, Google just told me he is on their payroll, except now he is off due to Trump VP.

I don't agree that Fox is fair and balanced. Fact checking finds their claims are mostly false, but that doesn't seem to matter to them.

Fox is not news, it's infotainment for conservatives. How about you deal with it?

Except for the occasional Masterpiece Theater and Antique Road - Show, this is miss see TV.

[ In Reply To ..]
nm
Have you watched the show? - I think it is great
[ In Reply To ..]
Dr. Gates show I mean. It is just fascinating to see someone's ancestors and their surprise, the genetic DNA testing is also often a revelation.

I really don't think Dr. Gates got the show because of what happened to him, it has nothing to do with it, but I personally enjoy the show very much and wish I could afford to find out about my ancestors.

A leftist commentator I heard claims Scott is a well-known - traffic scofflaw with many unpaid

[ In Reply To ..]
tickets for moving violations - and that’s why he gets pulled over so much.

Really, a "leftist" commentator - claims this?

[ In Reply To ..]
First of all, would not a "leftist" commentator be on his side, because us "leftists" are the only ones who actually acknowledge racial profiling exists?

So, if anyone put that out there I would wager it was along the lines of every single "conservative" post in response to my original post, which all seem to involve conspiracy theories from being anti-Trump to driving the wrong car.

Conservatives are the ones who don't want to believe this, despite the fact that Tim Scott himself is extremely conservative.

Please don't tell me to Google, I did! What came up with Tim Scott's name and traffic violations was nada, nothing, zilch. So if you can give us the name of the "leftist commentator" so I can research that it would be much appreciated.
Hint, CNN. - NM

Hint, CNN is not liberal - It is Fox Lite
[ In Reply To ..]
And really, nothing more solid than you might have heard/seen it on CNN? Pretty weak tea.

My brother was constantly being pulled over by the police in a - certain county we lives in, but

[ In Reply To ..]
it was because of the type of car he drove. He was a target.

Some vehicles (not the driver) do attract more attention for - a variety of reasons.

[ In Reply To ..]
One of the responsibilities of the police obviously has to do with enforcing traffic laws, noise ordinances, etc.

It's interesting to speculate whether a racing club might accuse the police of "profiling" for paying more attention to "street rods", "muscle cars", etc. with respect to their enforcement of traffic laws than they would to "your father's Oldsmobile."

The analogy is quite interesting, and on first consideration, I must say that it seems parallel to the accusation of "profiling" of certain groups by the police with respect to the commission of crimes.

One way to test a social phenomenon is to propose the OPPOSITE of the premise that you are testing.

"Police focus on family cars in order to halt drag racing."

"Police question thousands of little old white ladies in wheelchairs in effort to combat armed robberies."

Nonsensical, right? Of course.

How about this: "Police focus on those who have a higher likelihood of committing crimes, carrying guns and resisting the police in the lawful performance of their responsibilities and duties."

Not nonsensical at all, is it? Of course.

This is where we must be able to discuss REALITIES if we are ever going to identify and deal with any inequities that might exist IN REALITY.

Until we start talking about THE BLACK COMMUNITY, REAL CONDITIONS IN THE BLACK COMMUNITY, UNEMPLOYMENT IN THE BLACK COMMUNITY, CRIMINAL ACTIVITY IN THE BLACK COMMUNITY, FAMILY DETERIORATION IN THE BLACK COMMUNITY, etc., WE CANNOT DEAL WITH ANY OF THESE ISSUES PROPERLY!

As a white American, I am in total sympathy with the plight of minorities in our society. BUT I WANT TO ADDRESS CAUSES, AND FIND SOLUTIONS THAT LIFT PEOPLE UP AND HONOR THEIR INDIVIDUAL GIFTS, RATHER THAN "EASY ANSWERS" THAT BIND PEOPLE TO A LIFE OF DEPENDENCY AND SUBSISTENCE-LEVEL POVERTY!

I'm sick of you liberals suggesting that conservatives aren't compassionate because we don't believe that more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more and more handouts are the "solution."

YOU HAVE TRIED THAT AND IT HASN'T WORKED!! Or has it worked, from the standpoint of your own political power?

There is only ONE thing that works...and that is this:

As a conservative:
1. I recognize you as a unique, gifted individual. There is no one in the world like you, and never will be. I will do everything in my power to help you discover the splendid idea that God had from the moment that you were conceived.

2. You, and ONLY YOU, can develop your gifts, and I DO RECOGNIZE that grinding poverty is the CHIEF OBSTACLE to this process. So, while you're on that journey of discovery and self-realization, I WILL WHOLE-HEARTEDLY support, encourage and assist you in any way I can, including financial support.

3. Layabouts, drifters, grifters, gangstas and criminals NEED NOT EXPECT MY SUPPORT. My support comes with one and only ONE string attached: You must be WORKING to improve your situation. Otherwise, from me you get bupkus.

4. ITEMS #1 THROUGH #3 APPLY EQUALLY REGARDLESS OF YOUR RACE, COLOR OR ETHNICITY.

This is the true conservative position regardless of whatever you might have heard to the contrary!

You know, before Obama I felt we had made great strides in race relations. I know for a fact that ROSA PARKS WOULD HAVE LOVED TO HAVE LIVED IN 2007 AMERICA.

But then came Obama, his disgusting spouse and their undisguised hatred of "white America" (you don't go back to Rev. Wright's church a second time if you're looking for anything other than "black-power" theology).

The damage - the incredible damage - that Obama has done to this nation may take generations to understand, and even more generations to overcome.

Sigh. Did you even read the testimony - of Senator Scott?

[ In Reply To ..]
Because it has absolutely nothing to do with all that stuff at all. It is merely his own experience. He is not asking anyone for anything, he is a Senator and doing fine.

He is just saying that even as a Senator, even doing well financially, even believing, as a conservative, in low taxes, no gay marriage, cut food stamps, small govt, etc etc etc, it still hasn't made one difference in the fact that the cops stop him multiple times merely for driving while black.

That's what this whole thread was supposed to be about. Not Trump, not what anybody thinks African Americans need to prove to them that they are worthy (really? by the way), not cars even.

Just read what he says and tell me that racism is not built into our institutions, most especially law enforcement. Or not.

I appreciate his honesty too, but I think racial tension and hatreds - are being deliberately stirred up

[ In Reply To ..]
by organized planning, not by him though.

I mean, Obama exacerbates the problem. I heard an interview on the radio by the step mom of Micah X (she's white by the way), and she said he was happy and loved this country until he got involved Black Lives Matter.

Since Obama we've gone from a melting pot to - salad bowl.
