Scott Walker cannot tell you what he believes on evolution

Posted: Feb 11, 2015

I guess Scott Walker needs to go back to college to earn that diploma he never bothered with . . . * * * Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) on Wednesday dodged a question about whether he believes in evolution. Speaking at the Chatham House foreign policy think tank London, Walker was asked: “Are you comfortable with the idea of evolution? Do you believe in it?” “For me, I am going to punt on that one as well,” he said. “That’s a question politicians shouldn’t be involved in one way or another. I am going to leave that up to you. If you watch the video of the exchange, note that the interviewer prefaces the question by saying the issue is of particular interest when posed to “senior Republicans when they come to London.” The subtle – or perhaps not so subtle – implication is that the British just don’t know what to make of GOP extremism in the 21st century. Indeed, after Walker refused to answer the question about whether he’s comfortable with modern biology, the interviewer, clearly taken aback by the governor’s reticence, responded with genuine incredulity. “Really?” he said when Walker “punted” on the issue. The interviewer quickly added, “Any British politician, right- or left-wing, would laugh [at the question] and say, ‘Of course evolution’s true.’”;

Please tell me why this is important. - HA

The topic was Walker or evolution or maybe even visit to Great Britain, possibly Great Britain's take on their "support" for a Republican possibly in 2016.

I answered the question of why this was important. Simple. No need to be defensive.

They should stop sticking their noses in politics that don't concern them. After all, they can't vote for anyone running for president of this country.

The guy was just trying to get a "gotcha" moment. Didn't work. It's none of their business.
Pure BS. He is just trying to establish international credibility... - sm

For a run for president. He did not want to show stupidity by denying evolution or anger his base so refused to answer. Jindal, same thing. England seems to be a good first stop for these candidates seeking the presidency, maybe because they speak English there? Romney did it too. All of them were an embarrassment. LOL!
If Scott Walker wants people of the United Kingdom to invest their capital in the State of Wisconsin - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
I'd say the Brits bloody well have a right to ask questions of the guy who is governing the state, who himself has crossed a very large body of water in order to seek their investment across the miles and "across the pond." There is really no credible dispute that economics and politics are not global affairs. If this were not so, why would Governor Walker venture into London, the United Kingdom, seeking investment in the State of Wisconsin, USA? Global economics depends on that kind of cooperation, and there's a reason the President of the United States is often referred to as "the leader of the free world." It should come as no surprise to the governor of a large state in the USA who has publicly stated that he is "seriously considering" running for POTUS that he might be asked political questions whenever and wherever he spoke, whether on foreign or domestic soil.

If somebody, anybody, wants me to invest money in their foreign interests, regardless of my eligibility to vote in their federal--or State of Wisconsin elections, for that matter--I'd say I have a right to ask them whatever I please when given the opportunity at a question and answer session....... even if it is just to see how the guy who is going to be handling my "investment" actually handles himself.

But maybe that's just me.

Delusional.... - Mary

Yes, let's just run on over to Iraq (and Syria, for that matter), and establish a permanent boots-on-the-ground occupation. I'm sure John McCain wouldn't mind being their fearless leader. Tell him to go ahead and lace up them boots and practice saying, "Here's Johnny." That's exactly what we need to ever hope for any modicum of peace in the Middle East. We'll just occupy the whole planet.

It is incredibly important because .... - Mary

If the president of the United States cannot think on his feet quickly enough to answer such a simple question, then there is a problem. (This was one of our worries regarding Sarah Palin.)I personally would not have a problem whether Scott Walker believes in either evolution or creationism, but I would certainly hope he would be able to think quickly enough to compose a response to a simple question from an interviewer. Wouldn't you?

Maybe he should just tell a lie like BO and then - go play golf

The polls are putting him in first place but until he states he is running for president, people shouldn't let their noses get all out of joint. He may not even run. You won't know until it's closer to June/July.

I don't care about what he thinks of reality shows, the weather, books, automobiles, sports, or anything else that is not important to the every day lives of people like me.

What I do care about is his policies that will affect me. So far I've heard good things about his political beliefs and voting records.

I will continue to follow his political beliefs. The rest of his personal life I don't care about.

Unfortunately Evolution, the Bible and religious - beliefs are being intertwined

daily with political beliefs.

Abortion - "rape produces child it is a beautifult thing"
Climate Change -- belief in real science
Same-Sex Marriage
10 commandments on the courthouse lawn
Refuse service to gays
Common core/biblical textbooks/religion in schools
ACA - birth control provision
prayer at City Council meeting

Still fighting with issue of actual prayer in school. Teacher actually requiring children to pray in school.

the list goes on and on. If Walker can't figure out the evolution issue, he is going to have a tough time with a stance in his party on the rest of this too.

"The easy answer is that evolution is a public policy issue. The foundation of modern microbiology and pathology, disbelief in evolution could lead to bad policy choices around disease control and other public health concerns. Likewise, evolution helps us understand biodiversity and helps us grasp what happens when we damage the stability of an ecosystem. Which is to say that a stance on evolution could also have consequences for environmental policy. And on the local level, what you think about evolution can matter for education policy: The standards you use, the textbooks you buy, and the school administrators you hire."http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/politics/2015/02/scott_walker_refuses_to_discuss_evolution_there_is_no_good_reason_to_ask.single.html

But, for me, his public thoughts on evolution have to do with how much of a religious crazy he is going to be. I already don't like his policies regarding education and he has apparently been caught "lying" several times. http://aattp.org/scott-walker-busted-lying-about-teacher-unions-teacher-of-the-year-smacks-him-down-in-open-letter/

Exactly what does not having a firm opinion of evolution have to do with being a decent presidential candidate? Really, you are are reaching aren't you?

In answer to your questions - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
It depends on perspective, actually. Wouldn't it be equally reaching to assume that simply reporting the latest news on Governor Walker constituted "digging" on the OP's part and that it was the worst the OP could come up with? Even a casual observer of politics is aware that Governor Walker is implicated in multiple counts of campaign corruption and that several of his aides have plead guilty and are now in prison for same. I believe his campaign is also on record stating that he held a 2.59 GPA at the time he dropped out of college, a C student with grades lower than our last Republican president, and I can only assume the Republican party is content with the "common man y'all want to have a beer with" narrative versus the "elitist educated snob." Even Mitt Romney was travelling the country insulting Obama for being a lawyer and his Harvard Law degree, while somehow failing to mention that he himself possessed 2 degrees from Harvard, including a degree from Harvard Law. Maybe it just slipped his mind, but it was a strange narrative coming from Romney. Rick Santorum is another GOP politician especially fond of that "education is indoctrination" narrative, and he has 3 college degrees so I guess he would know what he's talking about. At least with Scott Walker, the GOP would have a candidate that fit the narrative perfectly versus one who was "degreed up" while at the same time spewing political rhetoric against education.

It's probably just me, but I like my presidents educated. In these times of global unrest and talk of "boots on the ground" almost every day, the thought of an uneducated college dropout with a 2.59 GPA being the final decision maker on military issues is a bit unnerving to my mind. No foreign policy experience outside of telling the Brits he will punt on several queries during a question and answer segment is not my idea of great foreign leadership experience.

From a different perspective, the people who seem to live to loathe our current president comment almost daily in one form or another on conservative radio/television about President Obama being influenced by what they perceive to be his personal beliefs interjected into his political decisions. Who on this board has not heard the right-wing political attack media accusing the president of being a scheming diabolical Muslim working from the inside out in order to fundamentally transform America, all the while being an elitist educated intellectual who also happens to have a low IQ and is mentally incompetent. Obama is all things to the conservative media, whether completely devoid of any intelligence or a scheming diabolical genius, as the need arises, of course. Is there a right-wing XL pipeline supporter who would argue that Obama's belief in climate change has absolutely zero influence and no bearing whatsoever on his threatened impending veto of their first order of business of building Keystone?

If somebody Governor Walker's age did not have a firm opinion of evolution after having decades of time in which to form an opinion (particularly since he is the son of a Baptist preacher), then I would assume that he was either an imbecile incapable of making a decision or yet another politician trying to obfuscate the truth regarding his actual beliefs. Perspective matters. Since many Republican candidates routinely deny science in order to pander to the far right wing of their party, people are quite simply interested to know whether Governor Walker is yet another in a fairly long line of right-wing science deniers. Since politicians of our generation routinely make policy based on their beliefs (or lack thereof) regarding climate change, stem cell research, religion, content of school curriculum, just to name some of the more obvious hot button issues, people are naturally interested in the answers to these type questions.

If it is the GOP's position that a politician's religious and/or world views regarding science do not influence his political decision-making, someone forgot to notify the far right-wing faction of the Republican party.

I hope he get the nomination. It will be a romp! - nm
