A raise in the minimum wage will receive a $2800 cost of living adjustment on January 1, 2015.

Even $10/hr is pathetic. I would like to see them live on that. Americans favor raising the minimum wage, 71%.

So, come on, senators, how about you do what the people want for a change?

;

They will not do what the people 'want' - as long as they know

How many here have ever called or written either of their representatives in Congress?

They pay attention when we take real action; otherwise its pretty much business as usual.

This was a vote on cloture. - Truthhurts

[ In Reply To ..]
This was a vote on “cloture”, which means to end debate so that an up-or-down vote can be taken. A vote in favor is a vote to end debate and move to a vote on the issue itself, while a vote against is a vote to prolong debate or to filibuster.

Cloture is required to move past a Senate filibuster or the threat of a filibuster and takes a 3/5ths vote. In practice, most bills must pass cloture to move forward in the Senate. It has a 14% chance of being reintroduced and passed.

REID voted 'no' and he's not a Republican.

BTW, there's another bill out there S.1737. I haven't read it but I glanced at it and it seems identical to the one they voted on yesterday.

Reid only voted no so he could preserve the - ability to bring the vote up again

[ In Reply To ..]
This is what he has to do EVERY TIME the republicans block debate and vote on any issue, which is many, many times for many, many bills. Suh-prise, most of them that would help us poor peoples. Repubs don't even want to debate them or get on record as being against them because they love to bamboozle their trusting public.

"The stunning thing about this is that it was Senate Republicans who blocked the minimum wage increase, using the Senate's filibuster rules to block the Democratic legislation even though Republicans don't have a Senate majority. Once it became clear that no Republicans would join Democrats to supply the 60 votes needed to break the filibuster, Reid voted no on the cloture motion—but he did so in order to preserve his ability to bring up a vote again.

In other words, by voting no on cloture, Reid was actually voting in favor of increasing the minimum wage. It was a procedural vote he was forced to take because Republicans refused to move forward on the minimum wage, but according to the Americans for Prosperity Nevada chapter, Reid was voting against the minimum wage itself."

You want to make a bet they do the same thing to the other bill you mention?

Can you defend the republicans desire to do away with the minimum wage? Where do you think we will end up if that happens?

Republicans blocked the minimum wage bill - sm

[ In Reply To ..]
The Republicans blocked those working poor from being able to pay their bills.

You neglected to mention that the reason Harry Reid, senate majority leader, voted no is because of a senate rule that will then allow him to re-open this legislation for a future vote.

But with a 14% chance of it being re-introduced, not much chance. - Truthhurts

I'm going to do more than one post on this because of length. The first is a partial speech from Sen. Cornyn:

If Massachusetts or Minnesota or some other State wants to raise the minimum wage. That is their choice. ….. This is going to hurt low-wage earners who are currently employed. That is what the Congressional Budget Office has said which is the official scorecard for the Congress. And it is going to hurt the economy.

Think about this: Forget about your local conditions in North Dakota or in Texas. We are going to say, from Washington, DC, that everybody has to raise wages by 40 percent….

Again, this is not just public opinion, it is not just my opinion, it is not just the opinion of the Congressional Budget Office about the job-killing nature of this dramatic 40-percent increase proposed in the minimum wage….

Back in 1998, President Clinton's economic adviser Gene Sperling wrote a memo to President Clinton when a similar proposal was being made to raise the minimum wage 41 percent at that time. …So what did President Clinton do when his economic advisers said: Don't do it, Mr. President. While it is good politics, perhaps, it really will hurt the economy, and it will put people out of work. President Clinton, to his credit, decided not to pursue that particular 41-percent increase in the minimum wage.

I mention that as a sad contrast with the current situation where President Obama, seeing his favorability ratings at the lowest they have been since he became President, is trying to change the subject and basically make a political point when the fact is that making the political point will actually hurt a lot of hard-working Americans.

So the majority leader has decided that rather than spend the week debating legislation that would actually create jobs, we should spend it debating a proposal that would destroy jobs.

Actually, this is what most Republicans were saying in their speeches.

So, let me ask you, I don't care what those guys think - what do you think?

[ In Reply To ..]
About the minimum wage? That is a load of bunk what they said. Every single place they have upped the minimum wage, jobs were not lost, that is just garbage, just like giving tax breaks to the "job creators" is garbage.

It does NOT trickle down, never has, never will.

How do you feel about making minimum wage, or not much more than it as an MT, hmmm?

And 40%, really? That is NOT 40%. At the most it is 20-25% because most minimum wages are at least $8/hr, so where are they getting 40%?

Oh, I know they are fond of saying, well, why not raise it to $20/hr, and expound from there, but this is merely getting the minimum wage up to (barely) livable standards.

Forget about those guys, how do YOU feel about it? Since 71% of the American public is for a rise in the minimum wage, there have to be a few Republicans who don't believe what those overpaid gasbags tell them, right?

I lived okay on minimum wage. I didn't keep up with the Joneses. - Truthhurts

I worked on getting out of debt and once there, no only was the stress gone, but also I had more money in my pocket do spend. Heck, when I worked at a well known place in the office, I was making $2/hour LESS than what they were paying workers at McDonald's. I had taken a picture of the sign and posted it above my desk at work. I soon got a raise. LOL

I also think it should go by states. Not every state NEEDS that higher wage. There are states that have lower costs of living. There are states that have lower food costs thanks to being in a farming and/or meat producing areas.

And, yes, it IS 40% - $7.25 x 40%=$10.15.

Yet this 40% raise is less than the protesters want out there. They're calling for $15.

The majority of workers earning minimum wage are teens living with their parents, adults living alone, or second household earners. They work mostly in restaurants and as they gain skills, they move on. Focus on the people working there. Are they the same ones who were there two years ago? Probably not. Also, people who work in businesses that receive tips by customers would increase their wages by almost 240% according to the National Counsel on Chain Restaurants. According to them, this provision is included even though current law already requires employers to pay eligible employees the statutory wage rate in the uncommon instance that tipped income doesn't reach the starting wage rate (on a national level, the median hourly wage for tipped employees is $16-$22/hour). Finally, the proposal links future wage hikes to the consumer price index, injecting an unnecessary degree of uncertainty and volatility into labor cost calculations for chain restaurant businesses.

Chain restaurants are employers of opportunity in local communities around the country, whether it is a first job for individuals with limited work skills to long-term careers in managerial or ownership and it is a labor-intensive small establishment limiting job opportunities, so Congress should do what Sen. Cornyn advised -- advance policies for job growth and the nation's persistently high unemployment rate (including a teen unemployment rate of over 20 percent).

There are over 13.5 million employees in the restaurant and foodservice industry, the second-largest private employer in the United States. Their average pre-tax profit margins in the restaurant industry range from 4 to 6 percent and roughly 90 percent of the industry consists of small business owners, with only 1 out of 10 restaurants in the U.S. owned and operated by chain corporations.

Don’t forget…the CBO officially concluded that raising the federal minimum wage to $10.10 would result in 500,000 job losses. Moreover, that's a conservative estimate, as CBO recognized in its analysis that the job losses could be as high as 1 million.

So, to me, the argument against it is very clear. jobs will be lost. No ifs, ands, or buts. Food prices will definitely go up. If you don’t like paying $8 for a steak or $4 for hamburger, would you be happy paying double that price? I doubt it.

Lastly, let’s not forget that most of the working people are making more than minimum wage. In a rural area, a local tire repair and seller shop is paying $10/hour now. If the minimum was raised, he would have to raise his workers pay because they would grumble that they deserve more because of their skills. You would see a domino effect in businesses all over this country. Warehouses for big box stores are paying more than that. I believe it’s $12-$14 an hour (but not sure, just a “rumor” I heard from the Job Center).

The only solution is to create jobs. The way to create jobs is to tell Reid to stop killing the jobs bills that pass the House.

Letter from the American Farm Bureau Federation - Truthhurts

[ In Reply To ..]
This isn't the only letter I read and they all had good points as to why this bill shouldn't pass.

Re: American Farm Bureau Federation Opposition of S. 2223

U.S. Senate,
Washington DC.
DEAR SENATOR: For agricultural producers across America, remaining economically competitive on fruits, vegetables and other commodities that are labor intensive is a continual struggle. Particularly over the last few decades, the American market has seen tremendous increases in the importation of foreign-grown produce, especially from nations where labor costs are substantially lower than those in the United States. Nevertheless, hired labor (including contract labor) remains an important input to U.S. agricultural production, accounting for about 17 percent of variable production expenses and about 40 percent of such expenses for fruits, vegetables, and nursery products.

As the Congressional Budget Office recently confirmed, raising the minimum wage will be detrimental to job creation and low-skilled workers trying to get started on the economic ladder. As the minimum wage is increased, workers risk losing hours and employers will have more incentive to invest in technology rather than hiring the low-skilled worker. Additionally, in the agricultural sector, where margins are historically slim, any proposal that escalates labor costs can put growers in a precarious position. S. 2223, the Minimum Wage Fairness Act, proposes to increase the federal minimum wage by nearly 40 percent, making it even more difficult for growers to remain competitive. Growers will have to find more revenues or trim costs to make up the difference. The increased pressure from higher labor costs would only make it harder for farmers, particularly small- and medium-sized growers, to compete or even stay in business.

S. 2223 threatens the economic well-being of many agricultural producers in labor-intensive crops. Farm Bureau urges you to vote ``no'' on this bill when it is taken up on the Senate floor.

Sincerely,
Bob Stallman,
President.

Look up his statements on it. He promised to do it and he has. That is NOT working for the people. That is being politically partisan.

He really doesn't give one iota about the American people, nor does he care if they ever get back to work. If the bill or resolution isn't introduced by a Democrat or Obama, it's usually tabled.

Here's a thought - Laura

[ In Reply To ..]
For those who believe that raising the minimum wage is a win-win - lets say that suddenly the cost of your groceries is going to go up 41% - the amount that some want to raise the minimum wage - what would you do? Would you continue to buy the same groceries as always? Or would you have to cut back on groceries because you don't have the money to pay 41% more for groceries each month? Paying employees is the small business's "groceries" - they can't just stop paying people just as you can't stop buying some groceries - but you would probably have to stop spending as much on groceries (or cut back somewhere else) - which translates to the employer having to either lay off some of those employees or cutting back on their benefits. Minimum wage jobs are supposed to be an incentive for us to move on to something better - it's the same in our jobs where I will be moving on within the next 3 months to a better, higher-paying job.

Perfect analogy. - sm
