House Democrats hit boiling point over perceived lack of WH support

Posted: Jul 15, 2010

House Democrats are lashing out at the White House, venting long-suppressed anger over what they see as President Obama's lukewarm efforts to help them win reelection -- and accusing administration officials of undermining the party's chances of retaining the majority in November's midterm elections.

In recent weeks, a widespread belief has taken hold among Democratic House members that they have dutifully gone along with the White House on politically risky issues -- including the stimulus plan, the health-care overhaul and climate change -- without seeing much, if anything, in return. Many of them are angry that Obama has actively campaigned for Democratic Senate candidates but has done fewer events for House members.

The boiling point came Tuesday night during a closed-door meeting of House Democrats in the Capitol. Speaker Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) excoriated White House press secretary Robert Gibbs's public comments over the weekend that the House majority was in doubt and that it would take "strong campaigns by Democrats" to avert dramatic losses.

"What the hell do they think we've been doing the last 12 months? We're the ones who have been taking the tough votes," Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr. (N.J.) said in an interview Wednesday.

Attempting to quell the uprising, Obama met privately with House Democratic leaders Wednesday evening to reassure them of his support. Aides said the meeting went well and focused on the agenda in the run-up to the elections.

Maybe if they showed they cared about the people of the country - more than their life-long careers

in politics in Washington, I might have more respect for them. But passing bills the American citizens have said no to, and them showing they don't care about what happens to us, that the only thing they are interested in is staying in power.

I have not found one politician yet in either party (or even outside the dem and pub party) that have done anything to show they care about Americans, our lives, unemployment, rising taxes, etc.

I've just really had it with politics. Somebody please tell me of a good politician. Someone who really cares about the people in the area they come from. All these politicians campaign that they care so much about the people in their area, they are going to go to WA and change it and make it better for us, and our voice will be heard, blah, blah, blah. Then they get elected and it seems like they have instant memory loss and then only serve themselves.

Pass this bill and then we'll tell you what's in it, or pass this bill and then I can change it. Then when nothing seems to be working all of a sudden they bring religion into the deal that it's what God would want, and false prophets are telling you lies, etc, etc.

As far as I'm concerned if people don't get re-elected they have nobody to blame but themselves. I think America is tired of it all. We've been lied to for so long and everyone seems to be getting sick of it. The worst thing is it's as though they are saying to the people "yeah, we're lying to you, what are you gonna do about it, we have the power" - As far as I'm concerned both parties lie and right now there is nobody I trust to tell the truth. It's not just one party, it's all of them.

I think only those that stay in the dark; i.e., oblivious to politics - Backwards Typist

and backstabbing politicians are okay with what's going on. They don't have a care in the world except that their party gets back in.

You said, "Somebody please tell me of a good politician." I was going to ask YOU that same question. LOL

Here's someone to check out. - more than their life-long careers (anonymoose)

I'm going to check out this guy more, but heard him interviewed today and I liked what he talked about. Also Martin Luther King's niece was interviewed. Was a very good interview with the both of them, but I think this man is worth checking out.

I know one. Former Houston Mayor Bill White who is tryng to - unseat the village idiot in TX gov race.

A politician, and a good one at that, to be sure, but an outstanding and caring human being. He is a man of personal wealth who seems to have strong connections to folks from all classes. I believe his HIV-positive gay brother who passed away a few years back had something to do with that.

He is a great and honest politician - sm

because his gay brother died of AIDS? That's one I've never heard before.

So because his brother was gay you are assuming he will be more sympathetic to the gay community? Even if that is true....that doesn't mean he is an honest politician....nor does it mean he would be a good politician. You are gonna have to bring more to the table on his behalf than his dead gay brother....sorry.
That is not what I said, it is what you heard. - sm

Before "bringing more to the table" on his brother's behalf, I should say that that I don't have to assume anything about Mayor Bill, whose record speaks for itself. As a dark horse candidate who appeared from out of nowhere, he received 63 percent of the votes his first term. He would be the first to tell you he is not a very "glamorous" candidate, but I attribute his initial popularity to his calm demeanor, winning ear-to-ear smile and keen intellect.

When he came up for re-election in 2005, he received an astonishing 91% of the vote. In fact, the election pretty much slipped by all of us that year because we were busy feeding, clothing, housing (both short term and long term), and employing more than 100,000 Hurricane Katrina refugees. The OP asked if anyone knew of a politician who cared about the people in the area they come from. Mayor Bill came to mind immediately.

Stuff like hurricanes and oil spills tend to unite Gulf Coast residents culturally, especially in times of disaster. When the need arose, Mayor Bill DID NOT BLINK AN EYE when he opened the city to welcome them here. He showed amazing strength of character and a confident can-do approach by simply rolling up his sleeves and doing what needed to be done. With few exceptions, Houston residents proudly followed his lead. For his efforts, he was awarded the JFK Profile in Courage award.

Like all politicians, there were a couple of things he did along the way that some did not support. Despite that, he was endorsed by 86% of the vote against 2 other contenders for a third term. To his credit, the mayor who succeeded him did not change a single thing he did while in office.

His legacy includes such things as the Metro Light Rail system and an educational summit that successfully aimed at reducing high school drop-out and increasing graduation rates Several of his initiatives resulted in reduced numbers of car accidents. When existing hurricane evacuation procedures went awry during when Hurricane Rita, he revamped the evacuation plan, which proved to be quite effective when Hurricane Ike hit Houston. Though we had some issues with the power companies, his leadership during the cleanup after Hurricane Ike as beyond reproach.

He lowered property taxes twice between 2006 and 2009 along with the crime rate. He instituted major recycling initiatives and improved the drainage and sewages systems, reduced flooding, enforced air pollution standards and initiated renewable energy and conservation programs. He formed public and private partnerships that cleaned up and fostered growth in previously neglected communities. He spearheaded fitness programs (he himself being an avid cyclist who leads the bicycle marathon every year). He started 8 different infrastructure programs without raising taxes, including a monumental undertaking of enlarging and upgrading Houston's freeway system (IMO, the best one I have ever seen).

The contributions I personally appreciate the most are the beautification programs along freeways and streets (green projects that planted tons of trees and flowers) and the establishment of the Discovery Green Park downtown that hosts all kinds of free classes, meetings and entertainment events. He cleaned up the Houston Bureau of Animal Regulation and Care to address abuse and neglect problems.

Mayor Bill enjoyed himself immensely when attending or participating (unannounced) in large public events. I have seen him at the Chevron runner's marathon, Heights biking marathon, numerous events at Discovery Green, the art car parade, the zoo, opera and at the museum. But (in Mitch McConnell's words) he "found his groove" and positively beamed every time he rode or marched in the Gay Pride Parade, a popular event Houston's gay community has held since 1979.

I mentioned his brother for one simple reason. The two brothers reached their young adulthood right around the same time that the women's lib, gay lib and civil rights movements were beginning. Mayor Bill spoke often about how close he was to his brother. The gay lib movement was tumultuous and painful for gays and their families, who often were subjected to the same mindless discrimination of all minority groups.

I know this because my own brother was gay and we came up during the same years. I learned my lessons early about the ties that bind women, gays, blacks, ethnic and all minorities who suffer the humiliation of ignorance, bigotry and mindless hatred. I understand the struggles a family goes through when one of its members comes out of the closet, first between themselves, then out in the community. My brother drank himself to death before he reached his 30th birthday. Sorry, but I have always believed it was the bigotry that killed him. My niece is nearing the advanced stages of HIV from heterosexual contact...another group who was on the receiving end of discrimination for decades.

When Mayor Bill did what he did after Katrina, it was not for the sake of politics or recognition. It was an act of compassion toward a group of displaced, disadvantaged victims of a cruel twist of fate. I believe his relationship to his brother within the context I have just described gave him the capacity to do that act of kindness without a second thought. If you somehow find this offensive, I can assure you that is not my intent. I am just stating an opinion based on first-hand life experience. Feel free to bash to your heart's content.

Gay Pride Parade. Scroll halfway down for photo of Mayor Bill.

I was not bashing at all. I merely wanted - sm

more information on the man than just his brother being gay. You have provided that information and I thank you.

Just one side comment though...you say that minorities are often discriminated against and I do agree. But my question is this....why then do some minorities turn around and discriminate? This is something I've never understood. Discrimination itself is a horrible thing but when you have suffered from discrimination, why turn around and do the same thing to other groups? I know this is off of the subject but it is something that truly bothers me.
Maybe for the same reasons that Holocaust victims - turned around and

established a Homeland that occupies and attempts to drive an entire population of people into extinction, which I find equally as troublesome.

Boehner's Support For His Plan B Collapses, So Closes House For Holidays And Leaves,Dec 21, 2012
After the tea partiers who said they were behind him on his Plan B in the morning backed out later in the day, Speaker Boehner closed the House for the holidays. This all happened so fast they were literally wheeling in carts of food for a late night of lawmaking work when the House abruptly adjourned and they all walked out without voting on their own measure. He must be bitterly disappointed. As someone said, "Every time this guy takes a foot forward, he gets slammed in the back of the head ...

House Democrats Send Wrong SignalNov 21, 2010
I think Pelosi's ego needs some downgrading. Our country does not need "me-me" politicians.  We need to watch them closely (and I'm not just talking about Pelosi-even though I can't stand her) but this article shows how much she doesn't care for protocol or the rules.   When the rules of the House of Representatives forced the Democrats to confront a painful choice among their leaders, they did what Democrats are often inclined to do. They changed the ru ...
