Budget (or lack of)

Posted: Aug 11, 2012

Question for liberals - if Obama is such a wonderful president and manager, can anyone tell me why he has not had a budget in 3-1/2 years?  He is such a dismal failure.   Having a hard time admitting it, I guess.  The Romney/Ryan 2012 ticket is now the ticket of hope.  I have more hope today than I've had in a long while.

Question for cons... - unless you are very wealthy

what makes you think a R&R ticket is going to do anything for you except urinate on your head and tell you it's raining? All of us who are middle class should be very afraid if this "dream team" takes power.

Neither party has done much - Trigger Happy

for the middle class and I'd hazard a guess to say that quite a few who used to be middle class have since dropped to a lower class during this administration. I don't know if the R&R ticket will give us the answers we need to bring the economy back, but I do know it won't get better with 4 more years of Obama and Joe.

Unless you are very wealthy - sm

I'm already tired of O&B urinating on our heads and telling us it's raining. I'd like a change from that.

All of us who are middle/low income class should be very afraid of this "god team" they think they are. When you are living through hell why in the world would you want to remain there.

Now, I agree with Trigger Happy. Neither party ever do much for the middle class. I am one of the middle class, though I used to do better under a republican president. But since yours truly came into office over half my family has lost their jobs.

I don't think R&R have ALL the answers. Nobody does, but they will do a better job that O&B. Their experience and knowledge gives me and many other Americans hope for a change. A change to a better economy, better foreign relations, better cabinet members, no more tax cheats in charge, etc., etc, etc. One thing we do know for sure is it won't get better with O&B. The last 3 years have proven that.

Urinate on our heads and tell us it's raining??? - Really? No, REALLY????

Hard to believe any adult who claims they are interested in politics or knows what is going on in politics, who the candidates are, what they done in their careers (or haven't done), would actually say a politician is going to "urinate on your head and tell you it's raining".

It's call the party of obstruction. Pubs have done everything in their power since Obama's first day to make sure that nothing gets done including philibusters, red herrings, poison pills..etc. So, what about the budget? Surely you would think they wouldn't obstruct that....wrong. That is exactly what is going on. The result? Sequestration.

What is sequestration?

If Congress cannot reach a deal to reduce the deficit by the end of the year, a “sequester” will trigger $1.2 trillion in automatic spending cuts evenly split between defense and non-defense spending. Democrats and Republicans in Congress created this mechanism in order to pressure its members to reach a compromise on deficit-reduction. The potential defense cuts, which passed Congress with a majority of Republican support in both the House and the Senate, will only go into effect if Congress cannot agree on a deficit deal.

Why is this plan in place?

After House Republicans refused to support President Obama’s deficit-reduction proposal—a compromise that could have cut the deficit by $4 trillion over ten years—Congress had to find a way to address our country’s rising levels of debt from two wars, the Bush tax cuts, and the effects of the worst recession since the Great Depression. To reach a long-term deal, Democrats and Republicans in Congress reached an agreement with President Obama: $1 trillion in spending cuts and a pledge to reduce the deficit by an additional $1 trillion. Congress established the threat of sequestration as an enforcement mechanism: the automatic and indiscriminate spending cuts were designed to be so damaging that Congress would have no choice but to reach a deficit-reduction deal in order to prevent their implementation.

What are the consequences of the sequester for national security?

Congressional Republicans are risking serious consequences in order to launch a political attack. President Obama understands that the effects of such massive spending cuts would undermine our national security. The reductions would indiscriminately slash the Pentagon’s funding by nearly 20% over the next decade, threatening to undermine America’s military. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta noted that sequestration would drastically shrink the military and diminish its ability to keep us safe.

What is President Obama’s plan to avoid these cuts?

President Obama made it very clear that Congress “can and must act to avoid the sweeping impacts of the sequester” and provided several blueprints for balanced deficit reduction to avoid these cuts. His deficit reduction package, for example, offered more than $4 trillion in deficit reduction while making sure we continue to invest in education, job creation, and long-term economic growth. The package “would achieve more than enough deficit reduction to avoid the sequester,” and would provide our military the support they need to keep America safe. Fiscal commission co-chairs Erksine Bowles and Alan Simpson both called the President’s plan “a balanced, comprehensive approach to deficit reduction.” But Republican leaders “walked away from negotiations” because they refused to accept any revenue increases.

Does Mitt Romney have a plan that would prevent these cuts?

No. Romney has refused to support any proposal that would include additional government revenue, saying “I don’t believe that raising revenues is the right answer to balancing our budget.” He even backed Congressional Republicans who refused to raise revenue as part of a deal to avoid government default. Romney said that he didn’t want Congress to take any actions that might prevent these cuts before inauguration day in January 2013, even though the country faces looming defense cuts.

Why hasn’t Congress voted to pass a solution yet?

Republicans in Congress have apparently decided to stall legislation and “put off striking deals on major legislative issues” like deficit reduction in hopes that Romney wins the White House. Republican leader Rep. Jim Jordan even said that some Republicans were willing to see major fiscal decisions postponed until next year, because they are bullish about Mr. Romney winning.

In fact, with buy-in from the Romney campaign, Congressional Republicans have laid out month-long plans “in painstaking detail” that attack the President on defense cuts rather than attempting to find a solution. As Politico notes, “the main goal” of these attacks is “to boost the party’s prospects on Election Day.”

that even democrats wouldn't vote for Obama's proposed budget? As for the party of obstruction, what happened to things that the house has passed that Harry Reid won't even put on the table for the senate to vote on?

Yep...that's the point...sm - JTBB

[ In Reply To ..]
You can't pass a budget in the senate unless you have 60 votes, and you can't get 60 votes without some republican support. Do the math.

As far as things that have passed the house and Ried stopping it? Ask Mitch how many times they've tacked on an ammendment for either anti-abortion or to repeal Obamacare, etc. Those are called poison pills. It stops a bill dead in its tracks so nobody can vote on it. If not that, it's a filibuster.

Remember that promising bill that recently came up about cybersecurity? Killed with anti-abortion amendments.

Remember the bring jobs home bill? Killed by an ammendment to repeal Obamacare. And the list goes on.

Republicans are simply acting like little children in washington. If I can't play the way I want to play, I'll take my toys and go home. Meanwhile, the country suffers while they pout until they get their way.

I live in TN, and unfortunately my senators are republican. I personally would like to get my money back for services not rendered.
So democrats NEVER - sm
[ In Reply To ..]
add anything to bills that cause that particular bill to be DOA? I find it ridiculous that so many of you scream and pitch a fit about one party doing something and completely ignoring the other party doing it.

As for needing republican votes...the dems had total control of congress from 2006 to 2008 and then had total control of congress and had a dem president until 2010...they didn't need any republicans vote then...THEY HAD THE MAJORITY!!!
Nope...I'm not saying dems never do it...sm - JTBB
[ In Reply To ..]
These tactics have been used for years by both sides. However, the dems have never used it in an orchestrated manner so as to essentially shut down the government. Right now we need farm bills due to the droughts, a budget, cybersecurity, a bring jobs home bill, etc, etc....but the republican party is consistently blocking these bills one by one.

Please see above discussion about the "total control congress."

when you keep throwing out the juvenile "nickname" of Obozo for the President of our United States.

If you love and respect this country as I have no doubt the Republicans do (or claim to), then I believe that you should still have respect for the person who holds the office. As much as I disliked George Bush, I never, ever, EVER referred to him by any of the disrespectful nicknames that people coined during his presidency (at least not in public discussion or even on an anonymous message board); but then, I'm a thoughtful contributor to political discussion, and I'm mindful of the fact respecting the President of the United States still holds meaning to me.
I'm crushed. So from now on, I shall call him "our esteemed President." - Aunt Sue
