GOP senator blocks unemployment benefits extension:

Disconnect - NJ

[ In Reply To ..]
There is a real disconnect between this guy and middle America. We've seen newspaper stories covering middle American job losses for at least 2 years now. Bunning doesn't care.

NJ

I have felt there is a lot of selfishness in politicians - but this guy is beyond that

[ In Reply To ..]
He clearly just does not care~poor baby had to miss his game when the benefits of so many Americans are at stake. Another case of "it is all about me" mentality. Takes selfishness and childishness to a new level. Yet other repubs are depending him?? Wonder what the reaction would have been from these same people if the jack*** senator involved had been a Democrat? Not saying that said senator would not deserve anything he/she got because this is just reprehensivle. Just saying that I am amazed that repub members of Senate can support crap like this, even from their own party!!

All Bunning wants is for us to decide where we will get the money to pay for this. - Anon

When someone with a name actually comes forward to vouch for this "story," then maybe I'll believe it. Otherwise, if we start besmirching people's reputations with gossip and innuendo, I'm sure the right can come up with a whole lot of comments someone heard Obama make.
And thank you for proving my point. Selfish - and supporting the people

Sen. Bunning wants the majority to figure out how to pay for this legislation, which the majority voted they would do several weeks ago on any future legislation. Obama said it himself last year: WE'RE BROKE! So if you want any new programs, you have to get the money for it from an existing one. So which one? And why is that so hard for some of you on here to understand?
They dont understand because liberals always do this. - Spend, spend, ignorantly spend.

but have no idea how to pay for anything, just leave it for your grandchildren. My husband is on unemployment. It is about to end, but we understand and were grateful to have it for a time. I am so sick of the hypocrites on the left... and hey, spend all the money you want as long as its someone else's money. Grow up, lefties. Take a training class on common sense.

Kind of sounds like a diet my mom tried when I was growing up called "Fight fat with fat". She ate nothing healthy and dined on cake and cookies, sodas & pies, and everything that got her that way in the first place. After 2 weeks of only gaining weight she learned. Unfortunately this administration is not learning.

You have got to stop blaming the past president at some point. Yes, he inherited a debt, but you don't keep going down the same path adding to the damage, but getting approval for it now just because he's a democrat.

You were not okay with the rising deficit, the war, the Patriot Act, John Ashcroft and his Nazi squad, and all the other things when we had a republican president in, but now because we have a democrat President you give full 100% approval rating for him doing the same exact things Bush was doing. You are okay with the deficit continuing to rise, you are okay with him continuing on a war, you are okay with the confirmation of the Patriot Act, etc, etc. All because he is a democrat.

Congress has failed the American people. I cannot remember the last time we had a candidate that actually kept his campaign promises. I can't remember the last president who care about the American people (really cared), and not used them for some campaign gimick just so he would be elected. Why they put McCain in there I have no idea. He lost the last time, what made them believe that the people would pick him this time. Unless this was all planned out ahead of time. The death kiss was putting Palin in with him. Makes one believe that the presidency was already picked a long time before the voters voted. All I know is one day I hope to see a competent person in that job. The highest job in the country and they put in a community volunteer who has no experience in working anything close to what the person in the office is suppose to be doing, but for many many years (before I was even born), it's the players behind the curtains that really run the show. One thing I am glad for is that he has a pleasant sounding voice, so when he does give a speech (that was written for him), his voice does not grate on my nerves. Now if he would only tell us the truth it would be even better.

Anyway....you cannot continue to spend and think it's going to get us out of debt. On top of that they are not spending on things that create jobs or better America. They are spending on things and giving money to the groups that will help them get re-elected.
Run down house - NJ
[ In Reply To ..]
I think you do have to spend to correct the problem. It's like living in a house and spending all your money on toys instead of upkeep. Eventually, you have to put money into upkeep or the house falls down around your ears. If it's been too long since money has gone into upkeep, it's an expensive proposition, but the alternative is to let it fall down.

Right now, we are at the point of having to pour money into repair. When we're done, we'll have a house to be proud of, somewhere we'd like to live. And it will have regained it's fair market value instead of being a dump worth nothing.

Spending to correct the problem is one thing. Spending on project that are only good for getting them re-elected is not. Half the stuff they are spending money on is not creating jobs for people, and the phony-baloney lies they tell us like, such-n-such a group (which benefits their district) is getting 1+ million dollars and it will create jobs, when it has not created jobs, but gone into the pockets of politicians I'm sorry but that is just not right. Wall street and big corporations are continuing to get rich. You know, those same evil corporations that were getting rich under Bush, but now it's okay that they are still getting rich under Obama, because after all, he's a democrat. Those same "nasty" CEOs that were getting million dollar bonuses under Bush and everyone was ready to march up to their houses and drag them out and hang them, well those same CEOs are still giving themselves million dollar bonuses under Obama, but that's okay now. Right? How about the insurance companies everyone is screaming about. Well they will still continue to profit under the proposed health care plan of Obama's. That is why they are in support of it.

Spending money on small business so that they can hire people, and spending money to create jobs is one thing. Spending money on pet projects that don't create jobs but only line the pockets of the politicians (you scratch my back and I'll scratch yours) type of deals do nothing but destroy the country even more.

The worst thing however that is destroying the country is their constant lies to the American people. America has lost faith in our congress.

As for repair of the house. The white house and all the politicians houses are in excellent repair. But hey, I do hear that our tax money is being used to refurnish politician's guest houses.
I for one am no okay with the corporations and - their free ride, no matter who

is in office. It has been going on for too long. At least Obama has been trying to put pressure on them to change their ways after going back to business as usual after receiving their corporate welfare money. I am hoping that some changes are made in the system to force some changes in how the banking system does business, and in campaign finance reform, in spite of the recent decision of the Supreme Court-I am still furious about that.

If the jobs bill was going into politicians' pockets, you'd have a legitimate gripe. But it's not, so you don't.

Did you know that some bailout money was already paid back with interest amounting to about 15% annually? In other words, the American public made money on that bailout money. Some was paid off quickly to avoid the rules about bonuses. Those companies didn't like working under the rules that capped the big bonuses. Imagine the outcry from the right if we demanded caps still be in place after the government money was repaid...I can hear the screams of "socialism!" now.

But back to my subject line...what government money is going into politicians' pockets and not creating jobs? Specifics will help us get those crooks out of office while vague accusations just weaken the arguement.

Or the $1000 lawnmower bought with stimulus money in Arkansas that decided to "hire" people....because 50 jobs were saved or created because of that lawnmower!

Or the 18 million that was "paid" to create the website to track the money....a website that already existed but needed millions more to upgrade....and then couldn't account for billions of dollars of stimulus money. Now my son-in-law designs websites so I know they make big bucks....but 18 million??!!?

You must have rocks in your head if you don't think that money has disappeared into the pockets of the assorted crooks and cronies that surround this administration. They are from Chicago, you know.

Too bad you don't understand that for people to not receive their unemployment will only make the economy worse as a whole, let alone the person being put off because of one man's temper tantrum. To deny unemployment will only make things worse. Why is that so hard to understand? Besides, and I fully expect to get bashed for this, but sometimes people's survival is more important than money.

Are you aware that after state benefits run out, you are eligible for federal ones.....for up to 73 weeks!!!!

I know a man and his wife, both engineers, who are EACH drawing $500 a week on unemployment, plus get $700 per month as a COBRA subsidy. This has been going on for over a year. They are entitled to it, of course, but my goodness, they are hardly destitute!

And I'm sure they are not the only ones out there like that. My point is not everyone is living at poverty level on unemployment, and yet you want our country to continue to dole out money THAT WE DON'T HAVE (meaning we have to BORROW IT!) to pay for a program that may or may not be helping our country in general over the long run!

And all Bunning is trying to do is be responsible - which is what the Democrats, with great fanfare a few weeks ago, decided would be the "law of the land" - and actually pay for each program or bill as we go....not continue to BORROW on the backs of our children and grandchildren!

Yet, Bunning is the bad guy here....sheesh! It's hopeless!

The 85 billion BIPARTISAN bill would have taken care of this but Reid scrapped it. The unemployment extension was fully paid for, yet Reid's smaller PARTISAN bill that passed didn't provide for unemployment which is why we needed this new legislation with unemployment NOT paid for....yet you're mad at Bunning!

Now if he truly only cared about the game, he would have ignored his convictions about abiding by the Dems own PAY-GO rules and voted Aye just to get to go watch the game...

So did you mean for that link to totally decimate your own argument...or am I missing something here?
Link was posted to dispute your "floor staff" doubts. - As to the rest of your post....
[ In Reply To ..]
You need to post a link backing up yur claim that unemployment benefits were "fully paid for" under the original 85 billion GOP pork barrel, 31 billion of which would have gone for tax extenders for corporate lobbyists. If they can't find 10 billion to fund unemployment benefits extension, what makes you think they can find 31 billion for greedy corporations? Makes no sense whatsoever. This clearly shows GOP priorities. They could care less about jobs creation.

It would stand to reason that if it were "fully paid for" in the original version, then it would have been "fully paid for" in the slashed version.

But wait. Bunning, the guy who you are defending, says they are not paid for. Which is it? What happened to the disappearing funding for unemployed benefits?

More confusing is your reference to new legislation where it is not paid for. What in the world are you talking about?

Confusion, absence of logic and incoherence decimate absolutey nothing. The guy whined about his precious game. You tried to dispute it. I posted a link to show you how he did this in front of a microphone in Senate chambers....not easedropping "floor staff."

Other than that, you are the only one trying to argue points, and so far, not doing a very good job of it.
Can you even read???? The comment overhead by floor staff, as reported by Politico, is: - Anon

"In a colloquy with Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), Sen. Jeff Merkley, a freshman Democrat from Oregon, was pleading for Bunning to drop his objection, when the Kentucky Republican got fed up. âTough sât,â Bunning said as he was seated in the back row, overheard by the floor staff and others in attendance."

That was the link Nikki posted, and that's what I was referring to! Your stupid 9 minute video link had nothing to do with my original comment about the floor staff remark, but it did show Bunning's speech in its entirety which showed he was doing his JOB as a Senator by objecting to this jobs bill.

My state has come to the decision that they must raise taxes. Nobody likes it, but I heard a really stupid comment. One pub lawmaker here, who is against raising taxes to fund things like schools, stated "everyone needs to suffer some, and the people haven't suffered enough yet." WTF?

Earth to political dude ~ of course you haven't suffered. I'm sure your kids are doing quite well in their private schools, but hello, have you been to a public school lately? When a teacher has 35 kids in his/her classroom and half of them don't speak English, how are they supposed to teach? These kids who aren't learning anything are the future leaders of America.

None of these people whom we elect ever have to try and make the mortgage payment on unemployment. None of them have to worry about if they can afford to go to a doctor or not. None of them have stood in line at a food bank, etc, etc.

I'm not a political person, but any idiot should have seen this coming 5-6 years ago. I have to ask, how many of YOU are better off than you were 10 years ago? Did you really think that these wars that we were dragged into wouldn't end up biting us in the butt money wise? Did you think that the government rebate checks would keep coming w/o you having to pay for them? LOL Fools.

Ummm...he voted YES on the previous - unemployment extension.
