Republican-led House blocks Obama immigration plan

Posted: Dec 4, 2014

Washington (AFP) - In a symbolic rebuke to US President Barack Obama's unilateral action on immigration, the Republican-led House of Representatives voted Thursday to block his plan to shield millions of people from deportation.

The bill, which passed 219-197 along party lines, was introduced by conservatives furious with what they consider Obama's abuse of power when he announced his executive order last month.

But it is unlikely to reach the floor of the Senate, where Obama's Democrats remain in control through the end of the year before a Republican majority takes over in January.

The White House has also threatened a veto.

Keep fighting, Republicans.  Obama is quite aware that the majority in this nation oppose his stinking "amnesty" plan.

when you say "NOW the Republicans WANT MORE immigration" What do you mean by that?

Maybe you should read the article again? Republicans are BLOCKING the AMNESTY EO that Obama made... IOW, no legalizing of illegal criminals - those that broke the law to get here.

BTW, the Republican House passed some immigration bills before they went on vacay and, as usual, they're sitting on Harry's desk.

Can you give your source for your statement....sm - Rosie

Obama Defends Plan To Act On Immigration: CBS InterviewNov 10, 2014
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama defended his plan to use executive powers to implement some immigration reforms, saying in an interview broadcast on Sunday he had waited long enough for Congress to act.  Obama told congressional leaders on Friday he would try to ease some restrictions on undocumented immigrants, despite warnings from Republican leaders that such actions would "poison the well" or would be "a red flag in front of a bull." "Everybody agrees the immigration ...

Aw! Appeals Court Upholds Injunction On Obama's Immigration PlanNov 10, 2015
Guess somebody's pretty upset over it. Too bad. I hope the Supreme Court also upholds it, but I'm tired of Obama trying to change laws. He has no right to make law, change the law, or to pick and choose which laws to enforce, jsut like the the former AG had done.  Hopefully, he won't challenge it but I don't think his ego will just let it go. ______________________________ President Barack Obama's executive action to shield millions of undocumented immigrant ...

White House Criticizes Ruling On Obama's Immigration ActionApr 09, 2015
A federal judge has wrongly prevented "common-sense policies" from taking effect by blocking President Barack Obama's executive action that seeks to shield millions of immigrants from deportation, and the federal government plans to continue its fight in a higher court, the White House said Wednesday. White House spokesman Josh Earnest said the policies are in the best interest of the economy and supported by businesses, faith leaders and local law enforcement across the country, "includ ...

House Leaders Plan Separate House VoteMar 20, 2010
Democrats edged closer to finding 216 lawmakers to back a landmark health-care bill Saturday, as party leaders and White House officials were working on an executive order that they hope will win over a substantial number of antiabortion Democrats. The House Rules Committee continued its session on the third floor of the Capitol, where the panel is tasked with setting the terms of Sunday's floor debate. House leaders have decided to take a separate vote on the Senate version of the healt ...

Reaction To The President's Immigration PlanNov 21, 2014
"The president's decision is not a political victory. It's a victory for families. We know well that this decision is not a permanent solution. It is a first step. If we had it our way, President Obama would be signing a comprehensive immigration bill into law instead of an executive action, but can't sit idly by waiting for Republicans to act while homes are being broken up all across this nation." — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. House Bill Would Restore Respect For Immigration Law And The Constitutional ProcessJan 08, 2015
The Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR) applauds the introduction of Repeal Executive Amnesty Act of 2015, a bill that would not only defund the president's unconstitutional amnesty, but would block further attempts by this or future administrations to rewrite immigration laws through executive memos. House Republican Budget 2015Mar 17, 2015
I have linked to the Fox story, lest conservatives refuse to read. Even Fox seem a little flabbergasted by it. To wit: "House Budget Committee Chairman Tom Price’s $3.8 trillion plan borrows heavily from prior GOP budgets, including a plan that would transform Medicare into a voucher-like "premium support" program for seniors joining Medicare in 2024 or later. They would receive a subsidy to purchase health insurance on the private market. Meanwhile, Republicans are proposing using ...

Boehner's Support For His Plan B Collapses, So Closes House For Holidays And Leaves,Dec 21, 2012
After the tea partiers who said they were behind him on his Plan B in the morning backed out later in the day, Speaker Boehner closed the House for the holidays. This all happened so fast they were literally wheeling in carts of food for a late night of lawmaking work when the House abruptly adjourned and they all walked out without voting on their own measure. He must be bitterly disappointed. As someone said, "Every time this guy takes a foot forward, he gets slammed in the back of the head ...

Those changes would benefit virtually every taxpayer, but they also would reduce federal tax collections by about $4.5 trillion over the next decade, according to the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center. Republicans have declined to identify their targets. However, some ...

Obama's Moment On ImmigrationNov 07, 2014

President Barack Obama renewed his push for comprehensive immigration reform Tuesday, citing America's legacy as a nation of immigrants and saying that finding a solution for millions of undocumented workers is critical to the country's common future. Obama's Incoherent Immigration SpeechNov 22, 2014
By Ramesh Ponnuru "I count three ways President Barack Obama's speech on immigration last night contradicted itself. First, there was the absolutist language he used to justify his policy -- coupled with restrictions that aren't compatible with such language. The argument Obama made for his policy of offering legal status to millions of illegal immigrants was highly moralistic: We're not supposed to rip apart families, we can't deny people "a chance to make amends" and ...

Republicans Mull Response To Obama On ImmigrationNov 15, 2014
WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republicans debated Friday how to respond to President Barack Obama's expected executive action on immigration, with GOP leaders anxious to craft a solution that satisfies the demands of their most conservative members without courting a government shutdown. Another option would be to pass a temporary spending bill into next year when the GOP will control the Senate, to try to see if Republicans can use their grip on the purse strings to gain leverage over the ...

Obama: GOP 'nativists' Blocking Immigration ReformDec 29, 2014
