Food stamp usages plummets in Georgia.
Posted: Jun 24, 2017
decrease in the number of people receiving food stamps as the improving economy lifts many recipients into new jobs and frees them from the fear of going hungry.
The number of Georgians getting food stamps has dropped by 300,000 from 1.9 million in April 2013 to 1.6 million. That decrease of 16 percent in the federally funded program saves taxpayers tens of millions of dollars monthly.
That may sound great, but it’s also fueling a passionate debate about which people should get food stamps and for how long. Here in Georgia, unemployment has dropped to pre-recession levels. But Georgia’s food stamp program, despite the decrease, would have to lose another 692,115 people to reach its 2007 level of participation.
The fact that food stamp use has remained relatively high, while the economy has largely rebounded from the recession, makes some believe that many food stamp recipients are taking advantage of the system.;
That the way to cut entitlements, not by arbitrary cuts to people - in need but by fixing the economy

by getting rid of regulations on businesses so the entitlements aren’t needed!!!
There are legitimate cases where public assistance is needed. Too bad there isn’t a way to sort the cheats from the needy. Because the cheats are stealing from the needy and, of course, the taxpayers.
I guess it boils down to self regulation, self respect, and integrity which are lacking these days.

Moving the bar and removing people from food stamps does not prove a better economy.
The number of able bodies food stamp recipients and without - children has dropped. Your headline is

This article says nothing about mentally disturbed and - physically disabled. Georgia has

many able bodied people who don't even look for work, so they were given an ultimatum.
So getting off the gravy train now becomes starving people.
I guess this is what the welfare state does to people.

Now we have more single moms than ever, many of whom do need assistance. I do not begrudge that, but until the root of the problem is addressed it will just get worse.
Here's my 2 cents... as a hardworking MT, single mother of 2, and food stamp recipient in North - Former NTS MLS
[ In Reply To ..]
1) In 2007, I worked for a large local group of doctors as an MT, an employee, paid a very fair wage with very good benefits. I was, as I am now, a single mother of 2 working as an MT. I was not a food stamp recipient.
2) In the fall of 2008, I was laid off due to said large group of doctors being forced to go to EMR. Many of the MTs were offered positions in-house in other areas such as appointments, medical records, etc. The MTs who had the least amount of time there were S.O.L. - me being one of them as I had only been there for 5 years.
3) In 2009, I was a single mother of 2 caring for an elderly, bedridden mother. I was an MT working as an IC for an MTSO. I made 8cpl with a couple of good accounts. I was not a food stamp recipient.
4) In 2015, I was a single mother of 2 who had buried my elderly mother. I was working as an MT for Nuance as the lovely MTSO I had worked for since late 2008 had been gobbled up by first one company and then by Nuance. I had become a food stamp recipient.
5) Now, in 2017, I am still a single mother of 2 now teenagers. I work hard as an MT for an MTSO on the work of the client I have transcribed on since late 2008 for a lower line rate than before Nuance's lovely grid. Nuance still holds the client's contract, but outsources the work to said MTSO. I do feel blessed to still be able to work for the same group of physicians I have worked on for nearly 10 years. But... I AM STILL A FOOD STAMP RECIPIENT.
* Does this make me a horrid person?
* Does this make me a lazy member of society?
* Does this make me feel "entitled?"
I say NO! to all of that. I worked hard for many, many years in another industry before becoming a single mother and studying to become an MT. I worked hard to learn the specialities that I learned so that I could provide for my 2 children and take care of my bedridden mother. I continue to work hard, full time; however, the line rate has dropped and dropped and dropped, and I choose to supplement my children's, and my own, nutrition by accepting food stamps from the state of North Carolina. To Hades with anyone who hasn't walked in my shoes yet still wants to yank the nourishment from my children's mouths.
My children are well adjusted, well nourished, happy, and well mannered. One is a 7th, soon-to-be-8th, grader who is a member of the NJHS, and the other is just shy of A/B Honor Roll and a rising freshman in high school for the 2017-2018 school year. I am happy and thankful for the assistance we receive via the food stamps, and I have no guilt accepting the assistance as I do not feel I am a burden on society, I do not feel entitled, and I know that I am not lazy.
No one I know has ever begrudged someone - truly in need. However, I do begrudge

the lay abouts, Illegal aliens, drug addicts, lazy people for eating off of my dime.
I, too, have gone through a lot of changes, cuts, wage reductions, job changes for the exact reasons you mentioned.
It burns me to no end that I am expected to pay for those that refuse to help themselves. No where did I see anyone imply or suggest you would fit in that category and neither do I. However, there are a LOT that do, and those are the ones I am sick to death of carrying on my already loaded down, broken down back. P.S. I am also caring for an elderly parent with medical issues.
There are a few that do. Most are just like the poster you replied to. nm - VTMT

Food stamps were meant to be temporary. No one is putting - down anyone who has to use them.

But many people abuse the system.
All medical transcriptionists *know* for many years now - MT is a 'failing career'...
[ In Reply To ..]
yet you continue to hang on to a 'job' that you admit for years you can no longer afford to live on without government assistance.
Why...?
Anyone still holding onto this bogus 'career' and doing nothing to get out to find lucrative work only has themselves to blame.
Are you waiting for some miracle that one day your wages will increase again..?
That is NEVER going to happen.
Truth is, once most people get on government assistance, they never want to give that up and make sure they stay within the income requirements to keep the 'free ride going.' Not free to the taxpayer, however.
One should feel guilty if they are doing nothing to change their financial situations.
Everyone in that program who are capable of working should be cut off after a certain amount of time.
They time out of program...Doesn't make it - Right, doesn't mesn they are surviving

Are the MTs who are suffering the most just shamed into silence?? Are you letting tge hobbyist, online shopper MTs with high paid spouse assistance speak for you and shame your needs? Or is there just strong cognituve dissonance in the group?

Food Stamp Fraud Down By 2/3 In Past 10 Jun 04, 2015According to a new study by the non-partisan group Stateline, not only is the rate of Food Stamp fraud only at about 3.2 percent nationwide, it’s actually gone down since the Bush Recession. In fact, thanks to a set of initiates undertaken at both the state and federal levels, food stamp under- or over-payments are at the lowest they’ve been since SNAP’s original “Food Stamp Program” predecessor came into being in 1939.
Food stamp fraud has toppled by almost two thirds.
