info about Georgia

Posted: Apr 28, 2013

My husband and I have been living in Arizona for the last 7 years and think it's time for a change. We were thinking about Georgia-drove through it once on way to Florida many years ago and remember it as a pretty state. I wonder if anyone is from the Walton county area. We are looking for a smaller town and there seems to be some in Walton county. I would just like some information about how it is to live in that area (crime, access to shopping and medical care, etc.) We're older now and don't especially care about night life spots. He is retired and I'm an IC working remotely so jobs are not an issue either. Any information would be appreciated.

I don't live in Georgia, so I can't help you there, but this website/forum will probably have the information you're looking for...

I don't know about Walton County - sm

But, if you go a little northwest, there is Calhoun, GA and it is absolutely WONDERFUL there! It is a very clean little mountain town, very low, almost nonexistent crime. I have family who live there and the air just feels so good to breathe in. As far as shopping, they have cute little shops, but for your larger shopping, you can travel down to Atlanta, OR you are right on the Tennessee line and can hop over to Chattanooga, TN in no time. I actually would love to live up there, but I'm in south Georgia and my children are still in school here and I don't want to move them. Calhoun is so CLEAN also, probably one of the cleanest cities I have seen.

Thank you both for your information. I have been on city-data and they do have a lot of information, just not much about the Walton county area. I have heard of Calhoun, sounds nice. What part of south Georgia are you in? Do you not like it there?

I live below Macon, GA - GAMT

South GA is not as nice as north GA. Not as clean, more crime, etc. I like it here, I guess because I was raised here, but if I was retirement age and wanted to enjoy life, I would head up to Calhoun.
I agree with No GA - southerner

I lived in several areas in Georgia and loved it there.

I first lived in Bremen, a little town in west Georgia. Low COL, low crime, everyone knows each other.

When I lived just outside of Atlanta on the northwest edge, I hated it. Lots of crime, gangs, noise.

I then moved out to Gainesville and loved it there the best. This is just a little south of the mountainous area, but next to a huge lake. Same as in west GA, but with a big lake.

I would drive north into the mountain area to hike and I loved, loved that area. It is a little cooler in the summers, not much, but the breezes help. If I didn't have a kid in school, I would go back to Georgia in a heartbeat.
I honeymooned in Gainesville, GA :-) - beautiful

Georgia....... Crime Rate Apr 20, 2010
In 1982, Kennesaw, Georgia passed a city gun ordinance that required heads of households to keep at least one firearm in their homes. Crimes against persons which include homicide, rape, armed robbery, aggravated assault, and burglary, plummeted 74 percent the first year, dropped another 45 percent the next year, and has remained notably low ever since, despite a doubling of the population. From 1983 to 1993, armed robberies averaged a mere 1.6 annually, rapes 1.5, and murders (none with firearm ...

Who Is Going To Win Special Election In Georgia Jun 20, 2017
Georgia’s Special Election Comes to a Nail-Biting Finish By JONATHAN MARTIN and NATE COHNJUNE 20, 2017 ATLANTA — Tuesday’s runoff between Karen Handel and Jon Ossoff in Georgia’s Sixth Congressional District will decide what has become the most expensive House campaign in history — and quite possibly the most consequential special election since Watergate. Georgia Republican Quits HouseMar 03, 2010
Nathan Deal is stepping down from his elected position as a representative from Georgia. That will cause a special election ($$), let health care reform pass the house with one less vote, and let him avoid the ethics committee investigation into him. He will be running for governor and is currently (I think) in 3rd place behind the other 2 republican contenders. NJ ...

Georgia--No ACA, No Emergency Room CareMar 01, 2014
Talk about getting what you vote for. Move out of Georgia if you can. . . **** Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal (R) has a problem: rural hospitals keep closing, overwhelmed by financial troubles they can’t solve on their own. The obvious solution – accepting Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act – is the one thing Deal refuses to even consider. There is no great mystery here as to why the rural hospitals can’t keep their doors open. These facilities have routinely covered low- ...

Guns In Bars And Churches In GeorgiaApr 23, 2014
Nothing makes me feel more secure than a drunk dude with a gun, except maybe this!! Under the bill, school districts would now be able, if they wanted, to allow some employees to carry a firearm under certain conditions. The bill also eliminates the fingerprinting requirement for renewing weapons carry licenses. According to the Marietta Daily Journal, the legislation prohibits the state from creating and maintaining a database of licensed weapons carriers and repeals the state-required l ...

Food Stamp Usages Plummets In Georgia. Jun 24, 2017
decrease in the number of people receiving food stamps as the improving economy lifts many recipients into new jobs and frees them from the fear of going hungry. The number of Georgians getting food stamps has dropped by 300,000 from 1.9 million in April 2013 to 1.6 million. That decrease of 16 percent in the federally funded program saves taxpayers tens of millions of dollars monthly. That may sound great, but it’s also fueling a passionate debate about which people should get food stamps ...

Didn't know about the below info: Yesterday, the House of Representatives passed by a vote of  247 - 181 another short-term continuing resolution to fund the government for one additional week. It includes $12 billion worth of spending cuts, while also funding the Defense Department for the remainder of the year. But, Senate Democrats and the President rejected that measure.  Senator Reid said it is a "non starter," ...
