Food stamp fraud down by 2/3 in past 10

According to a new study by the non-partisan group Stateline, not only is the rate of Food Stamp fraud only at about 3.2 percent nationwide, it’s actually gone down since the Bush Recession. In fact, thanks to a set of initiates undertaken at both the state and federal levels, food stamp under- or over-payments are at the lowest they’ve been since SNAP’s original “Food Stamp Program” predecessor came into being in 1939. Food stamp fraud has toppled by almost two thirds. In fact, national fraud/error rate has toppled by almost two-thirds from Bush’s second year of presidency in 2002 to Obama’s fourth year in 2013. In 2002, Food Stamp fraud was at about 8 percent — in 2013 it hit 3.2 percent. ;

Americans receiving food stamps were caught selling and bartering their benefits online for art, housing and cash, according to a new federal report that investigates fraud in the nation’s largest nutrition support program.

Complicating the situation is the fact states around the country are having trouble tracking and prosecuting the crimes because their enforcement budgets have been slashed despite the rapidly-rising number of food stamp recipients, according to the Government Accountability Office report.

Under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, 47 million people have been awarded $76 billion in benefits. State agencies are responsible for addressing SNAP recipient fraud under the guidance and monitoring of the Food and Nutrition Service.

“Such rapid program growth can increase the potential for fraud unless appropriate agency controls are in place to help minimize these risks,” the investigators said in their report.

The GAO report resulted from a review of 11 state and federal efforts to fight food stamp fraud, effectiveness of certain fraud detection tools and how FNS oversees state anti-fraud efforts.

Recipients include illegal immigrants thanks to a partnership between the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the agency that distributes food stamps, and the Mexican government. They even go to Mexico to promote participation by illegals.

Add to that, illegals can get back taxes and EITC, even if they never filed - a tax return, meaning no FICA

Coupled with big business, i.e., Wal-Mart, MTSOs, etc. refusal to put their billion dollar profits into their employees or even back into the company, is why many of us need to go on food stamps.

Do you think so lowly of those on food stamps? Most are workers, like we are, making a pittance because our employers are allowed to steal our wages. Thanks to what is happening to our industry amongst other lowly paid workers, many MTs are now on food stamps.

All the policies that allow big businesses to offshore their employees and their profits were enacted during W's reign, and this congress will never enact any law to help poor or middle income people, that is why many of us MTs are in sad economic trouble.

I think those companies making billions in profits who don't pay their employees a living wage should be fined - at the very least. Connecticut has the right idea.

I never thought about it until a young lady told me to apply when I was complaining to her about the jobs and the poor pay. I was called on the phone and immediately granted 194 a month. I thought you couldnt own your home, but you can. They take your gross pay and compare it to your bills and that is how they come up with it..I needed them too.
