Florida "crackers"

Posted: Feb 1, 2012

Now, my family came here from Scotland, so I understand that in Florida, "crackers" is a name given to whites of a Celtic descent who came to Florida in the 18th century, but I'm wondering how many people know that.  I'm guessing most would consider it an extremely negative racial slur meaning white people who oppose civil rights.  Was this really necessary?

Florida crackers - Conservative

I agree with you. Sad part is, the outrage or lack thereof will be solely determined by the person that said it and what "side" they're on. Person did not have enough of a command of the English language to select a more appropriate phrase.

Name-calling - old and burned out

It would be ideal if we could all have discussions about the issues without insults and epithets. Ah, but I dream!

Name calling - what are you reading

That was a direct quote from a CNN broadcast.

Don't know if he meant it to be insulting or not - mthead

But I got this off of a Website for Cracker Country, near Tampa.

What is a Cracker?

Florida’s cattle industry was the biggest in the east, shipping beef to northern states as well as to Key West, Cuba, and the Bahamas. Cattlemen, known as “Crackers," were legends. Cattle roamed free in the Florida woodlands and had to be rounded up before being sold and shipped. Lariats, or lassos, didn't work in the thick underbrush; instead, cowhunters used whips to round them up. The whips were not used to strike the cattle but were actually popped or “cracked." This resulted in a sound similar to a rifle shot which could be heard over very long distances. When early settlers heard the sound they would say, “Here come the Crackers.” Cattlemen braved Florida’s marshes, harsh weather, and wild animals on a mission to drive their cattle to port.

The cattle industry and Cracker tradition began to subside following three significant events: the closing of the open range due to new fence laws; an increase in population sparking land development; and an industrial boom which resulted in a shift away from agriculture. Despite this, there are still many cattlemen working throughout Florida today, and the term “Cracker” is sometimes used to describe native born Floridians.

Here in the 21st century, Cracker Country commits itself to the teaching and preservation of 19th-century Cracker Culture in Florida, ensuring that it will not be lost to future generations.

Insulting or not - Thanks for the history

Many of us in the south would understand this, but I think it really helps to clarify the term; thank you.
What I find odd about this is that CCN went aboslutely balistic on morning shows after Obama sang because someone referred to him as "entertainer in chief" with "racist this, "racist" that??? See no racism in entertainer in chief at all. Yet, CNN never said a word about the cracker comment. CNN screams racism to everything/anthing and it is really getting old. Less and less inclined to watch CNN for that reason.

I saw that too. - Zville MT

Al Sharpton was practically apoplectic! I'm actually less inclined to watch any of the news anymore - one station is screaming racism and another is arguing it's not. Really tired of all the hypocricy. I'll be glad when November has come and gone - either way.

Sick of it, too. Eveything is so hypocrital anymore. You either are for something or you are against something, regardless of who says or does it. What is wrong with just having integrity and responsibility for your own words/actions/beliefs without all the 2-sidedness? Some things are very cut and dried as to whether they are right or wrong and no amount of spin changes that for those with a conscious and a moral compass. P.S. Al Sharpton is one of the worst offenders. Used to listen to him all the time, but not anymore.

Thanks for the belly laugh...so seldom happens on this board; usually time is spent mopping up blood. For the life of me, could not figure out what you were talking about until I saw the youtube. Certainly worth the few seconds for such a "knee-slapper" :)

Florida ColdFeb 19, 2015
At the risk of getting tomatoes thrown at me for those people in the north, here in SW Florida, we're not used to cold weather. It's 56 today, and going into the 30s tonight. I can't stop shivering. The heat in many of the homes is not efficient at all (it shouldn't have to be!), and our windows and doors aren't insulated. We have an open floor plan and high, vaulted ceilings, so heating it is almost impossible. And it's windy out so all the cold here is coming in t ...

Florida Dog Owners...help W/fleas, Please!Mar 04, 2011
Sorry if this post is long-winded. Every year the fleas get worse and worse. I'm trying to head it off this year before I get an infestation with the warmer weather. First of all, I have 3 dogs (2 shih tzu, 1 lab-ridgeback mix), we live in a heavily wooded area with lots of critters. I can keep the flea/tick problem under control during the colder temps but I've noticed over the last few days with the warmer temps that the dogs are getting fleas and ticks again. I realize that in a f ...

Coincidentally, there's tremendous overlap between the other states with the highest percentages of uninsured people and those with Republican governors.
