"Dems say earmarks don't matter..."

Posted: Nov 19, 2010

See article.  Hmm...this is different than what Obama said i.e. he would stop earmarks...didn't he say that?  Google Barbara Boxer and earmarks when you finish this article...verry interesting.  Republicans guilty of this too...LOTS of earmarks during Bush but to their credit they would agree to a 2-year moratorium....not so the Dems it would seem.

I looked at one site and it was interesting, but I - Backwards Typist

would like to know what's with all the military earmarks. Shouldn't they be covered by the defense budget?

Anyway, 416 earmarks from 2008 on up to the tune of $2,668,336,198?

I don't know what site you were on, but I went to this one:

http://www.legistorm.com/earmarks/details/member/11/Sen_Barbara_Boxer_CA/page/1/sort/amount/type/desc/year/all.html

I'm going to check out a few more to compare. This is a pretty neat site.

I believe the sole purpose of earmarks... - sam

no matter which side initiates them and both sides have, it is Washington politics...some of it is the you scratch my back I'll scratch yours...trying to get more money from big donors in exchange for pushing government contracts for various things in their diretion. Some of them are for "pet projects" in their home states. Those improvements to Camp Pendleton were probably done by civilian contractors...most of that kind of thing is done by civilian contractors. Perhaps those contractors are big contributors to Boxer, Feinstein, et al. Most of these earmarks probably were attached to some appropriations bill for the military bduget. Earmarks can be attached to any appropriations bill (deciding where money is going to go) and the earmark itself doesn't really have to have anything to do with the bill itself (just like this recent one of Fair Pay which actually was a bill to prevent capping of lawsuits). There is STILL nothing transparent about Washington, even though the President said that was one of his main goals, then promptly held all the meetings in health care behind closed doors. Sigh.

Was it just 2 days ago McConnell was saying that? - Flip-Flop

[ In Reply To ..]
Why they call it politics, I guess.

Yes, like many politicians before him.... - sam

[ In Reply To ..]
Miatch McConnell flip-flopped on earmarks. He has flopped to the correct side this time. That was the point of the post. Said both sides are guilty of earmarks. Democrats don't want to give them up; once again the Republicans seemed to have learned something from the midterms and although it is a bitter pill for some, they are willing to go with a 2-year moratorium on earmarks. The President when compaigning wanted to ban them. Have not heard a word about that since he was elected and the only Dems talking don't think earmarks are a big deal.

Have to give the points to the Republicans on this one.

Nah, the Democrats are going to watch - the Republicans implode - nm

Do you not see what's going on in your own party - It's the democrates that are imploding
[ In Reply To ..]
Maybe if you read what's really going on you would understand. There is so much fighting going on within the democrats. Groups are pitting against each other all to stay in power. They messed things up for the country and now they feel they should just be able to slime back into position and keep destroying the country.

You need to read what's really going on. I now how easy and how much joy it much be to hate a party so much, but if people would take themselves out of being "party loyal" and read what's really going on, then people could sit back and make better informed decisions.

The President addressed earmaks on - Nov 13

look it up.
Well, by george, he did. I stand corrected. - sam

He said he was open to "reform." I guess Barbara Boxer didn't get the memo. Or...as it appears...the inmates are taking over the asylum. They are really not unified anymore. They are all over the place. What was the word the other poster used...imploding?

Interesting though, he is open to "reform" even though he during his campaign he said "ban." Here, I won't make you look it up:

Jan 6, 2009 ... "We are going to ban all earmarks," President-elect Obama pledged.

Big difference between "ban all" and "reform." Now the Republicans want a ban and he wants "reform."

How the worm does turn. lol.
Bachmann wants earmarks, Boehner calls it "special projects" - R Paul wants them for his distric
[ In Reply To ..]
Republicans imploding. . .
Geez, calm down...lol. Apparently Obama wants them too... - sam
[ In Reply To ..]
so why do you care if Republicans want them? Boxer wants them and your PRESIDENT wants them at least to some degree. If by your estimation that means the Republicans are imploding I would suggest to you it means the Democrats are also imploding from the TOP down. lol.
So far only found the Rand Paul information.... - sam

You remark is taken totally out of context from what I read. What he said was, if they were not able to get earmarks banned, that he would advocate for Kentucky to get their share.

Look it up.

And I put to you....what's wrong with that? If the Dems manage to block banning earmarks which they probably will, then why shouldn't he try to get his share of the pork for his state? That is what all of Congress has been doing for decades.

That's what Barbara Boxer is doing, although she doesn't want them banned period. Ok for Barbara, baddddd for Rand. Got it.
Banned, Reformed, Gimme - Call it what YOU will

By the way, some call them military contracts.
Ron Paul on earmarks. - LVMT

He votes against the spending which is the biggest issue. If they pass the bills, he looks out for the best interest of his constituents. Earmarks also track how money is spent - transparency. He explains in link below.
OK. So why is Sam making it a big deal? - Sounds like all of them - nm
[ In Reply To ..]
the point of the first post is that Obama promised... - sam
[ In Reply To ..]
during his campaign "We will ban earmarks." Now unless he had a mouse in his pocket, he was talking about he and his party. Barbara Boxer said this week that earmarks were no big deal, in other words, she doesn't want to ban them. The Republicans (at least some of them) were seeking a ban on earmarks. Now if Obama intended to honor his promise, he would support that. What he is supporting is "reform" now that the Republicans want to do what he promised to do.

I call that a big deal. Another campaign promise bites the dust. His supporters, of course, forgive the latest lie and quickly want to move on.

As I said, the worm has turned.

Do you honestly think anything is going to be any different no matter who wins the election?  Neither one is the miracle worker they claim to be, and as long as Congress continues to be the giant kindergarten it has become, we'll still be screwed.  Sorry to be such a pessimist, but that's how I feel right now.  It's just nothing but empty promises. ...

Before Obama leaves, WW3 will occur.  So, it will not matter who is president next term.  Look out for Russia.  Also, did you that the Statue of Liberty means ISIS, Goddess of Ishtar?  Ishtar was introduced to the Greeks as Astarte through the Phoenicians. We can see that the lineage of the Greek and Roman goddess of the planet Venus goes all the way back to ancient Babylon of around 3,000 BC.  What was Ishtar’s legacy in Babylon? Does It Matter Which Party Wins? Jul 02, 2011
Congratulations!! People's World Endorses Obama and Dems in 2012. Does it matter which party wins? It is obvious that there is a growing feeling of frustration and even anger among supporters of the Democratic Party with its performance over the past two years. AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka, speaking for the labor movement, strongly expressed this unhappiness in some recent speeches. I am disappointed too with some aspects of the Obama administration's domestic and foreign pol ...
