It really won't matter

Posted: Sep 3, 2012

Do you honestly think anything is going to be any different no matter who wins the election?  Neither one is the miracle worker they claim to be, and as long as Congress continues to be the giant kindergarten it has become, we'll still be screwed.  Sorry to be such a pessimist, but that's how I feel right now.  It's just nothing but empty promises.

Some things will be different - CR

Some presidents are more likely to push for war, taxes, etc. They may not go through, but the point is to elect someone who coincides with your values.

Although I do agree with you to a large extent.

I also think it's odd that people get so fired up and become so rude with each other when it comes to politics, when no one ever really changes their minds, and the people who are actually running for president would probably be horrified/amused to see some of the things said on a board such as this!

Unfortunately, power has been usurped from our - representative governments these days. Instead,

[ In Reply To ..]
the real power is held by an oligarchy of unbelievably rich people. That group of families I said wouldn't fill a high school stadium.

"Data on inequality show the massive transfer of wealth in favour of the rich. Since 1978, the top 1% have increased their income by 256% while the average income of American households has remained stagnant or even declined. Over the last two years of the recession, 93% of the national income increase has been captured by the top 1%."

"About 50% of national income is concentrated in around 300 thousand people. Just 1% of the richest American hold an investment fund, Black Rock, which administers a total portfolio of 3.500 billion dollars, more than the reserves of any central bank in the World. Goldman Sachs has assets whose value is higher than the European Central bank which manages the single currency of 17 States. Private foundations such as the Bill Gates foundation give more aid to poor countries than the World Health Organization (WHO) and can therefore control decisions in healthcare policy for entire nations.

"The dangers of a plutocracy (a government of the rich) were explained by Adam Smith who warned of "great inequality" where "civil government" is "instituted for the defence of the rich against the poor".

This is a reality in today's US society: a small oligarchy - 300 thousand rich men, i.e. 0.01% of the population, have more than half of the US national income relative to 180 million people.

But the current issue is that they are actively involved in the government of the US nation to maintain the current state of power."

These quotes are just from a blog, but google "U.S. oligarchy" and you'll find all the well-credentialed articles you could want. These days, what our elected officials may want to do and what they can do are very, very different things.

WE, on the other hand, are as powerful as 300 million people can be against 300,000--if we choose to work together again. Divided we have fallen.

No difference - Money rules!

[ In Reply To ..]
I think you're right, nothing of substance will change. Our "elected representatives" are all beholden to the same group of power brokers it looks like. We are watching a big very expensive circus!

Oh, it's different now all right! I remember when everyone who worked - a normal job could afford a decent life. That

[ In Reply To ..]
has changed, in case someone hasn't noticed. It changed on our watch while we actively helped eviscerate our democracy. Are we DUMB or what? Dreadful guardians of our republic? HOW do we explain what we did to our children? And what will we say we did to restore the country we were bequeathed?

Enough of this wimpy can't-be-helped crap! It's so way past time to say NO! We can tax these greedy destroyers right into the gutter. Or their version--sitting in castles they can't afford to maintain.

Yes, we CAN do that! We did it before. Beginning about this time last century, as a matter of fact, when our great-grands got tired of reduced to the poverty that was considered an appropriate share for them during the last "Golden Age."

Our grands and great-grands fixed this problem once. - That 90% tax bracket that sounds so crazy?

[ In Reply To ..]
It was a way of legally restoring to our nation and the people of those days the wealth that was being stolen from them legally (and too often sent overseas). Even at 90%, vast wealth was still social-engineered to flow so inexorably into the hands of the most wealthy that they endured as a class.

That's the most I care to allow, dare to allow. Anything else is a danger to both Democracy and my own way of life. And, of course, even our roads and bridges. As we are seeing.

It's already becoming different. If O is elected, (sm) - nm

NM, turning half of us on the other half IS a plan to - destroy our ability to help ourselves. That is

[ In Reply To ..]
why people like dear old Rush and others are constantly exhorting their followers to hate and block the other half of the electorate. They don't work for YOU. They aren't red or blue. They've just gotten very wealthy themselves betraying with every show the people who put their trust in them.

United we stand. Don't you want your kids to have a nice life? Or is scrabbling for every dollar, worrying how to covered their pared-down expenses every month good enough for them?

It didn't used to be like this. Just 30 years ago it wasn't!

Okay, let me give you a hypothetical (sm) - nm

[ In Reply To ..]
I agree as far as dividing, but I believe it is being done by Obama. Regardless.....question. Let's just say after the election, Obama gets re-elected, Senate and House stay exactly the same. Obama wants to push through another stimulus, which we know he will, sinking us further into debt. (think of those grandchildren now). Should the Republicans in Congress block his job-killing, debt-raising regulations, or just go along to get along? I say keep blocking.

Shhh. :) I did see a Communist at a rally 6 years ago. He - was standing all alone and wearing a sign

so people would know he was there.

You know, even when I was an 18-year-old liberal student in California in the 60s, there were very few Commies around, although the few were making a lot of noise--so people would notice them.

Fact is, then, just like now, no one was interested in destroying our country to copy a scary-dysfunctional system.

You're running from the wrong boogie. It's our own greed, stupidity, and inaction pure and simple that're bringing us down. The usual.
Buying the Obama rhetoric, I see. Good luck to ya. - I'll pray for you. (sm)

The Commies/Marxists at the DNC will be in abundance, but they won't be wearing signs this time to identify themselves.

I said this the other night. I was off by only 3 months with Bush.
NM, the normal divisions were being flamed into our current - schism when Obama was in college. By the
[ In Reply To ..]
time he entered public office the previous communication and gentlemanly level of cooperation in
Congress between the two parties had been destroyed. This was in the 1980s and early 1990s and just gathered steam from there. Remember the days when people like Newt instructed everyone to never say Democrat without saying radical liberal Democrat or something else meant to be a slur? When they insisted there was no such thing as a moderate Democrat, we were all atheists and Commies bent on destroying the American way?

It didn't used to be like that. People used to be more sensible. Or perhaps just act more sensibly. :)
But never division and hatred like there is now. - I blame Obama for that.

A very unsettling period of time and I believe it's beginning again, but this time it's starting with the government, itself, riling up people...and I'm not just talking about the President.
I believe it's engineered by people who don't need and would - not care for the constraints of government. Like
[ In Reply To ..]
the Koch Brothers and Rupert Murdoch just for some very well known names.

Rush Limbaugh, for instance, meets routinely with representatives of powerful interests to decide what message to push at his followers that week. And the message is always the need to attack anyone who might get in the way of big business's profits, topped with a lavish dose of hate mongering and ego stroking to keep them engaged and revved up.

Studies show that people who tune in to those things want reassurance that they belong to a group of people who feel like them (unlike too many of the folk around them at home) and that they are right in their beliefs, and it's so easy to feed them what they came for, provide them with the "clever" catchphrase of the day, and sic them on the chosen targets.

There is a big huge fundamental difference between Obama and Romney. Obama's "founding fathers" were Frank Marshall Davis (communist)etc, other communists and marxist revolutionaries. He was taught from a child to hate capitalism, probably what the American Flag represents, the Brits, and Jews. He was taught anticolonialism, while his brother George who lives in Kenya has a more conservative view, he said So what if the Whites colonized South Africa, there used to be useless wars there until the Brits came and colonized them, so they are a good thing. Anyway maybe if you see the movie that is in theatres right now called 2016: Obama's America you will know why you have to actually go and physicall vote. Go to the library and register, then find out where you go vote, or vote early

Then think of it this way (if you think they are alike) Romney will buy us more time. If you think Romney wants to collapse the economy of the United States, turn the US into a Welfare state like Chicago (*his launching pad), reduce our balistic missles to 300 while Russia has 5000, putting us all in danger, and turn his back on Israel, then don't do anything. Just complain that the puppeteers pull the strings. Jesse Ventura had an interview with a certain person 2 years ago and she said the only way to turn this all around is to stand together as a nation. Yes we still have the power when we know who the enemy is and what they want to accomplish.

Movie Obama's American is just coming to my small town next weekend. I am thinking it should be getting around to the smaller theaters (if they want to show it) within the next month or so. I am planning to see it next weekend. I really like Dinesh D'Souza. He is a very intelligent man. Whether you agree wholeheartedly with his theory or not, he is bound to give you some facts you did not know about Obama to think about. I saw him defend his movie to a liberal newsman and very quietly and matter-of-factly turn the conversation around until the newsman who was orginally telling him his ideas were preposterous was actually agreeing with him. I would encourage everyone to see it. I am voting for Romney, and I could not imagine anything making me change my opinion as I have followed the elections/primaries very carefully this year, but if there was a film about his life I would definitely see that and draw my own conclusions afterward. Hope 2016 does come to your town so you can judge for yourself.

You're right. Our entire government and electoral - system is a sham. No matter - sm

who wins the election, Republican or Democrat, will have little bearing on the economy as a whole. It's already beginning to inch back up again (albeit very slowly, and only for the rich, mainly). But even if it improves by leaps and bounds in the next few years, or once again crashes to near-depression depths, it'll do so on its own, with the help of the banks and the stock market.

Whichever party wins can only try to control who gets more tax breaks, and who gets hosed.

Which is the lesser of two evils? - Me
