Coming to their senses

Posted: Jan 18, 2013

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (TheBlaze/AP) – A suburban New York City newspaper has removed the names and addresses of residents with pistol permits from its website. Publication of the permit data following last month’s school shooting massacre in Newtown, Conn. produced a storm of outrage from gun owners. It also quickly resulted in a new state measure meant to protect permit holders’ privacy. The president and publisher of The Journal News Media Group announced the move Friday. Janet Hasson said the new law does not require removing the data, but “doing so complies with its spirit.” The Journal News had published interactive maps on its LoHud.com site pinpointing thousands of permit holders in Westchester and Rockland County. The maps remained online late Friday but could no longer be manipulated to find names and addresses. As of Friday, two homes listed on the “gun map” had been burglarized, including one instance where crooks stole two guns. In the other burglary attempt, the robbers reportedly went straight for the homeowner’s guns. http://www.theblaze.com/stories/2013/01/18/new-york-newspaper-removes-controversial-gun-map-amid-public-outcry/;

How sensible of them - finally.

Interesting 5th paragraph.

Obvious targets - using info from the newspaper

Nice. (not) Notice the newspaper did not apologize.

If the residents had guns, why didn't they - shoot intruders?

[ In Reply To ..]
If they weren't home, why weren't the guns locked up?

Why weren't they responsible?

A good alarm system might have stopped intruder no matter what they were after.

Article I read said... - sm

So a criminal breaks into a house - SM

and you ask why the homeowners were not responsible? So now if you are burgled it is your responsibility - not the burgler's responsibility? Maybe they can't afford or do not want an alarm system - should be their choice either way. And however they want to secure their guns or anything else that they hold valuable again should be up to them. A person or persons broke into their home and stole from them. No one is responsible for those actions other than the person or persons who committed that act.
Easy answer to your first question... Yup. - neener

Psssst.... don't tell anyone, but we're gun owners here (and I'm liberal....shhhhhh). We have 2 gun safes. One is huge and waaaaaay to heavy for even 2 people to lift and carry away, and the other is much smaller yet still too heavy for 2 people to comfortably lift and carry away. And both of them are bolted down on a cement surface. But then again, we're responsible people here (and not paranoid of Obama coming to grab our guns) and gun collecting is SO's hobby. As responsible gun owners, we do not have to have our guns ready , loaded, and waiting for imaginary criminals or things that go bump in the night, so they are kept as secure as possible, and we do a very good job at it, as I could not live with myself if someone got their hands on one of our guns and caused any harm.... let alone the devastation that happened in Newtown.

Long story short... It is the responsibility of the gun owner to secure their property so it does not wind up in the wrong hands and inflict damage on the community, whether it's a criminal who breaks in or a child who is in our home. It's common sense, and if you are lacking in that department, then gun ownership is not for you.
How long would it take you to unsecure a gun, load it and take care of - an intruder if threatened with bodily harm?
[ In Reply To ..]
especially if your guns are in another room or on another floor. Did you ever time yourself?

I think I'm asking a valid question.
I got the distinct impression neener doesn't - have guns for killing
[ In Reply To ..]
She said her SO was a gun collector, and alluded to the fact that the reason for having guns was not for defense or murder, by her or anyone, which is why they are secure as possible. Therefore, she is a responsible gun owner.
It's a very valid question - neener

Have I ever timed myself? No. However, I do not believe that having a gun available is necessarily the best method of home protection. Not only that, but I think it's irresponsible to market guns for that purpose, especially when it's done by feeding into people's fear and paranoia which can lead to rash decision making on the purchaser's part and ultimately lead to another irresponsible gun owner. This includes the stories of how a gun stopped a crime (a favorite NRA tactic). It's funny how they never tell the stories of how a gun was turned on its owner or how the owner's kid found it while looking in their parents' room.

Personally, I don't live my life in fear. I realize that my chances of having someone break into my home to steal items is rather low (SO, however, has had 2 break-ins in the past). Even if my home was selected to be broken into, I realize that the chances of the burglars doing this when the house is empty is greater than it is when I'm home (SO was not home on both occasions). Most criminals are looking to steal items and prefer a house free of other people when doing so... it's just easier for them. Having an unsecured firearm in the house for the just-in-case situation just gives the burglars a firearm to add to their loot in this situation.

I realize that my chances of having a home invasion happening is even lower, but even if we were surprised by armed criminals kicking in the front door while watching TV, what good is a loaded pistol in the nightstand or on top of the fridge going to do? I guess the closest thing this situation reminds me of is when my grandfather was held up by gunpoint at our family business. When you don't see the threat coming... you can't reach for your gun. Also I hate to think of what would have happened to my grandfather if he did go to reach for a gun (if available) in that situation (they held the gun pressed against his abdomen).

Even less likely to happen is encountering the serial rapist or serial killer. If this were the case, I would think that part of their routine would be to stalk and then at the right opportunity either grab me when I'm not looking or sneak in quietly and attack while I'm sleeping. Again, a loaded gun in the nightstand, on top of the fridge, or on a shelf in the closet is not going to help.

Lastly, the situation least likely to happen is the US military busting through the door to take our guns in the name of Obama. If this were to happen, I think that we would be out of luck. After all, we can only shoot 1 gun at a time, and the weapons we own are no match for those owned by the military.

We take common sense measures to home security which include an alarm, locks on all doors and windows, locks on all bedroom doors, 2 dogs, and keeping a phone on the nightstand to call 9-1-1. Also, we have good communication with our neighbors who would be concerned if they happened to see or hear anything unusual. We don't feel the need to, but we do have very realistic looking pellet guns that we could keep in the nightstand, but like I said, we don't live in fear. For those who do, there are other non-lethal alternatives such as pepper spray, stun guns, the pellet guns that I mentioned, etc., that one could keep nearby to feel safer. Heck... they could even use the old can of Aqua Net and a lighter like we did as teenagers walking home at night in the 80s. I guess my point is is that anyone who is scared to the point that they need a loaded gun available at all times is not ready to be a gun owner.

Sorry this reply is so long, but I wanted to give some insight into my thought process. Sometimes when folks hear liberal and gun owner in the same sentence, they don't know what to think. Have a good one.
Your post reminded me of a good argument - for those who claim SM
[ In Reply To ..]
that women who get raped are to blame for one reason or another. Just read your message but substitute rape for a gun owner.
Lemme get this straight.... are you really trying to compare gun owner with rape victims?? - neener
[ In Reply To ..]
A bit much dontcha think? Maybe you're trying to argue just for kicks. If not, you're being very nearsighted. How would you feel if, in that situation, it wasn't a burglar who made off with the small safe or lockbox, but rather a teen or tween visitng the home? How about a mentally ill family member who resides in the home? Is it the gunowner's fault their house was broken into... absolutely not. They are definitely the victims in that sense. Is it their fault their guns are now in the wrong hands because they failed to properly secure them... yes. Please keep in mind that I'm assuming the gun owners used a lockbox or a small lightweight safe that was able to be carried and not secured to the floor (IOW, improper safe storage). If they did have a larger safe and the criminals came equipped with the proper tools to remove the safe, carry it out of the house, and transport it, then I'm 100% wrong, but I find that situation a bit far fetched.

The point is, when one decides they are going to own a firearm, it is that person's responsibility to their community and themselves to make sure that it does not wind up in the wrong hands. If you don't want to invest in proper storage... you're not ready to be a gun owner. If you need a loaded gun in your nightstand because you're scared of the boogeyman... you're not ready to be a gun owner. If you need a loaded gun to show off to prove you're hardcore... you're more than like never going to be ready to be a gun owner. If you're a drunk or a drug user.... nope... not ready. And , IMO, if you need a stockpile of guns so you're prepared to fight the government... you're not ready to be a gun owner and could probably benefit from professional help.

Instead of using rape victims as a comparison... how about comparing the gun owners with another member of society that introduces a potentially dangerous item/weapon into their homes for protection... the guard dog/pitbull owner. Is it not the owner's responsibility to have a fence and secure the dog to make sure it does not escape into the neighborhood? If the dog does wind up out in the community and attacks someone, whose fault is it then?
yes, she was. Ironic, isn't it? - gun owners as victims

I have copied and pasted something someone wrote that pretty much sums up Scott (slime) Walker's intentions.   Diane Ravitch has it in a nutshell. Of Scott Walker, she writes: He expects that over time, most public workers will stop paying dues, especially now that they have to pay more for their healthcare and pension benefits. And thus will he cripple, perhaps permanently, a perennial political opponent. If Gov. Walker succeeds, there will be no organized voice to oppose hi ...

Something just struck me today.  I have a feeling that the truth about the two major candidates for president lies somewhere around the facts that Mitt Romney isn't as bad as his gaffes and appearances might indicate, and Barack Obama deserves a lot more credit than his opponents give him.   Disagreement has always been part of political discussion in this country, but I hate where our political climate has taken us--no one DARES to say anything good about "the other side."   ...
