What is the Libertarian solution to the West Virginia crisis?

Posted: Jan 11, 2014

From what I understand, Libertarians do not believe in government regulation or assistance.   The West Virgina area recently had a chemical spill making all the available water totally unuseable except for flushing toilets.  Hospitals, nursing homes, restaurants are all  unable to do their jobs.  An etimated population of almost half a million people are affected, as well as the animals.  I wonder who all drank the water before this chemical spill was identified?  Live and let live, I guess.

Federal disaster relief - NK

[ In Reply To ..]
I think that comes under the category of no expenditures unless there's an offset. For instance, Rand Paul pledged to vote against the Hurricane Sandy relief bill unless it was offset by an equal amount in reduction of foreign aid. It probably also comes under the states paying for disaster aid themselves. Ron Paul spent a lot of time and energy trying to get rid of FEMA.

Once we've poisoned our water sources and polluted our air, there won't be life to sustain anyhow.

So, yes, let's not continue to invest in energy alternatives despite failures. Everything that is a success always works on the first try.

Let's just keep using antiquated energy methods that are running out anyhow. Let's let our grandchildren worry about it.

All for alternative energy, but in the meantime, let's go with the Keystone Pipeline and clean coal technology, not investing in some puppet company run by BO cronies. So many failures have been traced back to him. It's embarrassing.

As for worrying about our grandchildren, let's talk about the debt they'll inherit, which was extremely increased by Bush and substantially insanely increased by Obama.

the production of coal from "dirty" to "clean" is the cause of over 300,000 people in WV having contaminated water.
It definitely is, which is why coal needs to be eliminated as a fuel - source :-) nm

I don't think there's any funny business, but anything's possible.

A had a friend who hailed from Nitro, WV. Her father worked at a chemical plant there. Turns out that life expectancy in this portion of WV, because of its concentration on chemical plants, etc., is lower than average. People who live and work in these counties have a lower life expectancy than the average.

I'm pretty sure Nitro is also in the same county where this incident occurred. These chemical plants, or whatever they are called, have been around for years. They are old and I bet this becomes more prevalent, not for any other reason than natural degradation. It's really sad that in this day and age we can't do better.

Libertarians do not shut down corporate interests, do they? - sm

Who would develop alternative energy sources, the coal companies? BP Oil?

Alternative energy sources already identified - and developed by Tesla

[ In Reply To ..]
And utilized by powers that be for their own purposes. JP Morgan shut Tesla down by badmouthing him and blacklisting him while he was alive, and CIA went into his apartment after his death and stole his papers. The powers that be, the shadow government, the illuminati, are screwing all of us every which way, economically, etc.

Bush, Clinton, Bush, and Obama are all CIA. That's why Clinton always knew he would be president, as well as Obama.

Google and You Tube: dreams of my real father and anything by Andrew Basiago, David Icke, Jordan Maxwell, Alex Jones (infowars, prisonplanet).

China is now the #1 country using coal and the largest polluters with the lax regulations.

Bituminous coal (found in most of this USA) gives off more pollutants than Anthracite coal, which is found in the same area as the Marcellus Shale gas. I don't believe they use any chemicals on Anthracite coal. I think it's just washed with water.

Clean coal technology has come a long way, too. There are articles out there on clean coal technology.

Here's a little tidbit on the history of coal.

http://www.fe.doe.gov/education/energylessons/coal/coal_history.html

Here's a 3-page article on coal and what else is made with it.

Do you realize if you take away fossil fuels, you will have to give up ALL PLASTIC PRODUCTS? That means all fiberglass products like car bodies, food and drink containers things made from iron and steel, AND BBQ grills. Charcoal is made from coal. Take away coal and oil and you would have to go to wood for outdoor cooling, but what would you do about the other products?

Until other methods are "fool-proof," there are no other options for the above.

There are options. Coal reserves are diminishing even if it was considered an - energy source for futureNM

since the 1990's. This is a consequence of less gov't regulation and not more. As long as the profit motive exists (and I'm not knocking it) we need to fund government regulators to be sure these companies stay on the straight and narrow. You can't keep cutting funding for regulatory agencies and expect the industry involved to police itself.

Virginia Says No To Requiring Health InsuranceFeb 03, 2010
Virginia's Democratic-controlled state Senate passed measures Monday that would make it illegal to require individuals to purchase health insurance, a direct challenge to the party's efforts in Washington to reform health care.   But the action in Virginia, a state that backed Obama in 2008, could indicate that the president is failing to reassure members of his own party that current reform efforts remain worthwhile. The votes also suggest that Democrats on the state level fear ...

The companies would need to draw between $34.8 billion and $99.6 billion in U.S. Treasury aid under a “severely adverse” scenario, depending on how they treated assets used to offset taxes, the Federal Housing Finance Agency said in its report.
