In need of dental work but can't afford it

Posted: Oct 5, 2011

I am in desperate need of dental work but have absolutely no money. I need 12 crowns on top and 2 on the bottom. I don't have a job, and I don't have insurance. I have nobody to borrow from or to apply to one of those dental credit plans for me.

Do I have any solutions? Does Medicaid pay for dental work?

Hopefully someone give you advice... - sm

I have a friend in the same situation, and I hate it for him. If it were a hospital you (and him) were dealing with, I used to be a bill collector and could help, but I have no idea what to tell either of you when it comes to dental. I sincerely wish you well as I just went through a similar situation. Broke my front tooth, and thank goodness, I've seen the same dentist for 20-plus yrs so he "Band-Aided" me until my new insurance kicks in. If anyone has suggestions...

That just sucks, I'm so sorry. I myself am without benefit of healthcare at the moment, too.

I'm in California and I believe in this state Medicare (our version of Medicaid) will pay for only primitive dental work, such as extractions. I don't believe they do crowns or caps or anything of that nature, simply extract the problem tooth/teeth.

Have you tried Western Dental, if they have those in your area? I understand they're very payment friendly, sliding scale, etc., and have decent dentists running them.

Good luck to you!

Area dental college? - sm

Look up Community Health Services in the phone book (or County Health Service) and ask them if they know. Every now and then, I hear of some free services through a local college. Good luck.

why not get a job - and get some dental insurance

I know that is easier said than done, but if you need crowns, you have had dental issues for a while and had to have known this was coming.

I know that Medicaid only pays for extractions. So, unless you want to have all 14 teeth pulled, you will need to get some insurance, which means you need to get a job.

Wish you luck.

Jeeze, really? She probably does need to "get a job" but you definitely "need to get some training" in tact!!!!!!!!!!

I have a job and still can't afford insurance so I understand where she's coming from. Trying to find a dental school is also a great idea but here in Dallas even the prices there have risen and it's very expensive. Try and friend of a friend of a friend who knows a dentist who will work with you on payments, that's what I had to do.

Update On Dental ProblemAug 17, 2010
Well, I got through the whole bone graft procedure better than I thought I would thanks to an excellent dentist who made my whole face numb.  I didn't feel a thing.  It also helped that I thought of people less fortunate than myself who have to endure much worse on a daily basis.  If anyone ever has to deal with this I wish you luck and, take it from me, it is almost always worse in your own mind that it actually is in reality. ...

Opinions About Dental PracticeMar 12, 2013
Hello...A while ago I thought someone had started a thread about going to the dentist.  I was going to add on to it but couldn't find it, so I will start a new topic. My (former) dentist sends reminder letters to come in for your routine exam and cleaning, as many dentists do.  I really like him and I think he does a really good job, but the wording of the letters always puts me off, it's something like, "you worked hard for your benefits, come in and use your insurance befor ...

The plan, called Health Reform 2.0, would "improve coverage and extend care." That means making dental coverage universall ...

Abortion. Can We Really Afford To Be Wrong?Sep 05, 2012
My personal journey to an answer for this difficult question has been neither one of religious discovery nor a form of moral evolution.  It is this conclusion--which, while difficult to come to for me personally as a former pro-choice advocate, has been as inescapable as it has been wrenching: It isn't necessary to argue religion.  It isn't necessary to examine moral systems of thought.  From a purely scientific and medical standpoint, there is absolutely no point in th ...

Americans Have Insurance But Can’t Afford To Use ItMar 13, 2015
Although more Americans have health insurance coverage, 25 percent of non-elderly Americans don’t have enough liquid assets to cover the deductible on their health insurance plan, according to a new report from the Kaiser Family Foundation.  The report finds that many consumers don’t have the cash on hand to cover the cost of a mid-range deductible or $1,200 for an individual or $2,400 per family. High deductible health plans require that consumers cover their health car ...

I have three very close friends, two of whom I have known my whole life and one I've known since the sixth grade.  Whenever it's someone's b-day, the other three take her out to dinner.  We started doing this a couple of years ago.  It's sort of a girl's night out we do four times a year.  We go out to dinner and sit and talk forever.  Anyway, the friend I've known since 6th grade has all of sudden decided she wants to bring her husband ...
