In a similar vein as secondhand stuff..

Posted: May 18, 2011

My grandma had a saying -- Use it up, wear it out, make do, or do without.

I picked up a book called Living More With Less.  It's full of tips and stories from Mennonites.  I've changed a few of my ways due to what I've read. I still have a loooooong way to go.  Right now I'm working on paring down my wardrobe.  If I got rid of the things I rarely wear, or never wear, or only wear because my favorite things are dirty, I'd have so much more room from not having overflowing laundry baskets all over the place.

I wore the same pair of jeans every day for just under two weeks one time, just to see how long I could go before they needed washing.  Using that method, couldn't you just imagine how much less clothing you'd need? I've done the same thing with shirts.  That's a little harder.  Pet hair seems to stick better to fabrics other than denim.  Two weeks is a little extreme, I know, but we work at home. Who cares?!

Kids get away with wearing their favorite outfits for weeks, why not adults?

Good idea! I'll look for that book. - Living more, too.

For the last couple of years I've been paring down my belongings. I was motivated after having to clear out my mother's things to help her get around her house. She's not quite as bad as the people you see on Hoarders, but she could easily get that bad. I just don't want to leave a mess like that when I'm gone. I started with my closets, and I got rid of everything that I don't wear or can't fit into. What a relief! I also started to wear my clothing until it actually needed laundering. That led to installing a clothesline in the yard and in the basement. Now I rarely use my dryer, and I am seeing savings in our utility bills. Next, I made a resolution to not waste food. That led to a clean 'fridge and a vegetable garden in the backyard. I also started eating better and lost 40 pounds! Now I need a few news clothes, but that's okay. I won't be buying more than I need.

That's great! - Shirl

They also put out a More with Less Cookbook.

Even with all of my clothes cleared out, I'll still have a huge amount of craft things. I can't part with them. I have too many interests. My plan for that is to build shelves with clear storage boxes labeled with the contents.

My fiance was horrible about leftovers. He'd throw away uneaten parts of steak. And forget about doggie bags; he says the food is meant to be enjoyed in the restaurant. But then he lost his 65K/year job. Need I say more? LOL

Why I Love Secondhand Clothing! Jun 03, 2011
I just got back from a highly successful clothes-shopping spree at "Thrift Town",  our fabulous local thrift store.  After I got home, and was washing, drying, ironing and hanging up my newfound treasures, I got to thinking about shopping at secondhand stores, and why I don't feel so "poor" when I do: For one, there's no "new-clothes stigma".  Now I know, new clothes ARE wonderful.  But for a strapped-for-cash MT like me, on those rare occasions that I d ...

I'm hoping someone on this board will have had, or know someone who has had, vein ablation therapy, also called EVLT and EVLA.  It's done in the doctor's office under Versed twilight sedation and local numbing medicine in each incision on the leg.  I have chronic venous insufficiency, which has, over the past year, taken a toll on my life.  I have constant aching pain in both calves every waking moment.  The pain even wakes me in up from sleep.  Both ankle ...

Obama's Border Plan Looks Similar To Bush'sMay 26, 2010
Another time O is mimicking something Bush did. For how much he speaks against Bush, it's unbelieveable that he is implementing things Bush did. Bush haters should be really upset over this.   PHOENIX – President Barack Obama's plan to send as many as 1,200 National Guard troops to the US-Mexico border appears to be a scaled-down version of the border security approach championed by his predecessor. The 6,000 troops who were sent by President George W. Bush to the bo ...

Hundreds 100-300 Planning Attacks Similar To Crotch Bomber.Dec 29, 2009
Hundreds of Al Qaeda militants are planning terror attacks from Yemen, the country's foreign minister said Tuesday. Abu Bakr al-Qirbi appealed for more help from the international community to help train and equip counter-terrorist forces. His plea came after an Al Qaeda group based in Yemen claimed responsibility for the failed Christmas Day airliner bomb plot. Anyone Heard Of This Stuff?Jun 18, 2013
I just moved into a new place a couple of months ago and haven't really gotten to know any of my neighbors except for a casual wave or "hello."
