Help - I just tweaked my back

Sitting here at the computer I just bent over to scratch my ankle and when I sat back up had excruiating pain. It's going across the back almost in a straight line. My hips hurt. Hurts to stand up and I can't bend over. Took 2 Aleve and using a heating pad. Is there anything else I can do to help it get back to normal?

[ In Reply To ..]Hold on to anything you can think of the wall, a chair, the door jam and stretch your back every way you can think. Hold the each stretch for 15-20 seconds. This always works for me.

I'd tank up on antiinflamatories, take a gulp or two of whiskey (again, me personally here) and hit the shower and let the hot water beat on my back for as long as possible. Getting out of bed in the morning is probably going to be the worst--maybe grab some extra pillows if you have them to put between your knees if you're a side sleeper or just jam them around you until you find a position of comfort...well, as comfortable as you can be like this :(
They say to alternate ice with heat for back spasms, if indeed this is what it is, but I just use whatever I find comfortable.

[ In Reply To ..]Could be anything from muscle sprain/strain to a pinched nerve, herniated disk, DJD/DDD, spinal stenosis, etc. If this has never happened before, it's probably sprain/strain, and a muscle relaxant would help.
In the meantime, take 800 mg of ibuprofen (with food) every 4-6 hours for 48 to 72 hours. While you're doing that, try to take a very warm bath 2-3x a day (remain in water for at least 15-20 minutes). Do pelvic tilts while you're in there, once every couple of minutes. When not bathing, alternate between heat and ice every hour.
If no improvement in 3 days, see your MD. You may need an MRI.
