Just back from the polls where it took

Posted: Nov 2, 2012

27 booths were overwhelmed by what poll workers were calling record-breaking early voter turnouts for a blue precinct in a red state (Harris County/Houston).  Folks were really upbeat despite the long wait, joking and making the best of it.  Thoroughly enjoyed the day and the relief to know it's a done deal until 2014.  Obama/Biden 2012.

;

So glad to hear of a large turnout. - Mail-in voter.

It annoys me when I read about low voter turnout during elections, and do not get me started when it is in my state where it is mail-in vote only. I understand missing here or there, but not long ago in my state, for local offices only 40% of registered voters voted. How sad is that? BTW, I really miss the experience of going to polls. Call me old fashioned.

Earlier in the summer, they were predicting - 1.2 out of a little over 2.0 million

[ In Reply To ..]
registered voters in Harris County would show up (60% turnout). As of yesterday, 706,322 had either voted early or return their mail-ins. When today's numbers are added in it should top 800,000. Today is the last day of early voting in Harris County.

In 2008, not quite 40% of the ultimate total who voted in the election did so during early voting. We are now at around 66% of the numbers predicted in June, so it would appear we are on course to exceed the original 1.2 million by significant numbers, and have already broken 2008 records.

Personally, I think our GOP-dominated state legislature and Governor Big Hair's legendary efforts to suppress (which failed in the end, thanks to federal oversight of our elections process behind historic corruption and blatant gerrymandering), and well publicized similar national GOP agendas, have backfired on them. I'm not saying it's enough to turn our red state blue, at least not just yet, but irreversible demographic shifts are going to take care of that problem in time. I just hope I live to see it, since I spent the first half of my life as a happy camper in the bluest of the blues....despite Texan's claims to the contrary, 39 democrat governors, 6 GOP, 1 Unionist (!) and 1 independent.

I mailed mine in a couple days ago - Fanatical Hypocrite

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm relieved to have a bit of that weight lifted. In a couple days, we'll all be following the 2016 campaign, which I'm sure will start hours after the polls close. I'm hoping the GOP ticket for 2016 will be Santorum/Gingrich. It's time to bring back traditional Christian values to the moon. Or maybe Sarah Palin/Michele Bachmann. Stupid and crazy meets... well stupid and crazy.

I just cheered myself up about a potential Romney presidency. Wow.

If the president gets a second term - who do you think

[ In Reply To ..]
should run against S/G or stupid and crazy squared? I'm not all that convinced it'll be Clinton, and I think Joe Biden is getting a bit long in the tooth to be "the One." Any ideas?

Even the pugs are saying R/R going to lose. - Keeping my fingers crossed.

Sneaky pugs could still steal it though.

I've been wondering that too - Fanatical Hypocrite

After Bill Clinton's speech at the convention, I sort of wanted to repeal the 22nd amendment so we could have the Clinton years all over again.

It's hard to tell who among the current Democratic Party might have a chance. I agree that Biden is too long in the tooth. Hillary's career I think is doomed. She doesn't really have the charisma anymore and of course the right hates her with a passion.

Most of the Democratic stars have fallen unfortunately and the rest are getting older. In fact, I'm having trouble thinking of that many Democrats in general. Probably a good sign. I remember a lot more Republicans because of all the scandals.

The only one I know that has the name recognition, energy and interest in running would be Howard Dean. I don't think he can win though. He's failed too many times and he has a reputation for being too energetic at times.

Of course Chuck Norris said if Obama wins we'll have a thousand years of darkness, so I guess we'll all be more concerned about finding flashlights then electing the next guy. And after a thousand years, maybe I'll be ready to vote Republican. Maybe.

Maybe Romney will be a Democrat by 2016.
Next Democrat.... - (see message)

....Cory Booker, perhaps? From what I hear, he's been a real-life superhero out there in New Jersey! :-) Not too long ago, he rescued someone from a burning structure; and now, he's gotten tweets from people who needed help because of the storm, and he'd tweet back that he was not too far away and would be there to help. Now that's a politician I could love!
Sure. There are lots of good guys we've heard little - of so far. Disagree about Hillary. She
[ In Reply To ..]
may or may not run, but her biggest negative is her age.

As for the right hating her, what's new about that? SHE was our first black first lady, after all. Remember her first White House Christmas and the story they circulated that she and Bill had decorated the tree with condoms?

This seemingly incurable nastiness has been with us like gravity--it's just there. If she retired, they'll just make someone else a focus of their hate. On the plus side, it's clear that most conservatives are finally distancing themselves from them and their dreadful influence definitely on the decline. The bilious won't go away, but two GOP presidential candidates going down for pandering to them is going to require even more change on the right than we've seen so far.
We dems have so many real heroes to choose from - I'm hoping in the next 4

years we will see Tammy Duckworth rise to the occasion.

I didn't know Hillary was black. LOL

(I really do know what you mean in the above sentence. You just got too anxious posting and editing, like we all do.)

BTW, thanks for the Christmas story. Never heard that one before. Do you think I will still be able to find that online? Would love to read about it.

French Far Right Looks For Gains In Regional PollsMar 22, 2015
France's National Front, one of the most powerful populist far right parties in Europe, eyed significant gains against President Francois Hollande's ruling socialists in regional elections Sunday. For the National Front, Sunday was a chance to punish the Socialists and get up a head of steam for presidential elections in 2017 that ...
