Extremely tired all the time

Posted: Feb 3, 2014

I've always had an average amount of energy but lately I literally feel as if I am wading through water. I actually feel weighted down. I never used to be able to sleep anywhere but in bed, but I notice I have been nodding off in my chair even though I sleep well at night. I don't snore or have apnea. (It's been really cold here, and I find the nodding off occurs in my recliner when I have a blanket on me.)  My diet isn't that unhealthy, but it is pretty monotonous. I find myself fixing the same foods day after day. Does anyone have any suggestions for foods that might make me feel a little bit more energetic? I just feel like if I could get one day where I feel energetic I could get back to normal.

maybe you need some blood work to check your counts. Are you on new meds? Have new stresses? Gained or lost weight? Going into hiberation?

Agree, talk to doc - see msg pls

It is always good to try to eat healthier, but you could have a condition like anemia, liver trouble, autoimmune trouble, hidden depression, an asymptomatic UTI, etc.

I wouldn't treat yourself as having anything other than what some blood work might show.

I'm also wondering how you know if you have sleep apnea or not. There's not always snoring involved. The only way you would know is to have someone observe you (like a spouse) while you're sleeping to see if your chest stops rising at intervals. This would have to be done for a long period of time in a given night, because apnea doesn't necessarily happen only in the first hour of sleep.

So, do what you can to change any unhealthy habits, and meanwhile, get that blood work and physical examination. If it's been more than a year, then for sure you're due. If it's less than that, you still need to find out what's going on from a qualified medical practitioner.

May be something, may be nothing.

I get this way every January and February, by March it starts to lift as I begin to anticipate spring and it's like I can sort of see the light at the end of the tunnel. I HATE winter. If you live up north, that could be part of the problem. I've had all my blood work done and it was FANTASTIC. Just changing my diet took my triglycerides from 400 to 134. I don't have a thyroid so I'm very hot AND cold intolerant. In the winter I find myself staying in and becoming more and more isolated. I don't want to do anything and I don't want to go anywhere. It affects all of my motivation even at work. If you go to the doc ask about SADD (seasonal affective disorder). I've always sworn that I have it, but I just try to wait out Jan/Feb which are my worst months! Good luck!

I felt that way for a long time and finally had blood work which showed extremely low vitamin D levels. After a few months on vitamin D supplements I see an improvement.

i was at the doctor 2 weeks ago for my yearly checkup and mentioned this tiredness. He seemed unconcerned and mentioned how tired *he* always is. His nurse did order blood work since it had been a while and everything checked out fine. I have had my thyroid checked at least 5 times and always okay, though I know someone with thyroid disease who said there are more specific tests than the standard thyroid panel. I don't believe I have apnea (though only husband to observe, not a sleep lab). Once I get doing something I'm okay (yesterday scrubbed kitchen floor on hands and knees, cleaned out the fridge), but it's just that it seems to take so much effort to move, like gravity is stronger than it used to be [!]. Based on a few things in the past, I'm wondering if it does have something to do with the time of year. Never really thought of it before but I seem to remember some incidents of real drowsiness a long time ago that happened in the spring--though we're a long way off from spring. I'm thinking of trying to eat healthier and getting some scheduled exercise on the treadmill every day to see if that helps. Thanks for your advice.

Just wondering if you've considered carbon monoxide levels. During the winter months, with all the windows closed, is it possible that you need to air out your house?

I've experienced some of what you describe...feeling like I'm walking through water, like fighting gravity just to walk. I'm experimenting with dietary changes (like starting probiotics and eliminating refined sugar), but don't know yet if this will make a difference.
I was thinking the same thing about the CO level - in the house
[ In Reply To ..]
It might be a good idea to check it out. If you have a CO detector, make sure it's working properly and the batteries are still good.
Hmmm - We have 1 detector
[ In Reply To ..]
It's a smoke detector/carbon monoxide detector in the basement by the furnace and it seems to be okay. We live in a 3-story Victorian with hardly any insulation and old wavy glass in the windows, and the wind sometimes blows my hair a bit when I stand in front of them (and they're closed). A carpenter who did some work for us said our house is so not-weather-proofed that he could run his truck inside and still be safe from carbon monoxide. One thing I think about is the old gas lines in the house back from before electricity was put in. I've wondered if they could have something to do with this, but I've been told there's no gas source any more so it's impossible. But what if there is some residual gas in a capped off line? Of course after 25 years you'd think something would have happened by now if it was going to happen, but a couple of old gas jets still remain and one of them is in the room where I get the most sleepy (TV room with recliner). Though maybe the boring things on TV are putting me to sleep.

Could be seasonal affective disorder. If so, a bright light, such as NatureBright Therapy and Ion Lamp at about $70 on Amazon.com will help tremendously. As your doctor. My psychiatrist recommended it to me and it helped a lot (and I live in Phoenix!).

You are partially hibernating. sm - Care Bear

It's normal in cold weather. Sleep, eat and enjoy it. Spring is coming.

Extremely Proud To Be A Democrat This MorningJul 26, 2016
The contrast between that awful hate-filled RNC and the DNC cannot be doubted. The WILLING and great musicians performing, the great speech of Sarah Silverman - I'm with her by the way, "Bernie or Bust people, you're being ridiculous." Michelle Obama gave a truly brilliant speech, really mainly by talking about her children growing up in the White House. All Trump could do was tweet away and froth at the mouth wherever he was with his pitiful little diatribes, exposing the small, mea ...

Anybody Have Any Suggestions For A Healing Lip Balm For Extremely Chapped Lips?Jan 04, 2014
I never used to have problems with chapped lips.  I generally wear makeup everyday and always have something on my lips in the way of lipstick, lip gloss, chapstick.  However, in the last few years, every single winter I have had a problem with extremely chapped lips and cold sores.  I know the cold sores are caused by stress, but it seems every winter my lips start to get dry and no amount of chapstick will keep them moist and then I develop what I call "my Christmas herpes" whic ...

So Tired.Dec 17, 2012
I'm late to the gun debate on the boards, because I needed time to calm down after Friday's tragedy.  I didn't want to come here all emotional and start swiping at people and coming up with totally unrealistic expectations of our country regarding gun control.  But the more I thought about it, the more I realized how completely saturated we are with guns. I grew up with guns, in a house practically stuffed to the brim with them. My family are paranoid "survivalists." &n ...

I'm So Tired Of The Tax Debate!May 14, 2010
Tax the rich more....tax the poor less, etc.  It is my opinion that if you tax the rich more, it won't help that much considering there are so many loopholes in the tax code that I'm sure the rich will find a way to get out of paying more taxes.  Why don't we just do a flat tax.  That will eliminate the loopholes.  Simple and easy...probably why they won't do it though.  They need something confusing so the crooks in the world can get out of paying ta ...

Do You Ever Have Days Where You Are So Tired You Feb 20, 2016
Get you out of bed?? I mean seriously, deep down severe fatigue?? I am having a day like that today.  I haven't felt like this in a long time.  It used to happen more frequently, a few times a year.  When my kids were younger I would lay in bed and think my kids would come home from school with me lying in bed and unable to get up.  But eventually I would be able to rouse from my fatigue and walk to the kitchen and get a cold beverage.  I think for me it is hormonal ...

Hair Dye What To Buy Tired Of ColorsilkDec 03, 2009
