Does anyone have any suggestions to make this easier? I am perimenopausal and I'm having terrible headaches each month. I am also having trouble sleeping. The mood swings are so bad that I can't even stand myself!! What can I try to lessen these symptoms? I am trying to find something natural that won't cause too many side effects.

I know what helped me....sm - MT

and it's as natural as you can get but the very suggestion enrages many ladies as it takes change...something the majority fights with all their will. ;)

Are you saying to just let nature - take its course?

[ In Reply To ..]
I'm trying to understand your reply but obviously my brain has been affected, too! Also, do the symptoms go away when it is over? I guess they do. Otherwise, we would have a bunch of crazy old ladies running around!

No, I'm not saying that at all...sm - MT

I'm saying I made changes in my life, specifically diet changes. My mother and 2 sisters never did and they had raging symptoms. I cut out foods containing hormones and never had a problem with menopause...not one. Cutting out certain foods is what many refuse to do and get irate at the mere mention claiming there's no truth to it. It worked for me and I'm all the healthier for it. I can't say if the symptoms will go away when it's over. For some, menopause lingers for years. I never had any symptoms to begin with because I made dietary changes 10 years before I went through menopause simply because I wanted to be healthier. The only noticeable event for me was cessation of flow. No headaches, night sweats, insomnia, mood swings, weight gain...nothing.
Thank you - sm

I will definitely read up on that. If nothing else, it is a healthier way of life. It's pretty impressive that you sailed right through it without having to take medication or some other harmful thing to deal with it. Thanks again for your advice.
what dietary changes did you make - curious

I am 40 now, and think I would like to change my whole dietary lifestyle as well. What did you do?
I gave up....sm - MT
[ In Reply To ..]
most meat. I only eat a little salmon now maybe twice a week. I gave up ALL dairy and that was the best thing I ever did. I had sinus congestion for 28 years and that resolved after giving up dairy. That was the hardest thing for me because I loved dairy but I feel so much better now. I eat lots of fruit, vegetables, beans, a few nuts and yes, the dreaded potato and all starchy vegetables. I subsist on mostly plant foods. I made the change when I was 48 and went through menopause at 55 without a single problem. I'm now 60. And I do exercise every day. Also, don't use drugs, even prescription. I believe the body can heal itself without that kind of toxic intervention. That's why I'm an MT. I prefer to stay away from doctors. I don't try to influence others, not even my family (even though they need it the most...they are all pretty sick) because I still need a job. I don't really worry much because people are so addicted to their bad habits, they usually ignore what I have to say but there are doctors out there who are finally catching on and willing to tell the truth. Good luck with making changes. I sincerely hope you succeed. It takes a person who really cares about their health to make the effort.

Sometimes SSRI's help. I was on one anyway for - depression, & had NO symptoms at all - sm

when I went through menopause. Breezed right through it.

Unfortunately, nothing is guaranteed to be side effect free - but see message

I do agree with the prior poster who said change your diet. It can be very effective.

I started having an extremely heavy flow at 43 and became anemic. I had very uncomfortable cycles and had to take an anti-inflammatory and alprazolam for the mood swings. I swear, I believe I could have picked up a dresser and thrown it. Cycles like clock-work until age 46. Had a regular cycle one month - and then absolutely nothing since then.

Now the hot flashes started at 43 and tapered completely off at about 50, toward the end they were mostly at night. I actually kind of got used to them. It was much better than what I had been through when I was having them. It's funny, when my cycles stopped, I never had another pain, mood swing, fatigue, discomfort, or low hemoglobin. When my cycles stopped, I never took another medication.

Take Estradiol 1 mg. A 3-month supply is $10.00. - works like a charm

My dose is .25 mg q.d. of estradiol - kr

[ In Reply To ..]
and it works like a charm for me, too. Takes the edge right off. I can live with the occasional hot flash at the end of the 24-hr. period before the next dose.

I had a TAH/BSO so I am on a higher dose. It really does - take the edge off

[ In Reply To ..]
like you said. It is good to know the lower dosages work well too.

Walk, walk, walk - wheres_my_job

[ In Reply To ..]
walk, dance, kickboxing, switch up - stay active - I have trouble sleeping, but that has more to do with my living situation / privacy issues (yes, it's wonderful to have time when it's just me awake)....

I'm not having any mood swings, BUT stress, job hunting, etc get to me - it's all too much, way too much to handle. So, I handle it by getting sick - oh yeah nasty head cold that won't go away!

As far as something natural, have you tried the "romance pill" - yes, that will definitely help things :) Doesn't a massage sound good, and some of those fake-y flickering candles you can get?

Next time I get paid (hellooooo.....when will that be I wonder), I'm getting some of those fake-y flickering candles.

Thank you all - sm

I am going to try some of these suggestions. I did read up on dietary changes and some of them are easy enough to do such as cutting out salt and sugar. They also say to eat more legumes, peas and beans and less red meat. That will be a little harder because I love steak and hamburgers but hate peas! We'll see how it goes.

lo-dose Effexor - only thing that helped

[ In Reply To ..]
Ate right, exercised, tried every natural and synthetic medication. Nothing worked. Finally did some additional reading and found Effexor and/or gabapentin may work for some people. My doc was willing to try Effexor and it was the first good sleep I got in 4 years.

Also had blood test and am hypothyroid. With correction, that helped quite a bit, too.

Melatonin does help me sleep, but it also gives me a headache. If you take care of the sleep, the fuzzy thinking will go away maybe. Also, cut back on wheat and try more gluten-free. Even beer gives me a headache, but hard cider gives a good effect. :-)

DVR QuestionsFeb 19, 2011
These are probably stupid questions but I don't know anyone who has a DVR so I thought I'd come here to ask about it. We are thinking of getting a DVR service so we can quit the VHS taping merry-go-round, etc. Before I sign up, though, I'd like to know something about it from someone who's not trying to sell it to me! I understand that basically you can put in the name of a show you want it to record, and any time that show is aired it will record. Is that correct? So ...

What Questions To AskJun 15, 2011
I am starting to look at houses (first time for me).  For people who own their own homes, what kinds of questions do you ask.  What are things you look at when you do house hunting.  I can look at the places and know whether it will suit us, but unsure if there are specific things I should be asking or looking at.  Wanted to get some opinons. ...

ObamaCare QuestionsMar 21, 2010
1)  If this bill is so wonderful, then why have Obama and Pelosi resorted to bribes, threats, and arm-twisting to get the votes?  The "compassionate" Demonrats should be falling all over themselves to support it.   (This one's rheotorical; their actions speak for themselves.) 2)  If this bill is so great, why don't members of Congress volunteer to be the guinea pigs so we can all see how it works?  (ANSWER:  Because the "elites" [political class ...

Some Questions About HPV. Any InformationDec 01, 2015
I am writing this with the full knowledge of my dear friend who just discovered about a month ago she has HPV. I told her I would ask other MTs who might have a little information about this. First of all, she is telling me she does not fully understand her physician, language barrier there and when asking questions she was told she was exaggerating the issue! She is a person who is very involved in her church yet I doubt she has been able to talk with someone there, very embarrassed about her s ...

General Questions On FlexibilityApr 05, 2010
I have recently been inquiring about a new career in MT.  I learned of this website and have been reading feverishly to become as informed as possible.  My question is this (which is one, of many!):  Is it flexible enough to do on a basis around a first and primary job that requires travel.  On the days that I'm home (which could be for 2-5 days in a row before traveling again) I would have all day dedicated to sitting at the computer and getting work done.  This i ...

What Questions Would You Ask An Accountant Before Becoming A Client?May 10, 2011
I've had it with ours. We don't get full copies of our filings back and he never files until the very last day if we owe taxes. He e-files through some company. Yesterday, I received a letter from the IRS that WE DIDN'T FILE FOR 2009! We certainly did but we can't remember how much we had to pay the IRS, if any. We do have checks for local and state taxes paid last year, but not federal. All I get his answering machine when I called (twice). I don't want to call the IRS ...

In Answer To SM's Questions About H.R. 1406May 10, 2013
I didn’t want the answers buried because the original post is pretty far down the page.   You don't HAVE to take the compensatory option. You volunteer for it. If you want your OT paid in cash the week you work it, then so be it.   You said: "One other thing I'm not finding or maybe it's there and I don't understand the legal jargon: Is the OT that is converted into PTO time and a half? Do I get a half hour extra for every hour of OT?"   Yes, that&# ...

Tech-type QuestionsJul 16, 2016
I posted earflier about how my local cable TV/internet/telephone company started blocking TV channels unless you rent a "box" from them.  I lost my temper and broke my bundle.  I cancelled TV and phone, ordered Direct TV, moved my phone # to a tracfone, and left internet intact because it's fast and high quality. It turns out that Direct TV couldn't get a "line of sight" to their satellite and so couldn't install.  I called Dish Network, and they're supposed t ...

Bread Making QuestionsJul 17, 2014
Years ago I loved to make bread and have several favorite recipes. I'm going to give up and get a bread maker.  I see they come with recipes, but I cannot tell if you can use your own recipes in them.  Does anyone have any experience with this.  One of my favorites is a receipe for Pioneer Bread which uses some corn meal.  It is not heavy like rye, which I understand does not work well in machines. Any advice on this would be appreciated.  I am becoming alarmed ab ...

Perimenopause Questions - Looking For NaturalNov 01, 2014
Been visiting many different sites regarding perimenopause.  That is what I have.  While I don't have all the systems I do have 95% of them (luckily no hot flashes or night sweats though).  What really is getting to me is urinary incontinence.  It doesn't matter how much I try and hold it until I can make it to the bathroom, it doesn't work.  Been looking up what vitamins I should be taking to help control some of the symptoms (not going to go on rx meds) ...

Toaster Oven QuestionsJan 01, 2016
Does anyone own a toaster oven.  Our oven broke and is cheaper to buy a toaster oven than fix ours.  The only thing we really cook in the oven is small stuff (roast a chicken, cookies, brownies, melt cheese on our sandwiches and things like that).  No huge turkeys or whatever. So I'm looking at toaster ovens, at least a 6 slice toaster.  Does anyone have any recommendations or ones to stay away from.  We went to target and some were flimsy.  We are looking at ...

Divorce Questions, Advice AppreciatedJan 15, 2012
I will be married 32 years next month and never seriously considered divorcing my husband although in the past we did talk about it a couple times during rough times.  I thought we came through everything and had a stable and successful marriage.  However, my husband has interests I don't share, such as drinking, partying, poker, hanging out with his friends, etc.  Over time I came to accept and expect that and just figured he had a bit of a Peter Pan syndrome where he never ...

I Have 2 Questions About An Ortho Exam And DisabilityNov 28, 2011
1)  I had a GAU evaluation (for general assistance in WA state) earlier this year and am now up for an ABD eval. (Aged, Blind, and Disabled assistance).  The GAU examiner seemed to want to tank the exam and I found she lied in the report with respect to the ortho portion. I'm planning a letter to DSHS, her clinic's Director, and possibly the State Board. I had a later eval. at another clinic by a doctor who found a source of my ortho problem and thinks I need an MRI; also, I ...

Do Any Tea Party Supporters Know The Answers To These Questions?Feb 05, 2010
I have the same questions. http://voices.kansascity.com/node/7499"...To much of the country, Tea Party supporters look like a bunch of whiners -- over taxes, health care, the federal government, America's future. So that's why it's important for the people attending the ongoing Tea Party convention in Nashville to establish a more positive direction for their fledgling movement. With Sarah Palin as a keynote speaker on Saturday, it's obvious this group won't be coming out ...

Chapter 13 Bankruptcy. Questions For Anyone Who Has Filed It Please. SmJul 27, 2011
We have been in chapter 13 for a year.  Our payment keeps going up.  However, I found some interesting information from the IRS for expense list that my lawyer did not include in our expenses and we have for expenses.  Has anyone dealt with this?  If so, what could you include in expenses?  Did your lawyer include these expenses later?  Sorry to sound stupid, but just trying to get some help.  Believe me, we did not want to file but had no option. ...

Questions About Insurance And Crappy Diagnosis, Etc.Jul 30, 2010
Hi, Just wondering if anyone can give me a bit of info (since I have much better luck on message boards than I do trying to go directly to any source). ; ) To the point, I had not been to a doctor in several years.  I recently went to a gynecologist (was actually a NP) and then she referred me on to an IM doc.  They both ignored what I really wanted to focus on (hormones - perimenopausal and a slew of what I discovered to be thyroid symptoms I had been having for 12 years or so).&nbs ...

Anyone Here Raise Chickens? Have Lots Of QuestionsJun 02, 2010
I would love to raise some chickens but DH is against it. He hates them, says they're ugly, doesn't like eating chicken, and hates those "slimy eggs,"  hasn't eaten one in over 50 years, but I'm the opposite.  Do you think I can convince him to let me raise a few? Questions For Parents With Small ChildrenJun 20, 2011
Do you children (maybe around 4 years old) cry a lot?  We have a neighbor who has a little girl and she is always crying - and I mean always.  I don't think we've ever heard longer than a half hour without her crying.  She's playing with other kids and she cries, she's in the swimming pool and she's crying, eating crying, etc, etc.  Since I never had kids or friends who had kids I don't know if this is normal.  Just was curious. ...

CNN Caught Handed Out Questions To The Audience ToFeb 08, 2017
with Bernie Sanders. Sanders' answer to everything was single payer, single payer, single payer (translation, taxpayer). I saw about 10 minutes of it. I was quite surprised to see a lady from Texas allowed to ask Bern questions about Obamacare screwing her family’s coverage and her business. Bernie gave his usual socialist lines. Cruz was great. Ted was his usual strong, polished. well prepared self, but Bernie was no slouch. He actually admitted the Democrat Party is owned by ...

Ruth Marcus: 13 Questions To Ask HillaryMar 07, 2015
It's great that Hillary Clinton has asked the State Department to release her official emails. Still, belated disclosure isn't going to make the story go away; it doesn't deal with questions about why Clinton decided to proceed in this seemingly secretive direction despite government regulations that at the very least required she take steps to ensure the emails were duly transferred to official logs. Following is a list of questions that I think are reasonable to ask Clinton to ...

How Do You Answer A Nosy Friend's Questions?May 13, 2015
I have a very dear friend of nearly 40 years and I have not one thing negative to say about her except that she asks what I think are inappropriate questions. For example, without fail, she will always ask the price of a big ticket item. She doesn't broadcast the news, she just wants to know for whatever reason. I am getting together with her soon and know she will ask the price of something BIG that I bought. She has no idea how long I saved and what I sacrificed to do this. Does anyone ha ...
