DVR questions

These are probably stupid questions but I don't know anyone who has a DVR so I thought I'd come here to ask about it. We are thinking of getting a DVR service so we can quit the VHS taping merry-go-round, etc. Before I sign up, though, I'd like to know something about it from someone who's not trying to sell it to me! I understand that basically you can put in the name of a show you want it to record, and any time that show is aired it will record. Is that correct? So let's say I put in "Criminal Minds" - that means it will record both the new episode on its regular night as well as if they rerun an ep on Saturday night? Is it the version of the show that my local station is broadcasting or does it come from the network feed - for instance, if there's an accident on the local highway & the local station cuts in to programming for 20 mins to report on it, do I get that 20 mins of news or the 20 mins of the actual show? Can you rewind, pause, fast-forward a recording? With kids in the house, that's an important feature! Do you get close-captions (if provided to begin with)? [ In Reply To ..]I ordered a DVR box from them. Basically, using your remote, you just push guide and the list of channels comes up. You can scroll through until you find what you want to record and then push the buttons for that to record. For instance, Criminal Minds, here it is channel 9, I push the guide, scroll to channel 9, hit certain buttons, and it is set to record. You also have the option of setting up a series recording, and it will record only new or new and repeats. I was so relieved not to have to use the tapes to record stuff. It is much much better with the DVR. Hope this helps.

[ In Reply To ..]Yes, you can watch one show and record another. You can even record two shows at once, but if you do that you can't watch anything else. I love my DVR. Don't know what I would do without it. I tape my soap GH and anything else that I can't seem to find time to watch. Well worth the money.

[ In Reply To ..]Unfortunately, you cannot record 2 shows and watch another, which is a problem I have when there are 3 things on I want to record at the same time. You can record 2 but you have to have your channel on one of them. What I do when I want to record 2 but don't want to watch either at the time is watch something that I have already recorded. That way, 2 of my shows are recording but I am not watching them at that time. The reason I do this is because I work evenings and if something is on I really want to see, I cannot work and pay attention to it at the same time so this is what I do to get around that. I hope this doesn't sound confusing to you. It makes perfect sense to me, of course. :)

And yes, it is your local broadcasting, unless it's a show that airs on a cable also, so if there's breaking news, it'll be in your recording.
Yes, you can pause, rewind, fast forward etc. Once you go DVR, it's hard to go back. And I have three DVR boxes in my house so I can record six different programs at one time if I want to...I know...crazy, but I just like having the pause and rewind features on all the TVs that I watch. You get used to it.
