moving with acquired stray cat

My dog died a month ago. Simultaneously my son and his girlfriend befriended and brought a stray cat into the house. He's neutered, clipped ear. I think he may have been plucked off the street by a good person, fixed, and then dropped in this quaint, safe townhome community. He is a sweet boy and fills the void of having just lost my dog of 10 years.

So, my question is... The cat comes and goes as he pleases. He stays in the house more than not, but I have to move. Depending on where I move, he may or may not have that liberty. Even if he is able to go out once in a while, will he get lost? Should I just not let him out? He's so happy here, I almost feel guilty, but I have no choice about moving and I just can't leave him.

I know we shouldn't let our pets out no matter what, but with a "recovering" stray, I think it's their nature to have that roaming instinct, and considering he's fixed and he is very car savy since he pretty much lived/lives in a parking lot, I can't help but not want to consider trying to let him out.

BTW, the first place on my list is a similar townhome/apartment setting with the main street being very far from the house.

It's safer for cats to be indoor cats. They don't have to contend with all the inherent dangers they encounter outside - disease, injury, etc. He'll adjust and be grateful to have food, water, shelter and love. Thank you for taking him with you.

Years ago we took in a stray cat and she is now an indoor cat - They really do adapt

Why don't your son and his girlfriend, who "acquired" this cat take it to their home? Do you all live together? Did they ask if they could bring an animal to your home?

If you've taking him as yours, then of course take him with you. He'll learn to live indoors all the time, but check with your landlord and make sure animals are allowed.

If you are able to take him with you, please do. Outdoor cats do adapt to life indoors. Life on the streets is rough for cats as they have to find food, deal with other animals and other dangers. You probably also know how many "cat haters" there are in this world who might use a trap or other means to do him harm. I had a similar situation a few years ago with a lovely Siamese mix who found herself homeless through no fault of her own and "adopted" me. I had to move and knew I couldn't take her with me so found her a new home where she is happy. If you can't take the cat, ask your son to take him back or try and find him a home. Even the animal shelter would be safer than the streets, many of them are "no kill shelters" with high adoption rates. A lot of people take foster pets too, you do have quite a few options.

I would not be surprised at all if that cat sensed that you had suffered a loss in your family. I have heard many times that cats choose their owners, instead of the other way around. Good luck and best wishes.

Guess I should have made it more clear that my son and his GF live here. They are in college, and will live with me for a couple months to a year.

I love the comment that animals sometimes sense a loss or sadness when the choose where they live.

I definitely will choose a pet-friendly place. I would have done that whether or not I had a pet, because... let's just say... they always find ME!

I want to move 2000 miles and have 2 cats. Do not want to subject them to air travel. I know the vet can provide a sedative, but I don't know what to expect from it.
