Anyone have experience with getting a stray cat fixed

Posted: Jun 27, 2012

We have a male stray we want to get neutered.  Has anyone ever worked with a stray cat and get this done for them?  Here is our situation (I am the poster below that asked about searching for movers).  So, our situation is we are going to be moving to a location four hours from us.  We have a stray male cat we have been caring for for the last 3 or 4 years.  He depends on us for food and a warm place to sleep at nights.  He eats here 2 times a day (sometimes more) and will eat like he's starved.  Sometimes he'll hang out in our yard, sleeping in our catnip garden :-).  He is such a sweet guy.  He now lets me pet him (a little - as in one finger touching his head very gently) :-)  His companion (a female cat) was the exact same way as him, but she warm up to us faster and now we can brush her and play with her, etc.

So, my question is this.  Has anyone ever had a stay cat fixed?  If so, what were they like afterwards.  I am trying to decide whether I want to try to cage him and get him fixed now or try and wait until the day we move, get him caged and bring him in while we are moving then come back for him the next day.  I would prefer the first way, but afraid if I take him in ahead of time he may never come to me again.  Moving and abandoning him is not an option.  Yes, I know he's a cat and different emotions than us, but the thought of him coming here expecting to get some food and jump in his chair he sleeps in to find everything empty, just about breaks my heart thinking about that.  I just can't and won't do it.

So, has anyone ever fixed a stray and did they ever get close to you again is what I'm wondering.

feral cat fixed - LuMa

I had a local service catch and neuter/spay 3 feral cats living in my backyard (I have 8 indoor only fixed kitties as well). The service kept them overnight after the surgery and gave them a rabies shot and "notched" their ears so that they could be identified as surgically sterilized. They recovered quickly and are doing fine. They come to the back door for breakfast every morning. I wish I could tame them and find them homes, but sadly, they are too wild. Have the kitty fixed, he'll do fine as long as he's kept overnight in a cage after the surgery.

neutering the "stray" cat - crazy cat lady

First and foremost, bless you for caring. You could almost say he's not a stray anymore, he has adopted you, he's still just a little aloof :-) At any rate, I've done trap, neuter return for years. The most obvious thing is that he has to be kept safe until he is completely out from anesthesia and fully functioning again. Every cat is different but I have found as a general rule they roam a lot less when they have been neutered. There are websites, Alley Cat Allies, Best Friends, etc,. where you can get lots of info regarding neutering, moving, etc., an outdoor kitty. Good luck! and thank you again for caring.

Thanks for your post and also LuMa too - sympathetic cat woman

I love cats. I just cannot stand to see any animal suffer or go hungry or be lonely. This guy is such a sweet heart. I call him Sweetie Boy. It took me almost a year or longer to get to this stage. I'm terrified of not being able to get close to him when it's time for us to move. His sister looks just like him. He got her pregnant and we have her 5 offspring. Everyone is spayed/neutered except him. Then I've got the fun of riding 4 hours in a car with them all LOL. We've got a place all picked out for them at our new destination. Now just getting them there and acclimated. Nobody here knows anything about them except "I see them walking around". Cannot just abandon him.

thanks, looking at the websites you mentioned too.

Sounds like my Tigger - MT

I feed some strays and there is 1 male I haven't had fixed yet, and he is so sweet, such a flirt, my Tigger. I'm trying to socialize him, not able to pet him yet, but I'm working on it. I would recommend getting Sweetie Boy fixed as soon as possible as it may take a little while for him to come back. I had my strays fixed a couple of summers ago and they were okay and close again after the surgery. I just trapped them the night before (so they would be npo) and took them the next morning, picked them up in the afternoon and released them the next morning. I used SNAP because it was close and cheap and I had a lot of cats to fix. They all did fine. Do you have a trap? I would put it out where he can see it and smell it and get used to it being around before you actually have to use it, and at the time of trapping use some smelly, oily fish in the trap, mackerel worked well for me. Where I live, there is a Feral Cat Coalition and the lady I spoke to was great in giving me these tips and helping me trap them. Good luck to you and thanks for caring!

I did the same thing - love all furry things

I was feeding 2 strays, but they were actually very socialized, or they really liked us, because we'd leave the door open and they'd come in and pretty much "tolerate" us. Black Cat (notched ear) was a little violent at first. He'd lash out for no reason. Brown Cat (bits and pieces intact) was just a sweetie.

When we moved, I trapped them both and moved them in. Only problem is, no outside anymore. I figured I'd need to get Brown Cat fixed, but he's just as pleased a punch to be inside all the time. Black Cat has become a plump, needy, spoiled indoor cat. Pouts when someone leaves. I call him a dog cat.

So... now I'm in this new place, a townhouse, I rent. Lease good for another 1-1/2 year. Problem is... I'm feeding about 5 to 7 ferals. All are notched ears. My community is really good about catch, fix, and release.

There is actually a BEAUTIFUL siamese cat, surprisingly with notched ear. I don't know if it's because of his breed or if he's been in a home maybe some time in the distant past, but he lets me pet him as long as I want, but it took about 6 months to get to this point. He's stepped in the house a few times, but still not that trusting yet. I also have Black and Brown Cat inside, so I'm being patient with my ultimate hope of bringing him in.

Brown Cat really has no interest or aggression toward him, but he'd run if he saw Black Cat. We are now at the point where they can be on opposite sides of the threshhold and both are comfortable with that. So I have hope!!! The Siamese is just exquisite. I can't believe he's outside. He's the only one of the 6 or 7 ferals that will let me close.

Anyhow, I might be in a big pickle when I move in less than 2 years because, like you, I can't leave any of the cats who depend on me behind.

I know I went on way too long, but it's comforting to know I'm not the only one who loves and has compassion for cats. I really think my neighbors make fun of me. I'm "that lady." LOL. Especially since it's a townhouse and the neighbors are so close. oh well...

I live with my son who is in college and his gf visits frequently. They both love cats and take wonderful care of the 2 we "adopted." So as long as I have my family's support, all is good :-)

Again, kudos for being such a good human!!!

Kudos to you for this. By getting one male fixed, you potentially have saved 100+ cats from being killed at the animal shelter.

Two things I wanted to express to you, beyond what has already been said:

There are feral cat rescue groups that can help you out and/or hook you up with certain vets that provide reduced fees for cat rescuers. So check into that.

Secondly, and most importantly: Since you are moving and taking him with you, he will need to be contained for at least a week at the new place in order for him to acclimate to his new surroundings. DO NOT JUST LET HIM GO WHEN YOU ARRIVE AT YOUR NEW HOME. HE WILL SPLIT, AND YOU WILL NEVER SEE HIM AGAIN. This is very important. Do you have a garage or a kennel where he can stay for a bit?

Yes - sorry it's been awhile since I looked at my post - sympathetic cat women

Yes to your question. We have been reading everything we can about moving cats. I'm so thankful to be moving to a street that is a quiet tree lined street with nice neighbors. We have a garage with a door to the back. We have got metal fencing and chicken wire and netting. We will be fixing up an area to keep them both caged in (believe they are brother and sister) and secure. We will set up their chairs and feeding bowls and kitty box inside. We will secure it very well and for the first week or two work very closely with them and spend as much time as we can with them to get them calmed down and acclimated. Not sure how he is going to react to four hour drive.

My biggest concern right now is that once I get him in to be fixed (hoping so much it's this next week) that I need to get him to come to me again for when we move. Poor guy I've got to get him in. Poor things comes back every now and then with obvious signs of being in a fit. A few days ago something happened to his ear. So first thing is to get him in, exam and blood tests and make sure he is healthy, fixed and then we go from there.

His Name Was Taffy, My Little StrayJan 08, 2015
I am sad today. I had a stray cat coming to my house every day and I fed him. He had some eye issues, my vet said conjunctivitis. I built him some homes out of Styrofoam, a tote box with soft padding inside, watched for him day and night to be sure he was fed. Some nights I would look out to see him sitting right outside my door. I knew he had belonged to someone because he welcomed affection, petting and the like. I could not let him in not knowing his background because I have 4 inside only ca ...

Pets And Stray Cat QuestionMar 03, 2011
I will try and not make it long, wanted to ask people who have had more experience with this what they think.  There is a neighborhood cat that has been around for a year or so.  Always walking yard to yard trying to catch a bird here or there.  Sweet little thing, never thought much of it as there are are a few cats that wander around.  Anyway...last week we've been having bitter cold temps (around the 10 degrees and below).  One morning we found her curled up on o ...

Moving With Acquired Stray CatMay 23, 2011
My dog died a month ago.  Simultaneously my son and his girlfriend befriended and brought a stray cat into the house.  He's neutered, clipped ear.  I think he may have been plucked off the street by a good person, fixed, and then dropped in this quaint, safe townhome community.  He is a sweet boy and fills the void of having just lost my dog of 10 years.  So, my question is... The cat comes and goes as he pleases.  He stays in the house more than not ...

What An Experience! Jan 24, 2011
He grasped me firmly but gently just above my elbow, guided me into his room and quietly shut the door. We were alone. He approached soundlessly from behind and spoke in a soft voice: "Just relax." Without warning, he reached down and soon I felt his strong hands start at my ankles, gently probing, moving steadily upward along my calves. My breath caught in my throat. I knew I should be afraid, yet somehow I just didn't care. His touch was experienced and sure. As his hands moved up my thig ...

The online seller, a fitness company, has now submitted their evidence.  They claim I bought it and they shippe ...

Anyone Have Experience With This Situation?Sep 09, 2011

Anyone ever have a person in their past that they miss and can't get out of their heads; you just wish they would somehow walk back into your life just to be near them again if only for a moment to feel what you used to feel?
