Moving to VA

Posted: Sep 1, 2015

Our family is thinking of moving to Virginia in the not too distant future.  I was wondering if anyone who lives in VA can give me an idea of the best places to go as far as cost of living, good neighborhoods, etc.  We live in Upstate NY now and I'm getting so sick of the cold winters and all the snow that we have here that I barely leave the house.  Thanks in advance.

I don't really have answers for you, but I think Virginia is beautiful. Visited Ft Eustis several years ago. Stunning area. My son was there for school & will be returning there later this year for a 2-year placement. I hope you find a place you like.

I live in a small town in southwest Virginia. I would not recommend it for young people because it is basically very, very small, mostly for retirees. I lived in Richmond for 20 years, but it has gotten very congested. Whatever you do, stay away from the northern Virginia/DC area. Could take you an hour to go to the grocery store 2 miles away.

That being said, there are very nice beach areas here that are not as expensive as other states. If I had my choice, though, I would actually head to Blacksburg, Virginia, home of Virginia Tech. It is a very nice area, close to mountains, small town turned nice city, and the suburbs of the place are gorgeous.

Just my thoughts.

I also live in VA. Used to live within 15 miles of Washington DC in the Virginia and Maryland suburbs. I agree with the poster above; traffic is awful, takes forever to get anywhere. Rush hour seems to have expanded. We moved to a more rural area in the Shenandoah Valley. Here, though, it is very isolated. If you are new to town and not a "native or with roots in the Valley", it may be difficult to find acceptance. Social circles seem to be centered around a church-based system. There is no public transportation, very few cabs, so be sure to have more than one auto and multiple drivers in your family. Where we are, the nearest "city" is about 25 miles away. We shop a lot online. Also, it's still cold and we still get lots of snow, maybe not as much as New York. I recall the lowest temperature this past winter was 1 degree. I"m very grateful to currently work from home, as we had some big snows that would have made it impossible for me to commute to work during those times. Jobs are few and far between in the local area unless you are a teacher or a nurse. Otherwise, it's a beautiful and relatively quiet area in which to live, especially if you are a homebody like me...BEst to you.

VA is like two different states. We natives call it - NOVA and ROVA, Northern V

and the Rest of VA. ROVA is more laid back and the cost of living is cheaper. NOVA has many government residents.

Weather obviously is not as harsh in ROVA. It's beautiful in the Staunton area.

I agree. I'm on the outskirts of Harrisonburg. It's a beautiful area. Lots of farms, very rural, but still close enough to "town" for necessities. Harrisonburg is known as the "Friendly City," and I have to agree. I love this area.

I agree that Blacksburg is a good place to live. That particular area has a lot to offer. Good college, lots of shopping relatively close by, and pretty affordable living.

I also agree with the poster that said to stay away from Northern VA/D.C. area. The cost of living is MUCH higher up that way. One of my friends lives up that way and is paying $2300 to RENT a house.

If job opportunities are what you are looking for, more out towards the coast, VA Beach or so, would be where you want to head. I have seen transcription jobs posted out that way. Not sure about the cost of living there, but the weather is generally milder out that way. Not as much snow as Blacksburg gets. Like anywhere else, the neighborhoods can be good or bad depending on area, but Blacksburg in general is good. I would not really recommend Roanoke/Salem as job opportunities here have gotten slim as well as pay rate is low.

Another thought just came to mind. If you are looking to transfer states, North Carolina may be just what you are looking for. Cost of living is good, generally decent weather and lots of job opportunities. Lots of beaches there to visit. Neighborhoods are generally good, but Im sure its like anywhere else, good areas and bad areas.

Whatever you decide is up to you. Good luck.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I do have a friend who lives in Lake Ridge and she rarely gets any snow and the weather seems to be mild. Here in Upstate NY where we live we get over 170+inches of snow every year and the temps have been well below 0 for weeks at a time. I was looking for more information on the other parts of Virginia and this is a great start. It'll be my husband and I and I 12 year old daughter. We were thinking of not moving until she graduated in 6 years, but I don't think I can wait that long.

Moving With Acquired Stray CatMay 23, 2011
My dog died a month ago.  Simultaneously my son and his girlfriend befriended and brought a stray cat into the house.  He's neutered, clipped ear.  I think he may have been plucked off the street by a good person, fixed, and then dropped in this quaint, safe townhome community.  He is a sweet boy and fills the void of having just lost my dog of 10 years.  So, my question is... The cat comes and goes as he pleases.  He stays in the house more than not ...

Selling House And Moving After Feb 26, 2017
It looks like I may have to sell the house before I lose it due to lack of income.  It has about 30 grand in equity, in the state it is in (50 with 15 g of work).  But, the task seems to daunting due to my age (59), I am virtually alone, and I have no idea where to move except out of California.  The problem may not be unfamiliar to others in our industry so maybe you can relate.  Though I have no real bills other than the mtg and utilities, I have very little accessible cash ...

Daughter Moving Out/ Boyfriend's MomJul 02, 2014
So my daughter is going to start her 3rd year in college soon (pre med). She just transfered to a different university. Up until now she lived at home and went to a university about 30 miles from here. Her new school is only 30 minutes away as well, but her and her boyfriend decided to rent an apartment very close to the school and move in together. Even though I am a very sad mom, I totally understand that they would like to move together.  Her boyfriend is an only child, and it shows. He ...

For Anyone Who Has Ever Bought A Home, When MovingMay 04, 2015
any construction or upgrades of any kind? My child is in the process of buying a home. I have bought 2 in my lifetime. The first one was built in the 40s. It was a HUD, repossessed and nothing was needed to make it livable. The second was a fairly new home, 4 years old, and it also was move in ready. My daughter has had a terrible time trying to get the people selling to turn on utilities so it could be inspected. Yesterday told me inspection day. No water on, the inspector could not check the A ...

Moving 2000 Miles With 2 CatsAug 06, 2013

"What's The Conservative Equivalent To 'Moving To Canada?'Nov 09, 2012
From The Atlantic: When Democrats lose elections, a small but audible ratio of them invariably announce their intention to move to Canada, that liberal paradise where healthcare magically costs nothing, everybody is nice to each other, and maple syrup flows freely (although the price of cheese may lead to sticker shock). But when Republicans lose, you almost never hear them grumbling in the same way. Are conservatives simply less prone to melodrama? Or would they just consider it ...

Infantry battalions, however, will remain closed to women." ...

Meanwhile, 29% held construction or production posts, such as a food processor, garment worker or machinist, down from 34% in 2007.
