moms changing

Posted: Sep 17, 2012

Has anyone experienced this with their mom?  She remarried a year and a half ago, and she is a different person.  She quit going to church, she dyed her hair, lost weight, doesn't want friends just him, tans now, acts younger.  He is a greedy, stingy person and now she is too and she was NEVER stingy.  She acts like she is better than other people now.  She gets an attitude when she was never like that especially with me.  She is basically someone I don't know anymore.  I even get the feeling she sticks her nose up at me like she is better than me even, and I'm her daughter.  I did not know someone could basically become a different person after marrying someone.  I've never seen anything quite like it.  It is beyond strange.  It is like the mom I knew does not exist anymore.  Drastic change.

If she's really going overboard on the snootiness, maybe *in time* that aspect will wear off.....maybe not....

My feeling is, the world keeps trying to turn women into Mother Theresas....women get so "mommified" mummified, they lose all sense of themselves as an individual or as a woman, or even as a physical being...your whole life revolves around being there for other people...how wonderful for your mom to reclaim herself!

Maybe she's expressing some buried anger there, that's been festering for years and years and years. It's not nice....but there it is. Maybe you could talk to her about it, just get it all out in the open?

My mom divorced my stepdad after 20 years, left my brother who was 14 at the time and just left. She was dating my stepdads best friend who lived down the road.
My stepdad asked her to come to bed one night and she said she wasn't happy. He said, well pack ur bags and leave...so she did.
Since then, she is not the same person. He is rich, says she doens't have to work, but she does bc she had to pay childsupport, tuition, etc for my brother, but really not the same person.
She never calls me, or him. She lives in same town with my brother and he sees her at her job (convenient store) every now and then. She used to send me $20 on birthday or special occasion, now I get an empty card. She still sends my daughter who is 14 $20, so that is something I guess; but not me..her daughter.
Its ridiculous, never calls to see what is on Christmas list, just gives a WalMart gift card with $25 on it...I mean, really...she is no longer my mom. She visits his grown kids and grandkids, but not her own.
Good Luck to you and yours!

The poster indicates that her relationship with her mom has changed. A relationship with a loved one is more important than reclaiming oneself. Her new fad will wear off and what will she be left with? An estranged daughter.

Not necessarily - wheres_my_job

Sometimes a person standing their ground for the first time in their life will be interpreted in a negative way. Sometimes family members WON'T accept "the family doormat" making changes, and may actively undercut the positive changes they are trying to make. Don't know this situation first hand, just saying, sometimes estrangement is unavoidable, if a family member simply WILL NOT accept another family member's happiness. Things happen.

Can you say you've not allowed your children to do the same things this mom did? ~snippet only - lots of more info at the link http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000...p_mostpop_read A lot of people wonder how Chinese parents raise such stereotypically successful kids. Single Moms???Sep 06, 2011
I'm not sure it's really a "problem" - more brainstorming and like to hear how others do it.  You might remember this past spring that I found out my husband was cheating on me so we got divorced which was final within 8 weeks.  Within 2 weeks after that, the ex moved 1700 miles away.  He's been back to our state (his whole family lives in my town) once in the last 4 months and that was for 4 days to get married.  When he got into town he picked up our son ...

Work At Home Moms?Mar 16, 2010
I'm a stay-at-home mom of a 5 year old and 2 1/2 year old and will be finishing my transcription course in the next couple of weeks.  I'm hoping any other transcription moms with young ones at home could give me tips on working and maintaining as much sanity with the kids as possible....when I first decided to head down the MT route, I thought it would be a great option for working and staying home with the kids at the same time, but now I am VERY concerned about being able to pro ...

Moms Of Married Grown KidsJul 14, 2014
I am the mother of grown kids. My son is married x11 years, has a 6 year old. He and his wife are having problems because her caught her cheating. They are trying to work through it, but he was a preteen when my own marriage fell apart due to my ex's repeated cheating. Since this is his wife's second time cheating, he feels that they are done and is just trying to be civil until their situations get settled (separate living places, custory, finances and all that stuff...). Question For Single Moms/divorced Women Out ThereJul 27, 2011
Hey Everyone out there.  Got a question for single moms/divorced women out there.  I am needing to kick the hubby to the curb.  Ever since he turned 30, my husband has decided that he is 18-21 again......drinking, going out all night to the bars, being hung over the next day, just being a loser.  I'm sick of it, I'm done with it, I don't even love him anymore, so how do I get out and make a clean break when there are children involved?  They are young (5 a ...

Mom Changing When RemarriedNov 02, 2011
Has anyone else had a mom or dad get remarried and change DRASTICALLY. My mom got remarried several months ago. She is DIFFERENT. Her friends have said they noticed a big change. I definitely have. She used to be a regular church goer. She stopped that. He doesn't go so I guess that's why. She used to cook Sunday dinner every week. She no longer cooks for her kids anymore. That used to be important to her to cook for her kids once a week, even if told not to bother. She stop ...

Changing Careers -- Dispatching?Feb 28, 2012
Recently there was a poster here celebrating her new position as a dispatcher for her state police.  That particularly got my attention because she is making $36K per year plus benefits AND a former coworker of mine (MT) left to go to work for our sheriff's office doing the same thing. I have been looking online for dispatcher jobs, and here are some of my thoughts: Doing 911/EMS stuff is not my cuppa tea.  WAY too stressful! I would think that sheriff's office and/or stat ...

Changing The Channel On Congress.May 12, 2017
watching the Senate intelligence committee hearings Thursday morning, I got so frustrated I started looking for a good cartoon show. If it's healthcare reform, the right side says it's going to replace Obamacare with something that works - but then they can't sell their conservative ideas to the public a ...

Changing Clothes In School For A Trip May 25, 2010
Does this seem a little off to you?  On Monday the class made tye-dye shirts, which are supposed to be worn on Friday for a field trip.  Okay.  Fine.  Now we, the parents, are being told that the shirts will not be sent home prior to the trip and the children will be required to change shirts in school prior to leaving for the trip.  Why?  Why on earth won't they send the shirts home Thursday?  I have a little girl and I am very uncomfortable with the fact ...

Changing The Social Paradigm Without Political OppressionOct 04, 2012
Seeing the constant, raging debate in this country day after day I've been thinking a lot about the futility of political change.  True change in the system of politics is both unlikely to happen and potentially ineffective even if it did.  The problem as I see it is that the American culture is now one of endemic greed.  My observation of the rich is that - despite their behavior as soulless, heartless sociopaths - they appear to be identical to poor people, except that they ...
