Changing the social paradigm without political oppression

Posted: Oct 4, 2012

Seeing the constant, raging debate in this country day after day I've been thinking a lot about the futility of political change.  True change in the system of politics is both unlikely to happen and potentially ineffective even if it did.  The problem as I see it is that the American culture is now one of endemic greed.  My observation of the rich is that - despite their behavior as soulless, heartless sociopaths - they appear to be identical to poor people, except that they have more money.  So I theorize that if this is true, you could give money to a poor person and they too would become a disconnected and uncaring plutocrat.

Unfortunately, the deeply misguided efforts of Lenin, Marx and the other pioneers of socialism, yielded very poor results.  It seems you could remove money from the equation and force everyone to do the common good, yet they still needed leaders.  Once these ordinary human beings were given power, they were corrupted by some unknown force that turned them into monsters in the same way money would have.  So, if you let people become rich, they become evil.  Yet if you keep them from getting rich, the person in charge of doing that becomes evil.  I may have discovered a serious flaw in the human species.

So I wonder how either Romney nor Obama could possibly be the cure for such a chronic and systemic condition.  If we raise taxes on the rich, they will have to steal more of our money to make up for it.  If we lower taxes on the rich, they will steal more of our money because they can.  And if we kill and eat the rich, we'll be arrested and probably get parasitesWink.

The problem is we love stuff in this country.  Consumerism is a rampant force that has both driven this country into the ground, yet also is the sole thing maintaining our precarious position.  If we stop buying, the economy collapses.  If you're American, you need a big house.  But if you have a big house you need lots of stuff so it doesn't look freakishly empty or give you time to wonder why you would possibly need such a big house when the average American has only one, two or no children and has shoved grandma and grandpa in a gang run death camp (Florida).  We are so lazy that blankets take too much work, so we made the Snuggy, grabber claws so we don't have to get up out of our seats to get another cold beer, and beer to help us forget how lazy we are.  Commercials on T.V., radio, internet, movies, billboards, clothes, tattoos, and even attractive people of the opposite gender paid to be friendly to random strangers and recommend them products (I'm not making that up!)

The American ideal we are led to believe is exceptionalism.  Anyone can be successful, but we need to be the best.  Anyone can make a good living, but we need to be millionaires.  Anyone can be well-liked, but we need to be famous.

Mitch Daniels said “We do not accept that ours will ever be a nation of haves and have nots; we must always be a nation of haves and soon to haves.”  Soon to haves?
The problem is that there are so few ways to become a true soon to have.  Why is a subjective value job like any of those in the investment industry more important, more valued and more respected than an objective value job such as a carpenter or plumber?  The value of indoor plumbing or shelter is knowable to all human beings.  What the numbers on the stock exchange mean are entirely subjective.  If I told you that the new Hypocrite exchange that I started was trading at 18,000 among my friends and I, what would you ask?  Probably something like "Is that good or bad," right?  Because it could mean anything.  It doesn't represent real countable objects.  It is an abstract concept.  Nothing wrong with abstract concepts, but they are ultimately less important than, for instance, food.  So why is it that if someone wants to be a farmer, they are seen as having less potential in life than someone who is going to the Ivy League to become a make-believe numbers trader?

As for the job creators themselves, they argue that they deserve so much money because their skills and services are so much more important than other people and work harder (long hours, piles of paper, playing so much golf, etc.)  They are more useful than other people.  So, if a CEO makes 10 million dollars a year and a surgeon makes 250,000 a year and a steelworker makes 70,000 a year, that means that - by the logic I've seen the rich use again and again - a CEO is 40 times more important and harder working than a surgeon.  They are 140 times more important and harder working than a steelworker.  A minimum wage earner in California would make 16,640 a year, so let's round it up to 17,000.  The value of human life on minimum wage is:  588 minimum wage workers equal a single CEO.

Life will never be fair, but this problem is clearly out of control.  What's worse, if these CEOs work for a bank, even if they fail we will save them with our money, which is what they squandered in the first place.  Now I'm mandated by the government to give my money to a health insurance provider to pay for them to send lobbyists to Congress to get them more money and rights than the rest of us.

In my opinion, we have to address the problem at its root:  Every American citizen.  We have to curb a culture of money worship.  We all succumb to it in some way during our lives.  We have fallen in love with the dream of one day all becoming millionaires.  Can we ever find a way to take pride in our work, regardless of what that is?  More importantly, can we ever convince the higher ups to respect the work we do?  Our caste system may not be so rigid as India, but we're headed there.  Now 47% of the population (probably for either Romney or Obama) are untouchables.  Something smells bad and it's not just the election.

That was a mouthful, but very well said.

And we do live a very greedy society these days. I do my best not to partake--but I know I'm part of it, too.

I don't have TV. I think that helps carry out the rest of my lifestyle, which excludes from my house any type of fast food, soda, Twinkies, etc.

I tell people I have a very small apartment, and I do not intend to fill it with a bunch of crap. They look at me like I need to get a bigger apartment. But the thing is, I like it. It makes me happy. And when I see my family stressing out over stupid stuff like how to afford video game systems or the newest iPhone, I feel a certain serenity that I don't think they would even recognize.

You've stated very eloquently some of the thoughts I'd struggled with in recent years.

We are VERY entitled society. On television, how often do we hear some version of "you deserve it." I even heard it in a PMS med commercial. "You shouldn't have to suffer." I drove by a condo development the other day that actually said "you deserve it" on the sign.

I agree that we need to boil it down to the people. We need to quit feeling like anybody owes us anything and that we're entitled to everything. We need to live within our means and help each other on a personal level -- not wait for the government to do it.

I do disagree about the amount of money a person earns equaling the value of a human life. While I do think that what CEOs in some companies earn, that position itself requires more skill and responsibility, and brings with it much more inherent risk, than running a cash register at the local drug store.

But CEOs earn those obscene amounts because people are willing to pay it. My pat response when people complain about something is "quit using it." I don't say it to be snarky, I really mean it. If we don't like what bank CEOs earn, they'd quickly lose their jobs if we all started keeping our money in our mattresses. And quit using credit.

I was talking with a group of people who were complaining about our dependence on foreign oil, I said, "Quit using it." If Americans didn't create the demand, the dependence would vanish. But when pressed, it turns out that we don't want to be inconvenienced, either! What, not drive!? Don't fly?! I once found and shared a list of petroleum-containing products. What, don't use lipstick?! Surely you jest! It goes back to that entitlement thing. Fix the world, but don't inconvenience ME while you do it.

How many social programs could be staffed, children tutored, homeless people housed, if we all volunteered. It doesn't take money to give of your time. And it would make a huge difference.

Whew, sorry for the rant, but it felt good. And yes, I agree... it starts with the people.

Rants are good for the soul :) - Fanatical Hypocrite

I always run into a brick wall when it comes to boycotting products. Like banks to use your example. Take Bank of America. Their corruption and failures were revealed to the public. I have a credit card with them. If I cancel my credit card though, I ruin my credit with everyone. Also, I figure the other banks are just as bad, they just haven't been caught yet. So while I support boycotting in general, it seems ineffective against systemic issues. That and the same people usually jump ship, get jobs at the other banks and bring their brand of leadership to those companies.

LOL about the lipstick thing. People have no clue how much it costs (money and resources) to look good. Petroleum is quite insidious. It's in a lot of stuff people don't think about.

Totally agree on the volunteering too. I keep trying to remind people who don't like entitlement programs that the easiest way to end it is to stop saying "You don't need the government to take care of people, we can do it through charity," and to start actually giving through charity. If no one is hungry, the government won't ever have to hand out food. The unfortunate problem is that while there are so many good people out there trying to help the less fortunate, it hasn't been enough.

Part of this though is fear of aliens (the metaphorical kind, not the bright lights and unwanted probes kind). It's easy to get someone of the same race and culture to help out their own, but what if someone they don't really like, but isn't actually harmful needs help? It can be tough, even for good people to overcome their prejudices. Would a Democrat feed a Republican? Would a Republican take in a Democrat? Which is why the government has had to step in so often, because they are willing, through faceless, emotionless bureaucracy, to pass the bucket of slop around to everyone, be they high class or no class, black or white, red or blue, Christian or Muslim.

I think in our heart of hearts everyone wants small government. Who likes giant, expensive, corrupt bureaucracies? But until we see that ground swell of kindness, acceptance (even if it's just ignoring the differences rather than approving) and giving, the government's role in social programs is here to stay. I blame a lot of that on the media. They create an atmosphere of distrust and fear by constantly reminding us all that a stranger is just a violent cannibal you haven't met.

And this is the time to do it. If your "representatives" have been refusing to do their job in Washington, refusing to do their best by you, vote to toss them out.

There have been changes--some good, some bad - and it will change more.

It wasn't until 1965 when US citizens truly got the right to vote freely. These voting rights are already being overturned. It was just in the last year the Lilly Ledbetter Act was passed for employoment rights for women. There are many (mostly men) who still don't understand why it is needed. Rights are under attack everywhere, for every right gained it seems one is lost.

I am glad I do not live in the 50s when women stayed in bad marriages and were beaten and abused because they were basically barefoot and pregnant and did not have means to earn a livinig independently. Or where industries were allowed to pour toxins in our water supplies or bury it "out back" or market tobacco products to young people.

I do wish our society did not need 2 good incomes to raise a child so a parent could nurture their children--make sure they are not babysat by the TV or video games and eating junk food.

Yes, it depends on respect for others, from the president and the leaders of our corporations to our children, families and the international community. Can it be done. I have to believe it can--one little step at a time.

It's kind of scary, but this is definitely - Fanatical Hypocrite

one, if not the, best time period in America, or the world for that matter to live in.

The modern era is less violent (terrifying that this is LESS violent than it was before) and we all enjoy better protections. I hope it stays that way and we continue to progress technologically and socially. It's just slow going sometimes.

If I wasn't so tired and lazy tonight, - :O

I'd have given you a standing O for that post. Very well said! Perhaps you should run for office. We need more people who think like that and see the root of the problem.

Has anyone else had a mom or dad get remarried and change DRASTICALLY. My mom got remarried several months ago. She is DIFFERENT. Her friends have said they noticed a big change. I definitely have.
