Does Anybody Watch "Dance Moms"?
Posted: Feb 18, 2014
This show is wrong on so many levels, and I feel SO sorry for the little girls. I feel a little guilty for watching it, but I guess I'm drawn in by all the crazy drama! ;
I do not entertain - People exploiting children

I think these shows (the tiara one, too), are horrible. I think they're setting themselves up for future psycho-kids, if they're not already. I refuse to watch them, and in fact, the only times I've seen them are the snippets they show as advertising.
It just goes to show ya---society has changed. Obviously, anough people watch this abuse, or the show wouldn't thrive. Sad.
I remember years ago during the Jon Benet Ramsey case, people were outraged that a woman would show off and exploit her child like that, and these days, it's rewarded.
I understand being drawn to drama--my secret confession is watching Keeping up with the Kardashians sometimes--but children are involved in the dance drama show, so we shouldn't support it.
Yeeps.
I couldn't agree with you more! - NYMT

I hear so many times "The girls (it's always girls, isn't it?) love it! They thrive on it!"
Not only does it give those little developing psyches a very contorted view of what it means to be a girl, a human being, it robs them of having a normal childhood.
I took dance lessons from age 5 through high school, wanted to be a professional dancer. It did take a lot of hard work, but there were no "stage moms" allowed, the teachers were professional in their demeanor. This kind of show does a disservice to the arts and to children.
I don't understand why the networks reach out to the lowest common denominator for viewership.

I too, for some strange reason, watch this show every Tuesday.. it's like a train wreck.. I cannot believe that any dance instructor who is that horribly mean and bitchy to the kids and to the moms would ever have a successful dance studio. I REALLY can't understand why all the moms subject their kids to this kind of treatment every single class! And the moms are another story.. if they would get rid of one more mom, there would probably be no drama between them. So why do I keep watching? I don't know...
Kids want to be famous, too - Nik

A lot of kids just want to be famous. I began watching this show last year so I don't know the entire background, but these moms obviously have issues with fame as well as money. But I do think there is a component of these kids thinking that being famous for being on TV is almost a norm. The episode I saw had these girls arriving at a dance competition with throngs of make-up wearing tweens holding up signs and screaming for these girls like they were the Beatles. I imagine that's a pretty heady feeling. I would imagine most of it's scripted, but every now and then there's some real emotion from those little girls which is what both sickens/entices viewers.
These shows are all scripted and fake! - Bell

All "reality" shows are far from reality. They are all fake and scripted garbage. I canceled my cable and bought a smart box and watch Netflix and Youtube for interesting programs. I remember when you could actually learn something from the programs on the Discovery Channel, TLC (The Learning Channel), History Channel, National Geographic, etc. Now there is absolutely nothing on but crap reality shows! I can't change it or stop it, but I will not encourage it.
It is really sad how easily we have deteriorated as a society when people like Dance Moms, Teen Moms, Honey Boo Boo, etc. are glorified for being ignorant trash. But I guess they wouldn't have such success if there wasn't an audience for it.
What's the saying? "Build it and they will come."

if you feel guilty, don't watch. If there are poor ratings the show goes away.
I never even heard of this show.

I think the show is disgusting. That overweight woman, who is the teacher is just obnoxious. Whenever I see a commercial for it, I immediately grab my remote. I wish that show would go off the air. All that woman does is yell and scream. I would never have subjected my daughter to something like that when she was young.

I watch it... from the first episode until now... and I keep telling myself that most of it must be fake.. Wish I could be on the jury deciding the fate of Kelly since she now "attacked" Abby Lee... I would have slapped Abby Lee months ago...
I just decided last night that I wasn't going - to watch the show anymore
[ In Reply To ..]
I think it is all scripted and fake. They all have contracts with Lifetime and can't get out of it, so the part of kicking the girls off is a lie. I ready that because of that, Abby is purposefully mean and abusive because the mom's can't do anything about it because they can't get out of the contract, and who knows if that's true.
I think the brawl between Kelly and Abby was fake too, just for show and ratings.
But in all honesty, I can't support watching the show anymore. I think Abby is a despicable human being and very abusive. It is not a good and decent way of spending my Tuesday night. It is not good TV period in my opinion.
And same for Here Comes Honey Boo Boo...jeez another winner of a show!! (sarcasm)
Either way - Even if it's fake
[ In Reply To ..]
I think it's a horrible message to send to kids. Fake or not, young children don't have the capacity to tether out real from not real. Even if they did know the difference, it's sending a message to them that being mean gets you attention and accolades. Terrible.
Really, the more people who watch it (and they know what you watch!) the more the show will run.
Sad part is, there really are moms out there like that. It probably makes the real moms who are nasty feel okay and normal about being horrible.

I watched that show for a while. There is some sick part of me that enjoys watching really stupid people for pleasure and laughs. That is all it is good for, to show people how stupid and ignorant other people are, and laughs :)
What's it about? - Never seen it

I don't have cable and like the above poster, I have Netflix and these kinds of shows are coming there now. I just wonder what the show is about? Honey boo boo? I know she's a little girl, it's just about her and her family? I'm not a fan of reality shows, just wondering what the attraction is. Like watching a train wreck?

I have a theory about "reality TV" - NYMT
[ In Reply To ..]
Back in the days before the Internet, actually before television, there were "freak shows" where people would pay money to see stuff they probably would never see in their own lives. Now that we have Internet, and you can watch anything anywhere you don't have to go to a freak show to feed you prurient interests.
Someone took that "freak show" concept and realized they could build a viewership from those people. I guess they were right. I personally will never watch those shows. I tried a couple times and couldn't make it through an episode.
Any time kids are exploited - I do not watch

I'm not big on reality shows at all. The word reality makes me want to cringe, because the show is Hollywood no matter how you slice it. But when they involve children in this stuff, it makes me sick.
I feel the same way about parents who show off their kids by having them perform anything, anywhere. With the exception of a school play or group song now and then spare me, please.
reality shows - Friday Night Tykes - Effie

One of my grandsons played on one of the teams featured on Friday Night Tykes. Only half of the episodes have even been aired so far but the show has practically destroyed the team - for the adults. The kids as far as my daughter can tell seem to be totally unimpressed and/or unaware of all the drama going on. So kids can be pretty amazing.

perform. It is just amazing what they can do, even as they get taller and older. I wish they would just concentrate on the dancing. I'm sure the producers are egging all this bitchiness on.
PS; professional dancers to need to be trained somehow. - L&L
[ In Reply To ..]
The relationships have deteriorated a lot since the first season. I'm not standing up for Abby Lee Miller, but if you check her bio, she has trained several professional dancers.
To compare this show to Honey BooBoo or Toddlers and Tiaras is like comparing apples and cannon guns.
Is there any reason - see msg

Is there any reason someone can't just send their kid to their local reputable dance school instead of parading them all over the TV? I don't think we need to encourage our children to be little hams.
