Changing clothes in school for a trip

Posted: May 25, 2010

Does this seem a little off to you?  On Monday the class made tye-dye shirts, which are supposed to be worn on Friday for a field trip.  Okay.  Fine.  Now we, the parents, are being told that the shirts will not be sent home prior to the trip and the children will be required to change shirts in school prior to leaving for the trip.  Why?  Why on earth won't they send the shirts home Thursday?  I have a little girl and I am very uncomfortable with the fact she is being forced to change clothes in school.  We aren't being told if they are to change in private or infront of teachers/other students, nothing.  I just get a bad feeling about this.  I'm considering keeping my daughter home from school the day of the trip.  What do you all think?

I have a feeling they want the kids to change at school because they've had too many issues where the shirts were sent home and then the kids didn't wear them for the school trip. That's just my guess, though.

Like the other responder said, though, call the teacher and talk over your concerns with him or her.

my guess - is that the shirts

[ In Reply To ..]
are being dried and possibly even washed by the teacher as a courtesy to you. Knowing that some parents would inevitably forget to wash the shirt and dress the child in it for the day, the teacher probably thought it would be easier this way.

I also think they want to make sure that all the kids are dressed in the shirts so that they can be easily identified as part of the class. That is a good thing.

I can understand your concern, but I really don't think you have anything to be worried about. I'm sure they will send the girls to the girls' bathroom and the boys to the boys' bathroom.

I definitely would not make her miss her trip over it. Field trips are a big deal to kids. I know my daughters would never forgive me if they missed one.

Can't they just put the shirts OVER whatever - they are already wearing?

If you know what is on the T-Shirt and exactly where they are going, sounds like it should - be harmless

[ In Reply To ..]

Were you told before they made the T-Shirts or has your daughter told you WHAT is on the T-Shirts?   Is there anything else besides the tye-dye on the shirt?  Do you know where the field trip is to?  Anything controversial about the destination?

You did not mention what grade your daughter is in.  Does she already have to change for gym or other “exercise” classes (I do not have grade-school age children anymore and school systems have changed so much recently, I am not even sure if they have gym class anymore)?  If they already change clothes in school for whatever reason, I am sure they will take proper steps to ensure privacy and decorum.

I do not want to start any “conspiracy” theories here, but the West Coast is famous for trying to make political statements using our children.  This has become a hot topic with the new Arizona Immigration Law.  Cities and States banning students from traveling to Arizona for scheduled tournaments, etc.  They banned the students from selling T-shirts at one Wisconsin school because of the controversy (article link below).

Like I said, I am not trying to start any conspiracy, but I would definitely want to know what is on the T-Shirt and where they are going.  If that satisfies you, then I am sure everything will be fine and totally harmless.

Let us know what you find out.  Maybe Fox News would be interested if there is a possible controversy there.  LOL

Tye-dye shirts - changing in school - West Coast MT

[ In Reply To ..]
My daugher is only in second grade -- no they don't change for gym class. Also, there wasn't an option for wearing a second shirt underneath and it is supposed to be 90 degrees the day of the trip. They are only going to another elementary school to meet penpals. I don't know of the other adults who will be going on the trip to help out, but some are very questionable. I don't want my child changing in front of some of these parents or other students for that matter. One I know of has a criminal record! How they are even allow to go along is beyond me. I wanted to go myself, so I knew what was going on, but was told they have enough people already. We've had trouble with teachers and bullys at this school in the past. They take responsibility for nothing. My daughter ended up with physical injuries they said it was unfortunate end of story. Nothing was done to the boy who "damaged her." He's still at large being the bully he is. Meanwhile I have to jump through hoops and BS to keep him away from my child, the innocent little girl who just wants to learn. She really doesn't even want to go. She is afraid they will be forced to change in front of the strangers-- her words, not mine. We don't live in the West Coast any longer -- just my screen name. Haven't changed it yet. No issues with words on shirts. Just the school being totally idiotic, as usual. I know the seniors had to change clothes on a school bus for a trip -- no lie. I have a senior as well. We didn't let her attend school that day either. The girls were to be on one bus and the boys on another, but still . . . changing clothes on a bus???

her safety, etc., then I would seriously consider changing schools. If you are uncomfortable with the person with the "criminal record," I would definitely discuss this with the school authorities. Do you know what the criminal record is?? If it had anything at all pertaining to childern, this person would not be accompanying them as a chaperone for a school trip. I would definitely be looking for another school however.
P.S. If your daughter was physically attacked - t

or hurt in any way, file charges against the bully. In most states/school systems bullying is totally illegal and the kid should be suspended or expelled from school.

to an amusement park. We marched in the parade when we first got there and then changed out of our uniforms into regular clothes on the bus so we go in the park. Girls on one bus, guys on the other. I don't get what the big deal is.
I had to do this too - what is the big deal

report them to a local newspaper, the board of education, the police for the assault. Every school has some bad kids, cannot avoid that unless you live in a bubble or utopia. A kid that doesn't want to go on a field trip is a bit strange though, maybe you are transferring some of your fears onto the child? As for the criminal record, unless they are a child molester or were convicted of assault, drugs, rape or murder, I would not worry about it. In theory, unless a sex offender, they have paid their debt to society and should at least be treated cordially. --We just recently had an issue with a kid harassing my 10-y/o with sexual comments and gestures. It was acted on immediately. The kid is in deep doo doo now at school and with his dad. I do work very PT for the school too, but I do not believe my being a county employee had any bearing on how it was handled. Our schools here take bullying in any form very seriously and it is not tolerated at all. If you want things to change then you need to either (1) take you daughter out of there and enroll her elsewhere, or (2) be proactive, form a non-bullying association, (3) get talking with the local news, board of education, local delegates, raise a stink. --- There is creadence to the expression the squeaky wheel gets the grease.

I think it's fine. I wouldn't worry too much about it. - Kendra

Just my opinion, though.

in this day and age, they won't have them change in front of everyone else - sssdt

[ In Reply To ..]
I worked at schools for a few years back in the 1990s, and trust me, everyone was very very careful about even appearing to be inappropriate. If you're really worried, call to ask.

They probably won't send the shirts home because kids will forget to bring them back for the trip.

I think you are freaking out over nothing. Instead of spending time on this board and threatening to keep your daughter from a fun field trip, call the teacher or the school secretary and go from there.

Good grief. They will not be changing in front - jk

of the entire class. Use a little common sense. The teacher will probably take them to the bathroom and have them change. I can see not sending the shirts home, if the kids are little/young, then they might not make it home with them on the bus.

Shirts for field trips - Silly Girl

[ In Reply To ..]
Our classes (elementary) each have a "class t-shirt". A different color for each teacher's class. I can understand where they are coming from. There is ALWAYS 2-3 kids who show up without their class shirt on for the field trip for whatever reason that may be. This is your school's way of making sure all the kids are dressed alike and stand out from "common people" or other school kids who may be having the same field trip. I really wouldn't worry about it.

I think you are over reacting. They are not idiots - sm -

at schools. They will probably have the girls change in the bathroom and the boys in the boy's bathroom or the classroom. The sexes will be separated for this procedure which should take all of two minutes. They are not sending the shirts home as they know from experience some kid will come in without their shirt, plain and simple. If you are so uncomfortable with it, drive to school that day, take your daughter to the bathroom yourself and have her change her shirt. Or tell her to put it on over the shirt you have her wear that day. It really is not that big a deal. What are you gonna do when she has to change clothes for gym? You really need to chill, we are talking a T-shirt not a full body change of clothes.
