Would like some advice regarding my son voting sm

Posted: Nov 2, 2010

My 18 yo son has registered to vote and I would like to take him today to do just that. However, my quandry is, he is developmentally disabled and his disability is such that he receives SSI because of it. I would like to point out that he did graduate from high school this June and I believe would be able to understand the mechanics of voting (with my help perhaps), but I know that he would have no idea who to vote for. So, I am questioning whether it is responsible of me to let him vote (perhaps voting his party) or whether it would be irresponsible of me to let him vote. I have been telling him since he turned 18 of all the things available to him as an adult, including voting, and he has shown interest in doing it. Also, would I be able to help him in the voting booth? Any suggestions, comments greatly appreciated.

Hmmm - My opinion

I think that if he really doesn't know who he is voting for, he should probably skip this election. On the other hand, I wonder how much research the average American puts into their decision-making. As for his disability, the local elections board and the people who work at the polls can direct you and your son as to how to help him with actually casting his vote.

I don't know the extent of your son's disability. But, if you can help him to process the candidates' information before he goes to the poll, that may be appropriate.

It is his right to vote. You can provide information to him - but it is his right regardless of your feelings.

what is he going to do? Would he just be a double vote for you? I am not sure that I really understand what the quandary is. Did he say he wants to vote, or do you want to take him to do it because you just want him to be a part of the process? I am not trying to say what the correct thing to do here is, but I probably would not take anyone to vote who does not have any idea for whom to vote because it seems silly to just pick a name IMHO.

My nephew is also developmentally disabled - This is what she does

He wants to vote. He\'s 20 years old. She and my BIL sit down and explain to him in very simple terms who the candidates are and what they say they will do. He may not understand it totally, but she may tell him... this is so-n-so and he said he will cut taxes and create jobs which is a good thing because your dad has been out of work, so we hope he will do good things. Or this is so-n-so and he said he is going to increase health benefits which would be a good thing because of... They just explain to him very simply what each candidate is for, show him a picture of the candidates so he can associate the face with the name. Basically whatever way they vote is the way he is going to vote. It may not seem fair to some people, but as a citizen it is their right to vote. They just have to do the best they can at explaining who each candidate is in simple terms.

Went to vote this morning, and Fiorina, Rubio were on the ballot to vote for.  I asked why, they mumbled something about printing ballots long ago.  What if some numb nut votes for them, what happens to the vote?  They all looked at me as I had sprouted two heads and 4 arms.  UMMM, don't know.  Okay, what do you know?  WOW, and it comes down to Indiana.  If it is any forecast of things to come, I don't know who is going to get the votes from Indiana.& ...

Because Voting In Ohio Just Isn't Hard Enough..smAug 10, 2012
Ohio voting just got a little harder, not because early voting has been cut down, and not because of new ID restrictions. That's right. Republicans are doing everything in their power to ensure a win in Ohio. The latest tactic works on a county by county basis. County by county it is decided whether or not to extend hours at the voting sites. Each county has a commission comprised of two dems and two pubs. You would think this would be a good thing to extend hours in this state right? ...

In Response To Below Re: Why Are You Voting For TrumpJul 24, 2016
It is painfully obvious that President Obama used the tools he had available in order to do something. Unfortunately, the only thing republicans (the ones in control of congress) know is dictatorship - they know nothing about real life and how one has to compromise. I do it all day, every day in my life or I would not have a job let alone a husband or relationships. When you lose at a game or an election, you then have to play fair. They have acted like spoiled little losers and it makes me asha ...

Obama Voting BlocApr 04, 2014
I heard on Mark Simone's NY radio show today that the 4 groups of people who put Obama through to the presidency were (1) African Americans, (2) Hispanic Americans, (3) young people and (4) single women. Those 4 groups of people are also the ones most negatively impacted by this current economy. Isn't that just wonderful? The ones who helped put him in office are the ones reaping the least reward for doing so. What a guy! The most recent unemployment numbers are higher than the natio ...

Voting For Bernie SandersJan 18, 2016
Now you all can flame me, but having lived through the 50s and 60s when Communism was a threat to our country, I cannot fathom anyone voting for Bernie Sanders. Socialism is too similar to Communism and eventually turns to Communism. This Independent And Her Entire Family Are VotingAug 19, 2016
There is one overriding consideration in our family, and that is the urgent need to break the strangle-hold that the "elite", the "insiders", the "establishment" have had on government for too long. In other words: The "old-boy" (or "old-girl") network. Money, and its illicit influence. Back-room deals and corrupt arrangements. Had Sanders not sold out and broken off an independent candidacy, our family frankly would have been split, but unfortunately Sanders proved to be just another P ...
