Romney: Abortion legislation not 'part of my agenda'

By Elise Viebeck 10/10/12 08:10 AM ET

Mitt Romney is in hot water after appearing to flip-flop on abortion in an interview.

Speaking with the Des Moines Register on Tuesday, Romney said "there is no legislation with regards to abortion that I'm familiar with that would become part of my agenda."

The remark contradicts Romney's past commitment to ensuring U.S. laws reflect the "values of preserving life," and has prompted criticism from abortion-rights advocates who accuse Romney of playing politics.

“Mitt Romney is misleading the public about his intention to restrict safe and legal abortion," said Planned Parenthood Action Fund vice president Dawn Laguens in a statement.

Specifically, Romney has promised to support fetal pain legislation, which bans abortion after 20 weeks on the disputed premise that pre-viable fetuses feel pain.

He has also vowed to end public health funds for Planned Parenthood because the group provides abortions, and to support a decades-old ban that prohibits federal dollars from supporting the procedures.

Romney outlined these pledges in a letter to supporters posted in July at the anti-abortion site Life News.

"I support the reversal of Roe v. Wade because it is bad law and bad medicine," Romney also wrote. "I will only appoint judges who adhere to the Constitution and the laws as they are written, not as they want them to be written."

In the Des Moines Register interview, Romney promised one action on abortion — an executive order to bar U.S. foreign aid from funding it.

His campaign later clarified his position.

"Mitt Romney is proudly pro-life and will be a pro-life president," spokeswoman Andrea Saul said in a statement.

The turnaround comes as Romney seeks to soften his public image in the closing weeks of the presidential race, particularly on healthcare issues. Polls have found him leading President Obama since his highly successful debate performance last week.

In a statement, Obama's campaign criticized the GOP nominee for his willingness "to play politics with such important issues."

"We know the truth about where [Romney] stands on a woman’s right to choose," said Obama campaign spokeswoman Lis Smith.

"He’s said he’d be delighted to sign a bill banning all abortions, and called Roe v. Wade ‘one of the darkest moments in Supreme Court history’ while pledging to appoint Supreme Court justices who will overturn it. Women simply can’t trust him."

targeting specific voting groups, but not others. Political contractors are developing profiles on all of us via phone polls and our computer use, as well as voter registration and other public and private records, so each household can get an e-mail that says what it wants to see. And apparently his team has already provided denials for the pro-lifers.

As for reality, who knows what he really intends. I started out with a better opinion but am not sure any more that he knows himself beyond a sort of broad picture. He bends to every pressure and certainly knows there'd be some very tough guys coming for him if he became president.

It's too bad... - SK1

Because I respect a man who stands by his principles and this is pure political pandering, but it doesn't surprise me. I've suspected all along that he wouldn't try to overturn Roe v. Wade because it would be political suicide.

I agree. I also wish he had not apologized for (sm) - Texan

the 47% remark because I don't feel that he meant he planned on ignoring or didn't care about 47% of the population. He meant there was no point wasting precious time trying to get their votes. But whatever. I did not think for a minute he would try and overturn RVW either. It would never work anyway. Too much opposition. He is pandering, yes. They all do.

Tex, after saying "Democrat" and "47%" who he spoke about - were the 78% who like SocSec and

other entitlements. "Democrats" was just a key word to ready the audience for for disparagement, and so was the "47% who don't pay income tax." He stopped talking about just the 47% as quickly as he stopped talking about only Democrats--immediately--went on to disparage normal people to his wealthy audience. Makes me wonder what they say about us as the night wears on and to booze burden builds.

I hope you realize... - sm

that the President does not have the power to overturn Roe v. Wade.

No, just appoint Supreme Court - justices who do NM

Don't you agree with fetal pain legislation? - backwards typist

Evidently, you don't agree with this quote from Romney? I especially don't believe abortions should be done after 20 weeks.

"Specifically, Romney has promised to support fetal pain legislation, which bans abortion after 20 weeks on the disputed premise that pre-viable fetuses feel pain."

Now, here's a little bit about Obama:
Barack Obama promised during the presidential campaign that he wanted to reduce abortions and said as much in a statement yesterday in association with the anniversary of Roe. Today, however, he betrayed that promise by forcing taxpayers to fund groups promoting and performing abortions overseas.

In an executive order, the president officially scrapped the Mexico City Policy that protected taxpayers from involvement in overseas abortions for eight years. Now, Obama will send hundreds of millions of dollars to groups that aggressively promote abortions on a worldwide scale.

The only difference between Romney and Obama is the party. One party thinks it's okay to lie and blame everyone else for the problems and the other party is trying to please everyone, which can't be done, but it's only lying if it's the other party.

LDB's Biggest FearJul 07, 2011
If you will recall, Ms. Burdick's greatest fear was "common sense being lost."  That's exactly what happened.  I just heard a woman who was protesting outside the courthouse and she summed up what I feel completely.  She said that jurors should be instructed strongly on using common sense, and not just looking for reasonable doubt.  I know this was mentioned during closing arguments, but it went out the window.  I feel this jury failed us.  If common ...
