The wedding dress shopping ...

......did your mom go with you, or help you pick it out? If not your mom, did anyone else go with you? A friend, relative, co-worker, etc.

Mine went with me, but sort of as an after-thought. I'd already picked out a hat (not a veil) and needed a dress to match the hat, so she went with me to find a dress. She soooo wanted me to wear a long wedding gown, but that's not what I wanted. I wanted a short white gauzy party dress. She made me try on a long gown, and I thought she was going to cry when she saw me in it.

I got married 30 years ago and my mom did come with me. I had already seen the gown I liked at a bridal fair so when I tried it on I knew it was the one. I don't remember my mom's reaction but she never gave me any problems. My daughter is getting married next year and she took me. I told her I wanted to be the first one to see you in the gown she chooses. After trying on 25 dresses she picked what she liked. I only gave opinions when asked. It is her day and she has to get what she likes. When I saw her in the one she picked I got goose bumps. Beautiful. Her future mother-in-law is upset that she was not asked to go with her. DD told her that her mom raised her from birth and she wanted to experience the mom/daughter moment.

She didn't go with me, but she bought the dress. - sm

I wore my mother's dress, and she bought it by herself, without input from her mother, in 1954. I know why she didn't bring my very practical grandmother along. My mom spent $150 for the dress in 1954, and that was quite a bit of money for the day. My grandmother always said my mother paid too much. When I announced that I would wear my mother's dress in 1985, my grandmother exclaimed, "Thank goodness! Finally your mother will get her money's worth out of that dress!" My mother, however, was very upset that I wanted to wear her dress. She felt that people would think I could not afford to buy my own dress, which was partly true. We didn't have a lot to spend on the wedding, but I did love the dress. My mother still brings that up, 25 years later saying that everyone surely thought I was a poor bride. Well, I was, but I wore a beautiful dress!

I wish I could have worn my mom's, but - see message

She was a professional dancer (ballerina) so her waist was quite small. I loved her dress so much. She made it herself with her mom.

I eloped though so didn't have the chance anyway. I think it's great when children can either wear or incorporate part of their mother's wedding dress into theirs. I'm glad you had that chance.

My mom came with me to pick out the dress, 2 days before the wedding... - Kendra

My mom lives in Nebraska, we were living in Washington at the time, staying in California and getting married in Vegas. My MIL was so upset (we were staying at her house for holidays) that I would not go with her to buy a wedding dress, but I told her that I wanted to involve my mother and she was free to come with us, as well, in Vegas. She swore I would not be able to find one, but come on, it's Vegas! If I can't find a wedding dress there, it was unlikely that I could find one anywhere else. I ended up renting one because I could get a much nicer dress that way and I would never use the dress again anyway. Thanks heavens, I don't even have a daughter I could hope to give it to someday--just me and the boys.

My mom went with me but I don't ever remember - sm - ECMT

anyone getting all emotional. We went to three salons, I tried on dresses, found two different dresses I liked (at 2 different places), my mom was balking at the prices ($550 and $800) which I informed her was quite cheap for a wedding dress. Money was not an issue (Dad had given me a nice mutual fund to pay for the wedding and leftover was our wedding gift). I ended up getting the cheaper dress just because I totally loved it (ivory ballgown style, pearls all over the skirt, off-the shoulder plain pleated satin top)...still love it. If one of my daughters want it fine, if not, fine. I have my mom's dress and veil crown but they are not in good shape (though the veil just needs new tulle) and she had about 20-inch waist when she married, so you need to be pretty small to make it work or have it majorly altered. ---I was going with a hat too, from Fredericks of Hollywood of all places, but ended up changing my mind and returned it about 5 months after I bought it (after I proved to them that I was not pulling a fast one on them), and got a veil I found in a consignment shop that I liked a lot more than the hat.

My father-in-law is getting married.  My husband is best man, my son is doing something during the ceremony like rolling out the aisle runner with one of the bride's grandson, and my daughter is a junior bridesmaid with bride's three granddaughters.  My son and husband are wearing tuxes rented by the groom and my daughter's dress was purchased by the bride along the other bridesmaid dresses.  I have no "job" in the wedding at all except for getting my family ready, ...

Can't Seem To Part With Mother's 65-year-old Wedding Dress...help...Aug 25, 2015
My sister was cleaning out her attic and found my mother's old wedding dress from 65+ years ago. She asked if I wanted it and I said I at least wanted to look at it. Well I took it, had my daughter try it on for a laugh, but now I don't know what to do with it. It is in bad shape. It's all wrinkled and the lace is crunchy, but the main fabric is a lovely heavy satin (although yellowed and stained). My mother hated it and I sent her a pic of it and she still hates it. She said she ...

Grocery ShoppingDec 29, 2009
I am just wondering about an idea I have had and wanted some feedback to see if it a workable plan in your mind. I am thinking of starting to be a personal shopper for people for their groceries and household items.  I am thinking that I can make money this way by taking their shopping lists and buying the groceries using coupons and then they still just pay their grocery bill and I make my money by whatever coupons I can come up with toward their orders.  What do you think?  Wo ...

Does Anyone Do Their Shopping Online?Feb 17, 2013
I've been trying to find a more inexpensive way to buy groceries.  I don't do couponing much because all the coupons are usually for stuff I don't normally buy. I was looking at Amazon and it is amazing all the stuff they sell.  My question is this.  I see for instance a 12 pack of canned beans for 41.84 (pack of 12).  Does that mean 12 cans?  If so, Amazon is selling for 4 times the amount I pay for at the grocery store.  Am I reading that right?&nb ...

Shoe Shopping DilemmaFeb 05, 2012
About a month ago, I stopped at a shoe store I don't normally frequent.  I happened upon a pair of shoes that were very comfortable and stylish.  They were $100.  This was the most I ever paid for a pair of shoes, but after wearing the ones I walked out with for a week, I had no regrets.  I bought that pair and also ordered another pair in standard black (the store didn't have my size in stock).  The store said it would take about 2 weeks and they would ship di ...

To Save $$$ Grocery Shopping, Check This Out ......Jun 12, 2014
I do the majority of my grocery shopping at Walmart (I don't like Walmart, but I have to grocery shop there for financial reasons - besides, I can't see paying more for the same item at Publix when I can get it for less at Walmart.)   I also do comparison shopping at Walmart. The other day when checking out, the clerk told me about Walmart's "savings catcher" site (savingscatcher.com) where you can save even more money on your grocery bill (or anything you buy ...

NEW JOB HAS DRESS CODEAug 19, 2011
My new parttime job is at one of those electronic stores where everyone wears khakis and polo shirts or short sleeved cotton shirts with the store name on them.  I am a skirt and blouse kind of gal, occasional jeans, kind of "casual-dressy-girly" style I guess.   The shirts have to be tucked in and we have to wear a belt.  I'd like to get some ideas as to how to "style" this up for my comfort level without breaking the dress code rules.  I already have thought of s ...

Rhianna's DressJun 03, 2014
I gotta say, I'm no prude, I don't think I'm getting THAT old...  But if anyone else had worn a dress like Rihanna did, wouldn't they be arrested for public indecency?  Where were the police for gosh sakes? I'm sure they have police at these events!  Or is this just another instance of celebrity having their way and to heck with the laws?  Weren't children or young adults present?   What's going on with celebrities and their over i ...

Did Anyone Have Wedding Disasters?Nov 05, 2009
My daughter is getting married in a week.  The wedding is not in our home state so she is flying out late Thursday night (tonight).  She picked up her dress on Tuesday night from the alterations, and they have ruined her dress.   Don't know how they did it but from the waist down the fabric hangs crooked so that a seam that used to be hidden in a fold now is total exposed and runs the full length of the skirt righ through the middle of the dress but on ang ...

OPINIONS ABOUT WEDDING CAKEJun 30, 2010
My 25 DD is getting married next June.   She does not want to have a receiving line after the mass which is a Catholic ceromony because she said it is awkard.   So intead she would like to have a receving line at the reception where the guests line up and the bride and groom pass out the cake and then thank people for coming. I am totally against this but she said that is the way it is these days. Talk About Saving Money On My Wedding...Oct 15, 2009
Well, yesterday we went downtown to get our license and our excitement got the best of us.  We ended up having the ceremony performed on the spot and walked out as husband and wife, lol!  Total cost was $79, as compared to the approximately $250 I had managed to shave it down to by having the wedding at our apartment. We've decided to use the October 31st date as our 'reception,' and instead of having the actual ceremony on that date, we're turning it into a cele ...
