To save $$$ grocery shopping, check this out ......

Posted: Jun 12, 2014

I do the majority of my grocery shopping at Walmart (I don't like Walmart, but I have to grocery shop there for financial reasons - besides, I can't see paying more for the same item at Publix when I can get it for less at Walmart.)

I also do comparison shopping at Walmart. The other day when checking out, the clerk told me about Walmart's "savings catcher" site (savingscatcher.com) where you can save even more money on your grocery bill (or anything you buy at Walmart).

Just go to the site, register, type in your receipt number (at bottom of your receipt) and the date of purchase.  Walmart's computer(s) scans all the prices from major stores in the area, and if a particular store's offering an item for less, Walmart will give you the difference in the form of a card they email to you which contains a bar code.

The next time you're at Walmart, hand the clerk the card at checkout, and you'll be able to save even more money on comparison shopping items you missed, plus using coupons.

By the way, anyone know of any good online coupon sites (printables) besides coupons.com, couponmom.com, couponsuzy.com, and grocerycouponcart.com?  Names, please!

Thanks -

I do all my grocery shopping at Walmart too, much as I hate it. The prices are so much cheaper for the same items as in the regular grocery stores, and the selection is much better. I've never heard of savingscatcher.com, but I'm checking it out!

Thanks!

Glad I told you about it....... - Tina

... and that you'll be able to save some $$$ because in this economy, every bit helps. You can either let the savings build up on your card or cash it in each time you go grocery shopping.

I'm a real heavy hitter when it comes to comparison shopping, but I only check out the major grocery stores in my area for sales and not the other smaller ones - savingscatcher searches all, so it's just a good extra savings....

I rarely shop anywhere but Publix and WinnDixie - coupons in hand

[ In Reply To ..]
I know the sales patterns and wait for the BOGO sales at Publix and Winn Dixie. I buy enough to last until the next sale cycle so I never run out of something. I buy my produce, though, at Aldi's and save a ton there. I get protein at Winn Dixie when they have BOGO sales. This week they had bottom round roasts on sale. I got two 3-pound roasts for $10. Each roast is enough for two meals, so that makes the protein $2.50 per meal.

When Publix has their $50 gas cards on sale for $40, I get one, then use my Fuel Perks from Winn Dixie to lower the per gallon price. It is not unusual to fill up my SUV on one gas card plus have 2-3 gallons left over for the next time I go to the pump.

You sound like a smart shopper...... - Tina

I love Publix, but their prices are past outrageous. I only buy wildcaught seafood there and ground beef and, of course, their BOGOs. I love it when they have BOGOs, and I have coupons for the BOGOS - I save a ton.

I use to shop at Winn Dixie when I lived in Florida but stopped after I found separate pieces of meat in their store that were green. That really turned me off.

They have an Aldi's here (Atlanta area) that I shop at once in a while - great savings on nuts, chocolates, cookies, etc.

I mostly shop at Walmart because I can do all my comparison shopping there, and what I miss, their savings catcher picks up.

I enjoy grocery shopping, but I watch grocery prices like a hawk and get a kick out of saving $$. My husband chuckles at me, but I keep telling him five here, six there, two here, eight there all adds up!

Happy shopping to ya'!
Aldi's - shipwrecked

After Walmart, Aldi's is my second choice, but it isn't a place where you can do all your shopping. Their butter is nice and cheap, and I figure butter is butter, most of their produce is wrapped so nobody is pawing through it, and they usually have some interesting cheeses.
do you know about Enjoy The City books? - coupons in hand
[ In Reply To ..]
Each book has four coupons to save $5 off a $30 total at Winn Dixie, but since Publix considers WD a competitor, they accept those coupons there as well. In addition, my Publix accepts Target coupons. When I take Target store coupons on Publix BOGO items, then $5 off a $30 order, I always save more than 50%. I use a list so I can get an exact $30 order (plus a few pennies) and may have to go to more than one store in a day, but I happen to live in a triangle where there are three Publix stores, the WD and Aldi in a single loop of road within 5 miles of my home.

I follow IHeartPublix for news about the sales at Enjoy the City. Usually each book costs $20, but I can buy them a few times a year for $1.88 each. Also I use a single email address to do all my couponing, so when I sign up at manufacturer websites, they don't infiltrate my regular email account.
I don't understand the claim that Publix prices are high. sm - Feather Tuscadero

Before they all closed, the allegedly cheap grocery here was Albertson's. I never shopped there except once a year when my husband's company sent out gift cards at Xmas. I was astounded to see Albertson's prices were HIGHER than Publix! Somehow Alb's got a reputation for being a low-price store when the opposite was true!
Like others, I stack coupons on BOGOs and make out quite well at Publix, and splurge at FreshMarket. Wal-Mart just doesn't carry much of what I buy, and I have heard WAY too many anecdotes of bad meat from there, including from employees who refuse to buy it. Yikes.
If you stay in the perimeter the Publix prices are - competitive
[ In Reply To ..]
especially if quality is a priority for fresh perimeter items and whole foods.

Prepackaged, lots of frozen items (not basic vegetable items), chips are definitely not competitive unless they are BOGO. But their store brand items are excellent.

I do enjoy shopping too, but I like my buck to have more of a bang in the way of supporting the local community and good business practices, so I will cut corners in other places (most of my kitchen ware is thrift) to pay a little bit more for quality and good service, and try to stay local as much as possible. I don't look at it as wasting money but investing in the community and supporting companies that treat their employees justly.

...but that's just me...

And your hubby may chuckle, but I bet he appreciates your frugality and the time you invest in being a smart shopper. :) A penny saved!! ...sometimes my kids (now grown) will chuckle at my coin jars... someone might walk past a penny on the ground, but I pick it up and pop it in the jar... every little bit DOES help!

Same here. Customer service/ employees MUCH more friendly, helpful - and happy

[ In Reply To ..]
I rarely shop at WalMart. I leave there depressed because their employees look haggard, worn our, unhappy, and sometimes just downright rude. I might be wrong, but I interpret that as low morale by a company who doesn't know how to treat their employees.

Their fresh produce, in my store anyhow, and the last time I went there was in a sad state. This constitutes probably a third of my basket, so I do look for quality produce.

However, like you, the BOGOs are how my shopping list and food plans are devised. And going through the checkout is always a pleasure. Upbeat, conversational, and always polite and receptive. With groceries as expensive as they are, at least the friendliness takes a little sting out of the bill!

I'm lucky also to have a local market that has locally grown produce and bins and bins of all kinds of fun stuff like nuts and grains and spices, fresh baked bread and pastries from another local bakery on the other side of town, fresh fish, etc. Unfortunately the don't have BOGO, but their fresh fish and chicken prices are way low.

Costco for paper products/bulk.

It's an interesting and lucrative program, though, that Tina speaks of and happy she passed it on. Always good to get a heads up on a good deal to save some money!! :) But I just can't do Walmart.

I told my sister once that I dont shop at Wal-Mart for the produce - coupons in hand
[ In Reply To ..]
and she said the farmers don't know their produce was going to Wal-Mart so they grow the same quality as for any other store. I told her that may be true, but it seems like when the produce got to my Wal-Mart and found out where it was, it went into a state of deep depression!

Sometimes I will buy produce there if they have a special purchase of something that looks good, but I don't shop there routinely for the reasons you mentioned.
That makes sense - and happy
[ In Reply To ..]
The farmers provide the quality and Walmart cheaps out on maintaining the freshness, thereby enabling them to cut corners in other places. I guess it's all about consumers' priorities.

I am just wondering about an idea I have had and wanted some feedback to see if it a workable plan in your mind. I am thinking of starting to be a personal shopper for people for their groceries and household items.  I am thinking that I can make money this way by taking their shopping lists and buying the groceries using coupons and then they still just pay their grocery bill and I make my money by whatever coupons I can come up with toward their orders.  What do you think?  Wo ...

Does Anyone Do Their Shopping Online?Feb 17, 2013
I've been trying to find a more inexpensive way to buy groceries.  I don't do couponing much because all the coupons are usually for stuff I don't normally buy. I was looking at Amazon and it is amazing all the stuff they sell.  My question is this.  I see for instance a 12 pack of canned beans for 41.84 (pack of 12).  Does that mean 12 cans?  If so, Amazon is selling for 4 times the amount I pay for at the grocery store.  Am I reading that right?&nb ...

Shoe Shopping DilemmaFeb 05, 2012
About a month ago, I stopped at a shoe store I don't normally frequent.  I happened upon a pair of shoes that were very comfortable and stylish.  They were $100.  This was the most I ever paid for a pair of shoes, but after wearing the ones I walked out with for a week, I had no regrets.  I bought that pair and also ordered another pair in standard black (the store didn't have my size in stock).  The store said it would take about 2 weeks and they would ship di ...

Gibbs Mocks Palin, Reads Grocery List Off His HandFeb 10, 2010
In a dig at former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs took time during Tuesday's briefing to read a mock grocery list that he had written in pen on his left hand. "Eggs, milk and bread," Gibbs read from the black ink stains on his palm, claiming he was going to "make pancakes" for his son Ethan. "I crossed out bread," he added, pointing to the line that, indeed, x-ed bread off the list."I also wrote down hope and change just in case I forgot that word. ...
