NEW JOB HAS DRESS CODE

Posted: Aug 19, 2011

My new parttime job is at one of those electronic stores where everyone wears khakis and polo shirts or short sleeved cotton shirts with the store name on them.  I am a skirt and blouse kind of gal, occasional jeans, kind of "casual-dressy-girly" style I guess.   The shirts have to be tucked in and we have to wear a belt.

I'd like to get some ideas as to how to "style" this up for my comfort level without breaking the dress code rules.  I already have thought of scarfs, have different kinds of belts that will definitely bring out the "me" and also cute low-wedges and trendy chukka shoes.  Does anyone else have any suggestions?  I know some might think it's shallow or silly, but I am really stressing about this!  I have a bit of a paranoia about wearing shirts tucked in and belted slacks because of a belly pudge (hence skirts...)

Anyway, I'd appreciate anything.  (Oh, they also "suggest" that the ladies ((or gents)) with longer hair wear it back, so ponytails and buns, and I almost NEVER wear my hair up! lol!!!)  p.s.  If it matters, I'm a mid 30s woman, so nothing super young for me!

dress code - anon

Maybe some jewelry, but they may have a dress code for that too, including shoes and scarves. If it makes you feel any better (I've worked with a dress code like this in various jobs), nobody else is gonna look too exciting either, lol! :D

Hmmm. Unusual earrings, maybe an ear cuff? - (sm)

Or, a striking necklace. You can have lots of fun with ponytails, especially with long hair. Pretty, girly scrunchies, or a pretty silk scarf (like teens wore in the 50s). It still looks good today, though you rarely see it. You can also get all kinds of clip-in extensions, beads, feathers, or brightly-colored fake hair extensions.

If you don't like ponytails, you could always wear part of your hair pulled back, in one or two ponytails, with the rest hanging down behind. You can use bands, scrunchies, clips, or combs. Or, you could learn to do a French braid, and dress it up with a flower or feather accessory.

Or, you can make your eyes your trademark, with a beautiful color mix of eye shadow, (not overdone, of course), and maybe the tiniest little crystal jewel (or bindi) glued to the outside corner of one or both eyes.

Or, beautiful nail polish.

Your belt idea is great, too. No limit to what you can find there. Same with the scarf. A short, pretty scarf tied around the neck in place of a necklace looks really cute.

I once worked in an office with a girl whose "trademark" was beautiful rings and bracelets. She had a ring on every finger, and the one I remember most was a beautiful smoky topaz. She always had lots of bracelets, too.

What about heels? Some pumps or maryjanes can be really comfortable, and would dress up the boring khaki look. They also have a slimming effect.

And hmm... maybe you could talk to them about letting you wear a casual skirt of the same color as their khaki pants? You could still wear it with the polo shirt. I think that would look CUTE!

I used to know a lady whose trademark was wigs. She had perfectly good hair of her own, but she hated spending time fixing it up, and she liked variety. So she had a different color and style wig for every day of the week, and she always looked MAH-VELOUS!

PS - they also make great slimming underwear - that does a good job of minimzing pudges!

Dress Code - sounds like...... - sm

they have a pretty strict dress code. I think I would start out with a couple of simple rings, some small earrings and maybe a chain and pendent necklace. Then I would watch for a week or two and see how far astray from the dress code people stray. You certainly don't want to go in and get told on your first day or week that you need to tone down your attire. Give it a chance and see what you observe with people who have been working there for a while.

If you're buying your own khakis.... - girlie

Most places provide the shirts and the employee provides the slacks. If this is the case for you, you might want to experiment with different styles of khakis. Most ladies' stores have different fits for different body types. While the traditional higher-waisted slacks don't flatter some, the wider leg and lower waist might help you.

I'm not talking about the ones that are so low you see a thong sticking out (although some might consider that an accessory -- LOL).

I also agree with the other poster about waiting a couple of weeks to see how the other employees dress/accessorize and what you might be allowed to do. I would also caution that if you're not used to standing on your feet for extended hours, make sure your shoes are comfortable.

Lastly, the reason there are dress codes is so that everyone looks the same. This helps the customer more easily identify the sales people. I understand you want to express your individuality, but that isn't always what the employer wants.

One word - SPANX - Yep they work

Invest in a pair or two...They aren't cheap but your belly and your backside will thank you forever, and you won't hesitate a bit to tuck in that shirt, girl! Might get them a bit cheaper on Ebay than at their site, so check there first. Congrats on the job and I too get uptight about uniforms and try to personalize them while staying within the realm of acceptable, LOL!

I gotta say, I'm no prude, I don't think I'm getting THAT old...  But if anyone else had worn a dress like Rihanna did, wouldn't they be arrested for public indecency?  Where were the police for gosh sakes? I'm sure they have police at these events!  Or is this just another instance of celebrity having their way and to heck with the laws?  Weren't children or young adults present?   What's going on with celebrities and their over i ...

Can't Seem To Part With Mother's 65-year-old Wedding Dress...help...Aug 25, 2015
My sister was cleaning out her attic and found my mother's old wedding dress from 65+ years ago. She asked if I wanted it and I said I at least wanted to look at it. Well I took it, had my daughter try it on for a laugh, but now I don't know what to do with it. It is in bad shape. It's all wrinkled and the lace is crunchy, but the main fabric is a lovely heavy satin (although yellowed and stained). My mother hated it and I sent her a pic of it and she still hates it. She said she ...

Iran Photoshopped Michelle Obama's Oscar DressMar 13, 2013
Okay, I'm kinda behind the curve on this February "event," but I find it amusing and actually positive that Iran's state media wanted to show her at all. From the Sydney Morning Herald: US first lady Michelle Obama is the latest victim of Iran's photoshop craziness, with her dress altered to cover her neckline. The Fars News Agency photoshopped Mrs Obama's dress so it covered her chest and shoulders, according to media reports. Fars is linked to the Islamic republic's ...

Sorry, but they are traitors to this country. How stupid can they be? One woman asked, "What were they doing in Hawaii anyway?" referring to Pearl Harbor and WWII.  Um, I think they were protecting the islands and the USA from the Japanese?
